Birth in Brazil II: a postpartum maternal, paternal and child health research protocol
This article presents a research protocol for estimating the prevalence of postpartum mental health outcomes in mothers and fathers, abuse and satisfaction in delivery/abortion care, and the correlations between them and socioeconomic, obstetric, and child health factors. As a 2-component research, it consists of a prospective cohort study with all postpartum women interviewed in the 465 maternity hospitals included at the Birth in Brazil II baseline survey conducted from 2021 to 2023, and a cross-sectional study with the newborns' fathers/partners. Interviews will be conducted via telephone or self-completion link sent by...

Research on the trajectory and influential factors of poly-victimization: A longitudinal study of Chinese adolescents
CONCLUSION: We identified three poly-victimization trajectories, highlighting a significant heterogeneity in poly-victimization development. Understanding the characteristics of these developmental trajectories is crucial for realizing the dynamics of different poly-victimization subgroups and informing effective interventions.PMID:38696954 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106812 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Association between maternal dissatisfaction with oneself at birth and shaking and smothering toward the offspring up to 18  months old
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings highlight a robust association between mother's dissatisfaction with themselves and a higher risk of infant physical abuse. These insights call for a comprehensive review of preventive measures for childhood physical abuse.PMID:38696953 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106816 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Global trends and differences in the burden of alcohol use disorders attributable to childhood sexual abuse by sex, age, and socio-demographic index: Findings from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019
CONCLUSIONS: Substantial geographical differences were observed in the burden of AUD attributable to CSA. The level of CSA exposure was inconsistent with the related burden of AUD in different regions according to the sociodemographic index. The burden of disease increased in the elderly population and in females in high sociodemographic index regions.PMID:38696952 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106818 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Psychological maltreatment by teachers and peer victimization in Chinese youth: Depression and aggression as mediators
CONCLUSIONS: The findings supported bidirectional spillover effects between adverse teacher-student and peer interactions and demonstrated at the within-person level that such effects were transmitted indirectly via youth's depression.PMID:38696951 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106809 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

4 Things Hospitalists Can Do to Reduce Nursing Turnover
Hospitalists and hospital administrators know the greatest challenge to providing safe, high-quality healthcare day in and day out in the U.S. is adequate nurse staff. Already a problem before the pandemic, the nursing shortage continues to worsen. By 2025, less than a year from now, the U.S. will have a shortage of 200,000 to 450,000 nurses available for direct patient care, equivalent to a gap of 10% to 20%.1 There is some dispute about the existence of an overall shortage of nurses, but what is clear is that nurses are leaving direct patient care, especially medical-surgical nurses, in droves.2,3 As hospitalists, we mig...

Transdiagnostic factors in the COVID-19 pandemic: Examining the role of childhood abuse and neglect in establishing latent profiles of risk and resilience
CONCLUSIONS: Results highlight the importance of childhood abuse and neglect in differentiating between the two distinct profiles of at-risk individuals. Understanding the Relation between Short Birth Spacing and Child Maltreatment: Are Associations Due to Parental History of Childhood Abuse and Neglect?
AbstractExisting literature documents connections between short birth spacing (birth-to-conception interval of under 18  months) and the risk of child maltreatment, but explanations for this relation are understudied. We hypothesise that short birth spacing predicts child maltreatment, and it mediates the association between maternal history of childhood maltreatment and their child's risk of abuse and neglect. We use data for second and higher parity children from the Prospective Study of Infant Development (n = 335) and fit logistic regression models with relevant covariates to examine the association between mater...

A Comparison of Two Statewide Datasets to Understand Population Prevalence of Substance Use in Pregnancy: Findings and Considerations for Policy & amp; Research
AbstractMental health conditions including substance use disorder are the leading cause of pregnancy-related deaths in the U.S. Unfortunately, fears of child protective services ’ involvement interfere with maternal self-disclosure of substance use in pregnancy. Seeking to identify more mothers with substance use disorder in pregnancy or at delivery, and responsive to changes to the federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA), Connecticut requires hospital pe rsonnel to submit a deidentified notification to CPS for all newborns with prenatal substance exposure. However, it is unknown whether this approach al...

Child Sexual Abuse Victimization and Parenting
Child sexual abuse is a problem of epidemic proportions. The official number of sexual abuse victims in the United States for 2020 was 58,092 (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2023). However, this number represents only the tip of the iceberg: cases of sexual abuse reported to child protective services, investigated, and substantiated. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC; 2022) states that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 13 boys living in the United States will experience sexual abuse in their lifetime. Reoffending after convictions related to child sexual exploitation material: Data from the German Federal Central Criminal Register
CONCLUSIONS: The mere existence of a conviction for a CSEM offense is not an indication that the convicted person poses a significant risk of committing child sexual abuse. To pinpoint such a risk more accurately, the following factors should be examined: the existence of offense-specific prior records, the presence of crossover-offending in the form of concurring offenses, and the age of the offender.PMID:38688115 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106806 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)
