Pilchard Curry
When Mrs Sciencebase was a student, she used to make an inexpensive curry: tin of pilchards, tin of tomatoes, chopped onion, crushed clove of garlic, teaspoon each of cumin, coriander, and turmeric powder, salt & pepper, and a half a teaspoon of chili powder. Served on a bed of whole-grain boiled rice. It sounded a bit grim, but wasn’t too bad. (Brown-bread icecream for pudding or Granny Grape Pudding). It was all certainly a whole lot more adventurous than the boiled noodles and soy sauce I once cooked her because I had nothing else in the cupboard. Don’t know if it compares well with a camping meal we onc...

21 spices for healthy holiday foods
The holiday season is one of the hardest times of the year to resist salty, fatty, sugary foods. Who doesn’t want to enjoy the special dishes and treats that evoke memories and meaning — especially during the pandemic? Physical distancing and canceled gatherings may make you feel that indulging is a way to pull some joy out of the season. But stay strong. While it’s okay to have an occasional bite or two of marbled roast beef, buttery mashed potatoes, or chocolate pie, gorging on them frequently can lead to weight gain, and increased blood pressure, blood sugar, and “bad” LDL cholesterol. Instead, skip the butter...

Can Opening to Your Own Creative Gifts Make You a Happier Human Being?
“You cannot use up creativity. The more you use it, the more you have.” – Maya Angelou Are you an Imaginista? A Creativa? An Inspirista? A Wild Enthusiast? If you had your way, would life be lived out loud, in Technicolor, vibrantly glowing, tap dancing to a rhythm that you alone can hear? And then, would you invite people to dance, sing and play along with you? Sadly, many were encouraged to lip synch, color inside the lines, stay inside the box, play it safe, and keep their light under wraps lest they shine too brightly and intimidate others. These types of messages likely came from adults who feared their own ...

More on cardamonin and myeloma
After months of being too busy with other stuff, such as…life!, to do much research, I have been going through PubMed again, yaaaay, and this is one of the studies, published in 2015, that really caught my attention: goo.gl/YgMY8O You can actually read the full study online for free, at this link: goo.gl/muftiW As my blog title suggests, it’s about cardamonin, about which I actually wrote a brief post in February of 2011 (see http://margaret.healthblogs.org/other-alternative-treatments/cardamonin/). That post was based on a 2010 study, showing, and I quote, that “Cardamonin affects both the STAT3 and NF...

7 Ways to Keep Fear from Stopping Creativity
The process of creating something from nothing can be terrifying, especially when thinking you have to do it all by yourself. Knowing how to be open and permeated by the world you are living in helps, because then everything around you becomes material for your creation. The world around starts to look like a friendly collaborator — with the design to inspire and inform you. All of a sudden the woman talking too loudly in the coffee shop is dropping lines that work their way into the character you are writing about, the jerk who stepped in front of you in the elevator has a saying on his t-shirt that becomes the titl...

"At @oatmealsny, which opened in Greenwich Village in 2012, oats are, finally, properly adored. Not as a conveyor of health benefits, but as an indulgence. The cafe serves 30-odd variations of oatmeal inspired by Asian cuisines, candy and Elvis. Here, @andrewscrivani photographed @oatmealsny's Indian-spiced oatmeal, which combines the flavors of chai, cardamom and crystallized ginger, and is mixed with almonds, raisins and a splash of coconut milk. Foods that Nourish, Replenish and Repair
The food we eat serves many purposes.  It satisfies a primal need to fuel our bodies and quell hunger. It connects us to family and friends in lovely ways, during the holidays, in social situations and at the nightly dinner table.  It encourages us to be creative, to try new things, explore different cultures, and savor interesting tastes. And it comforts us, at least temporarily, when we are lonely, sad, anxious or otherwise spent. Food has another very important purpose: it cleanses, repairs, replenishes our body at the most basic cellular level.  In fact, the latest research from the field of  nutrigenomics[1], reve...

Study on Potential Toxicity of E-Cigarette Flavorings Produces Unwarranted Scare
A study published in the journal Tobacco Control this past April has produced an unwarranted scare about the potential toxicity of the flavorings in electronic cigarettes.(See: Tierney PA, et al. Flavour chemicals in electronic cigarette fluids. Tobacco Control. Published online ahead of print on April 15, 2015. DOI: 0.1136/tobaccocontrol-2014-052175.)The study used gas chromatography/mass spectrometry to analyze the chemical constituents in e-liquids of various flavors. It appears that 30 different e-liquid flavors were tested. Multiple flavors of two brands of disposable e-cigarettes (Blu and NJOY) were tested along with...

Flavorful Ways to Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right — Any Time of Day!
We’re still celebrating National Nutrition Month and I’ve had a great time spreading the word that we can all “enjoy the taste of eating right.”  You know, to “enjoy the taste of eating right” we want to focus on FLAVOR. Wheat-free eating enters the gourmet world
While in Toronto as part of my Experience Wheatlessness tour, chef David Chrystian of the Victor restaurant in the Le Germain Hotel prepared a meal specifically crafted to fit the Wheat Belly lifestyle. In particular, the chef focused on the elegant preparation of organ meats. Chef Chrystian was a Top Chef Canada contestant on Food Network in 2012. Many people’s notions of organ meats end at liver and onions, or unappetizing presentations of other offal. Chef David Chrystian’s elegant and wonderfully presented dishes were therefore a true delight to see and to eat. Here are two of his dishes (among the six he p...
