Development of Burkholderia Cepacia Complex Targeted Clinical Registry and Phage Library
Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) are uncommon pathogens but associated with high morbidity/ mortality. Antibiotics are limited and phage therapy is being explored as a potential alternative. Our goal was to develop a phage library to target clinical BCC isolates for use in compassionate use protocols and clinical trials. (Source: The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation)

Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBurkholderia, a multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, is an uncommon cause of infection mostly in immunocompromised patients with a clinical profile very similar to tuberculosis. The most common conditions associated with this organism are cystic fibrosis and chronic granulomatous diseases. Bacteremia with it occurs in patients who are chronically ill and associated with significant morbidity and mortality. We are reporting here a case of perisplenic intra-abdominal abscess caused by Burkholderia cepacia in a patient...

A study on the occurrence of Burkholderia cepacia complex in ultrasound gels used in different veterinary clinical settings in India
AbstractBurkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) organisms are emerging multidrug-resistant pathogens. They are opportunistic and cause severe diseases in humans that may result in fatal outcomes. They are mainly reported as nosocomial pathogens, and transmission often occurs through contaminated pharmaceutical products. From 1993 to 2019, 14 Bcc outbreaks caused by contaminated ultrasound gels (USGs) have been reported in several countries, including India. We screened a total of 63 samples of USGs from various veterinary and human clinical care centers across 17 states of India and isolated 32 Bcc strains ofBurkholderia cenoce...

Post-transplant outcomes among cystic fibrosis patients undergoing lung transplantation colonized by Burkholderia: a single center cohort study
Prior infection with Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) has been associated with poorer outcomes after lung transplantation, posing an important dilemma for cystic fibrosis (CF). Although current guidelines consider BCC infection to be a relative contraindication, some centers continue to offer lung transplantation to BCC-infected CF patients. Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 1646: Compilation of the Antimicrobial Compounds Produced by Burkholderia Sensu Stricto
Santos Due to the increase in multidrug-resistant microorganisms, the investigation of novel or more efficient antimicrobial compounds is essential. The World Health Organization issued a list of priority multidrug-resistant bacteria whose eradication will require new antibiotics. Among them, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacteriaceae are in the “critical” (most urgent) category. As a result, major investigations are ongoing worldwide to discover new antimicrobial compounds. Burkholderia, specifically Burkholderia sensu stricto, is recognized as an antimicrobial-...

Endometrial microbiota in women with and without adenomyosis: A pilot study
DiscussionThe endometrial microbiota of adenomyosis exhibits a unique structure and Citrobacter freundii, Prevotella copri, and Burkholderia cepacia were identified as potential pathogenic microorganisms associated with adenomyosis. Our findings suggest that changes in the endometrial microbiota of patients with adenomyosis are of potential value for determining the occurrence, progression, early of diagnosis, and treatment oadenomyosis. Burkholderia cepacia causing liver and splenic abscess: Two case reports
Indian J Pathol Microbiol. 2023 Jan-Mar;66(1):171-173. doi: 10.4103/ijpm.ijpm_702_21.ABSTRACTBurkholderia cepacia infections are common among immunocompromised patients but multiple reports have shown that it can affect immunocompetent patients also. We are reporting two patients with multiple liver and splenic abscesses caused by Burkholderia cepacia. First case is a 54-year-old diabetic male presenting with fever, abdominal pain, bilateral lower limb weakness, and incontinence of urine. Second case is a 41-year-old male presenting with fever and confusion. Both had liver and splenic abscesses. Pus aspirated from the absc...
