Validation of the PediBIRN-7 clinical prediction rule for pediatric abusive head trauma
CONCLUSION: The PediBIRN-7's overall AHT prediction performance has been validated in a novel, equivalent, patient population. Its patient-specific estimates of AHT probability can inform physicians' AHT-related diagnostic reasoning after abuse evaluation.PMID:38663048 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106799 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Very Young Children Exposed to Anesthesia May Be at Higher Risk of Childhood Bipolar Disorder
Infants and toddlers who are exposed to general anesthesia may be at increased risk for bipolar disorder later in childhood compared with infants and toddlers who are not exposed, according to areport inSchizophrenia Bulletin. The association remained after adjusting for other childhood comorbidities and parental psychiatric diagnoses.“In the context of pediatric care, it is essential to recognize the substantial perioperative trauma experienced by children, both physically and psychologically,” wrote Mingyang Sun, M.D., of the People’s Hospital of Zhenghzou University in Henan, China, and colleagues. “Emerging evi...

Adults' interpretation of invitations using the word ‘time’
This study tested whether adults perceive the ambiguity in these invitations and whether they understand the source of children's pseudotemp oral errors. We examined 401 adult participants' perceptions of invitations using the word ‘time’, varying the phrasing of the invitation (about the time vs.what happened) and whether the participant had exposure to a child's pseudotemporal response. Adults largely interpreted the invitations as requests for what happened during an event, not requests for when an event occurred. They rated the invitations as clear, not difficult and appropriate for elementary-aged children. Howeve...

Pediatric and Young Adult Trauma Recidivism
CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric/young adult trauma recidivism is associated with specific characteristics including male, African American race, penetrating trauma, and uninsured status. Recidivists are primarily presenting from a zip code with low socioeconomic status. It is critical to develop targeted interventions to help this population in trauma prevention.PMID:38653577 | DOI:10.1177/00031348241248698 (Source: The American Surgeon)

Is trauma research neglecting neurodiverse populations? A systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence ACEs in adults with autistic traits
Elanor Webb, Benedetta Lupattelli Gencarelli, Grace Keaveney, Deborah Morris Advances in Autism, Vol. ahead-of-print, No. ahead-of-print, pp.- The prevalence of exposure to adversity is elevated in autistic populations, compared to neurotypical peers. Despite this, the frequency and nature of early adverse experiences are not well understood in autistic adults, with several underlying methodological limitations in the available literature. The purpose of this study is to systematically synthesise and analyse the prevalence of childhood adversity in this marginalised population, in accordance with the adverse childhood exp...

Organized sexualized and ritual violence: Results from two representative German samples
CONCLUSION: Although ORA is discussed thoroughly, frequencies in the German population are low. This may be due to inconsistent terminology and operationalization of definitions with lack of precision. However, an intersection of conspiracy beliefs and the topic of ritual violence sheds another light on this issue that should receive more attention.PMID:38643644 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2024.106792 (Source: Child Abuse and Neglect)

Experiences of physical and emotional intimate partner violence during the COVID-19 pandemic: a comparison of prepandemic and pandemic data in a longitudinal study of Australian mothers
Conclusions Findings suggest that the spike in IPV-related crime statistics following the onset of the pandemic (typically incidents of physical violence) is the tip of the iceberg for women’s IPV experiences. There is a need to increase the capacity of health practitioners to recognise emotional as well as physical IPV, and IPV ought to be considered where women present with mental health problems.
