Gallbladder carcinoid in a cat
Can Vet J. 2024 Mar;65(3):241-244.ABSTRACTCarcinoids are rare tumors that originate from neuroendocrine system cells. There has apparently only been 1 report in the veterinary medical literature of a cat with a gallbladder carcinoid, with no long-term follow-up information available from that case. Furthermore, apparently only 9 dogs with gallbladder carcinoids have been reported, again with no long-term follow-up. This case report describes the clinical presentation, surgical appearance, histopathologic and immunohistochemical findings, postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy treatment, and long-term outcome of a domestic lon...

Factors Associated With Long-term survival in Children With bronchial and Lung Carcinoid Tumors
Bronchial carcinoids are rare in children and the treatment is based on tumor behavior in adults. The purpose of this study was to determine factors and management strategies associated with long-term survival in the pediatric population using a national cohort. Primary neuroendocrine tumors of ovary: A clinicopathological spectrum in a tertiary care hospital with review of literature
CONCLUSIONS: Primary neuroendocrine tumors in the ovary are rare and consist of a group of heterogeneous tumors that express similar immunohistochemical markers.PMID:38384029 | DOI:10.4103/jcrt.jcrt_28_22 (Source: Cell Research)

Multiple bronchial carcinoids associated with Cowden syndrome
We present a case of a 46-year-old male patient diagnosed with testicular seminoma and follicular thyroid cancer in his medical history. Our patient met the clinical diagnostic criteria of Cowden syndrome. Genetic analysis established the clinical diagnosis; a known heterozygousPTEN mutation was detected [PTEN (LRG_311t1)c.388  C >  T (p.Arg130Ter)]. Incidentally, he was also seen with multiple pulmonary lesions during his oncological follow-up. A video-assisted thoracoscopic left lingula wedge resection and later resections from the right lung were performed. Histological findings revealed typical pulmonary carci...

Clinicopathologic and Molecular Characteristics of Resected Thoracic Mass Lesions in the Pediatric Population: A 25-Year Institutional Experience From a Tertiary Care Center
CONCLUSIONS.—: Resected pediatric thoracic mass lesions are more likely to be metastatic lesions, congenital cysts or malformations, or nonneoplastic lesions compared to primary thoracic neoplasms, which are encountered at a low frequency and tend to have relatively simple genetic profiles.PMID:38347727 | DOI:10.5858/arpa.2023-0251-OA (Source: Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine)

Hydrophilic molecularly imprinted resin-hexagonal boron nitride composite as a new adsorbent for selective extraction and determination of a carcinoid tumor biomarker in urine
Anal Chim Acta. 2024 Mar 15;1294:342289. doi: 10.1016/j.aca.2024.342289. Epub 2024 Jan 25.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: The detection of disease biomarkers in biological samples plays an important role in early diagnosis and treatment of carcinoid tumor. However, due to the complexity of biological samples and the extremely low concentration of disease biomarkers, sample pretreatment is still the bottleneck of achieving accurate quantitative determination. In this work, new hydrophilic molecularly imprinted resin-hexagonal boron nitride (HMIR-h-BN) composites were developed and used as a new solid phase extraction (SPE) adsorbent fo...

Bronchial carcinoid: a neuroendocrine manifestation —presented as bronchospasm and hypertension during resection
AbstractBronchopulmonary carcinoid tumors are rare, slow-growing malignant neuroendocrine tumors. Early diagnosis is pivotal as surgical resection is the main stay of treatment. A 40-year-old female with typical bronchial carcinoid presented with complaints of breathlessness on mild to moderate exertion, intermittent productive cough, low-grade fever, and loss of appetite since 1  year. Right lobectomy was performed with regional lymph node resection; during resection of the tumor, manipulation led to a massive surge and fluctuations in blood pressure which were managed with deepening of the plane of anesthesia and admini...

Touching with your eyes: Fluorescent intraoperative imaging in the management of Small Bowel Neuroendocrine Tumors
Small bowel neuroendocrine tumors (SB-NETs) are the most common small-bowel malignancy; up to 19  % can secrete bioactive substances and they account for 90 % of carcinoid syndrome cases clinically.1,2 Interestingly, 40–55 % of patients will have multifocal primaries at the time of diagnosis.3 These tumors present an interesting clinical challenge in that current preoperative imaging mo dalities cannot reliably identify tumor burden. Given the high likelihood of multifocality, current guidelines recommend manual palpation at the time of resection. (Source: American Journal of Surgery)

Resistant gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors: a definition and guideline to medical and surgical management
Proc (Bayl Univ Med Cent). 2023 Dec 20;37(1):104-110. doi: 10.1080/08998280.2023.2284039. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTGastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), also historically known as carcinoids, are tumors derived of hormone-secreting enteroendocrine cells. Carcinoids may be found in the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, appendix, colon, rectum, or pancreas. The biologic behavior of carcinoids differs based on their location, with gastric and appendiceal NETs among the least aggressive and small intestinal and pancreatic NETs among the most aggressive. Ultimately, however, biologic behavior is most heavily i...
