Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1611: An Overview of the Spices Used for the Prevention and Potential Treatment of Gastric Cancer
We present the potential molecular mechanisms responsible for the effectivity of a given seasoning substance and their impact on GC cells. We discuss their potential effects on proliferation, apoptosis, and migration. For most of the spices discussed, we also outline the unavailability and side effects of their use. (Source: Cancers)

Pearl millet flour and green gram milk based probiotic beverage
Int J Food Microbiol. 2024 Apr 10;417:110696. doi: 10.1016/j.ijfoodmicro.2024.110696. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe probiotic beverage was developed using germinated and ungerminated pearl millet flour and green gram milk. The germinated and ungerminated pearl millet flour was added to green gram milk at different concentrations (0.5-2.5 %) along with sugar and cardamom. The mixtures were then inoculated with probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus incubated at 37 °C for 6 h. Characterization of probiotic beverages was carried out during storage at (4 ± 1)°C for 21 days. The germinated flour beverage had high a...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 7826: Extraction of Active Compounds from Mixtures of Hemp (Cannabis sativa) with Plants of the Zingiberaceae Family
In this study, hemp (Cannabis sativa) and three members of the Zingiberaceae family, ginger (Zingiber officinale), turmeric (Curcuma longa), and cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), were extracted simultaneously, and their bioactive component values were investigated. Two extraction methods were used, namely ultrasound-assisted extraction with ethanol and supercritical fluid extraction with carbon dioxide. First, extracts were obtained from separate plant materials. Then, hemp was extracted in combination with ginger, turmeric, and cardamom in a 1:1 ratio. The extracts obtained were evaluated for their antioxidant activity and...

Black cardamom (Amomum subulatum) extract improves growth potential, antioxidant status, immune parameters and response to crowding stress in Catla catla
In conclusion, the use of BCE in feed can enhance the growth performance, antioxidant status, haemat ology, and serum biochemistry ofC. catla and improve the resistance against crowding stress. The optimum levels of BCE forC. catla were estimated based on weight gain % (1.78  g/kg;R2 = 0.97), feed conversion ratio (1.65 g/kg;R2 = 0.98), MDA content (1.66 mg/kg;R2 = 0.93) and serum lysozyme activity (1.72 mg/kg;R2 = 1) using broken-line regression analysis. Complete genome sequence of a divergent strain of cardamom mosaic virus
AbstractCardamom mosaic virus (CdMV; genusMacluravirus), which causes mosaic (katte) disease in cardamom, is a highly variable member of the familyPotyviridae. So far, the complete genome sequence of one isolate from Karnataka (KS) has been reported. In the present study, we determined the complete genome sequence of a CdMV isolate from Kerala (KI) and the complete CP gene sequences of nine isolates of CdMV from Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, India. The complete genome of CdMV (KI) consists of 8255 nucleotides (nt) with two open reading frames (ORFs). The large ORF, potentially coding for a polyprotein of 2638 amino ac...

Non-cytotoxic, highly functionalized cellulose nanocrystals with high crystallinity and thermal stability derived from a novel agromass of Elettaria cardamomum, using a soft and benign mild oxalic acid hydrolysis
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Aug 28:126571. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126571. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNon-cytotoxic, highly crystalline, and functionalized, thermally stable cellulose nanocrystals are extracted from the stems of Elettaria cardamom, a novel underutilised agromass, by employing a neat green, mild oxalic acid hydrolysis. The protocol involves a chemo-mechanical strategy of coupling hydrolysis with steam explosion and homogenization. The obtained CNC showed a crystallinity index of 81.51 %, an aspect ratio of 17.80 ± 1.03 and a high degradation temperature of about 339.07 °C. The extraction procedure i...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 4024: Antioxidant Activity in Extracts from Zingiberaceae Family: Cardamom, Turmeric, and Ginger
Zafrilla An increase in life expectancy leads to a greater impact of chronic non-communicable diseases. This is even more remarkable in elder populations, to whom these become main determinants of health status, affecting mental and physical health, quality of life, and autonomy. Disease appearance is closely related to the levels of cellular oxidation, pointing out the importance of including foods in one’s diet that can prevent oxidative stress. Previous studies and clinical data suggest that some plant-based products can slow and reduce the cellular degradation associated with aging and age-related dis...
