Advancements in medical treatment for pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors: A beacon of hope
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Mar 28;30(12):1670-1675. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i12.1670.ABSTRACTThis editorial highlights the remarkable advancements in medical treatment strategies for pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (pan-NETs), emphasizing tailored approaches for specific subtypes. Cytoreductive surgery and somatostatin analogs (SSAs) play pivotal roles in managing tumors, while palliative options such as molecular targeted therapy, peptide receptor radionuclide therapy, and chemotherapy are reserved for SSA-refractory patients. Gastrinomas, insulinomas, glucagonomas, carcinoid tumors and VIPomas necessitate distinct thera-p...

Surgical outcomes for non ‐small cell lung cancer in younger adults: A population‐based study
ConclusionsOverall, younger patients with NSCLC treated surgically exhibit superior OS and LCSS compared to their older counterparts, although no statistically significant difference in LCSS for stages III –IV was observed between the two age groups. (Source: Thoracic Cancer)

ETV6-NTRK2 Fusion in a Patient With Metastatic Pulmonary Atypical Carcinoid Successfully Treated With Entrectinib: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
We present a female patient with metastatic AC after complete resection. Due to low expression of somatostatin receptor in this case, somatostatin analogs and peptide receptor radionuclide therapy were not available. After pursuing other alternative treatments, including chemotherapy (ie, carboplatin, etoposide, capecitabine, temozolomide, and paclitaxel), everolimus, and atezolizumab, she returned with significant progression, including innumerable subcutaneous nodules, left pleura metastasis, multiple bone metastases, and brain metastases. New biopsy analysis revealed an ETV6-NTRK2 fusion. She was immediately administere...

Imaging in Lung Cancer Staging
Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, as well as in the United States. Clinical staging, primarily with imaging, is integral to stratify patients into groups that determine treatment options and predict survival. The eighth edition of the tumor, node, metastasis (TNM-8) staging system proposed in 2016 by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer remains the current standard for lung cancer staging. The system is used for all subtypes of lung cancer, including non-small cell lung cancer, small cell lung cancer, and bronchopulmonary carcinoid tumors. (Source: Clinics in Chest Medicine)

The skin as a window to the gut: A case of carcinoid syndrome
We report the case of a 66-year-old woman presenting with chronic diarrhea, facial venous telangiectasia and elevated urinary 5-hydrocyindoleacetic acid levels. A 68-Ga DOTATOC PET/CT scan revealed an ileal mass and lesions consistent with liver, ovary and bone metastasis. A liver biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of well-differentiated NET G1. Therapy with somatostatin analogs achieved symptom control, but the liver disease progressed and the patient passed away after 2  years of follow-up. The challenge of diagnosing CS resides in its heterogeneous manifestations, which may range from mild to life-threatening conditions. ...

Gallbladder carcinoid in a cat
Can Vet J. 2024 Mar;65(3):241-244.ABSTRACTCarcinoids are rare tumors that originate from neuroendocrine system cells. There has apparently only been 1 report in the veterinary medical literature of a cat with a gallbladder carcinoid, with no long-term follow-up information available from that case. Furthermore, apparently only 9 dogs with gallbladder carcinoids have been reported, again with no long-term follow-up. This case report describes the clinical presentation, surgical appearance, histopathologic and immunohistochemical findings, postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy treatment, and long-term outcome of a domestic lon...
