Resistant gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors: a definition and guideline to medical and surgical management
Proc (Bayl Univ Med Cent). 2023 Dec 20;37(1):104-110. doi: 10.1080/08998280.2023.2284039. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTGastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), also historically known as carcinoids, are tumors derived of hormone-secreting enteroendocrine cells. Carcinoids may be found in the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, appendix, colon, rectum, or pancreas. The biologic behavior of carcinoids differs based on their location, with gastric and appendiceal NETs among the least aggressive and small intestinal and pancreatic NETs among the most aggressive. Ultimately, however, biologic behavior is most heavily i...

Carcinoid Heart Disease- A Presentation Of The Recurrent Metastatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Of Small Intestine
Carcinoid heart disease is an infrequent presentation of carcinoid syndrome caused by excessive secretion of vasoactive substances, which usually involves the right-sided valves in metastatic disease. (Source: Journal of Cardiac Failure)

The cause-and-effect relationship between gut microbiota abundance and carcinoid syndrome: a bidirectional Mendelian randomization study
ConclusionSix microbiota taxa were found to have a causal relationship with CS, and further randomized controlled trials are needed for verification. (Source: Frontiers in Microbiology)

Carcinoid heart disease: another step into the knowledge of a rare disease
With an incidence of 1/100 000 in the general population, carcinoid tumours are rare neuroendocrine malignancies (NETs). Mostly originating from the enterochromaffin cells of the gastrointestinal tract, they usually grow slowly over the years, secreting large amounts of vasoactive substances (ie, serotonins such as 5-hydroxytryptamine, tachykinins and prostaglandins). Carcinoid syndromes (CS) occur in 20–30% of patients and are associated with the presence of liver metastases with the consequent release of vasoactive amines into the systemic circulation. At this stage, patients may become symptomatic with cutaneous f...

Management and outcomes of carcinoid heart disease with liver metastases of midgut neuroendocrine tumours
Conclusions We observed a high postoperative mortality rate and baseline right-sided heart failure was associated with worse outcome. In surviving patients, a positive right ventricular remodelling was observed. Prospective, multicentre studies are warranted to better define the management strategy and to identify biomarkers associated with outcome in CHD. (Source: Heart)

ETV6::NTRK3 gene fusion in a patient with metastatic lung atypical carcinoid successfully treated with repotrectinib: A case report
The tropomyosin receptor kinase (TRK) protein family (TRKA, TRKB, and TRKC receptors) is encoded by NTRK genes involving NTRK1, NTRK2 and NTRK3 [1]. TRKs are activated via NTRK fusions, mutations and overexpression, regulating cell proliferation, differentiation, survival and apoptosis. NTRK gene fusion has been identified as oncogenic drivers in various tumors, including non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). It is present at low frequencies in NSCLC, approximately 0.2  %-3.3 % [2]. The fusion of NTRK3 and translocation-Ets-leukemia-virus (ETV6) genes was reported both in an increasing number infantile and malignant tumo...

Neuroendocrine carcinoma of ovary: Hitherto rare entity in primary ovarian tumors
Indian J Pathol Microbiol. 2023 Oct-Dec;66(4):855-858. doi: 10.4103/ijpm.ijpm_954_21.ABSTRACTNeuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN) of the female genital tract are extremely uncommon. These tumors can be broadly divided into well differentiated (carcinoid) and poorly differentiated NEN (small cell and large cell carcinomas). Occurrence of neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) in ovary has rarely been reported. These high-grade malignant tumors have a fulminant clinical course with a short period of survival, even when diagnosed at an early stage. We hereby report two cases of primary neuroendocrine carcinoma of the ovary.PMID:38084548 ...
