Interactive multidisciplinary pilot workshop to improve medical student perception of and interest in breast surgical oncology
CONCLUSION: An interactive, anatomically based exposure to multidisciplinary breast cancer surgery improves medical student perception and interest in BSO. Medical schools should consider incorporating similar events to foster interest in BSO and other surgical subspecialties.PMID:38368764 | DOI:10.1016/j.breast.2024.103690 (Source: Breast)

Are We Missing Acute Toxicities Associated with Hypofractionated Breast Irradiation? A Report from a Large Multi-Center Cohort Study
CONCLUSION: An earlier post-treatment follow-up for HF-WBI patients did not reveal a significant increased incidence of acute toxicities at 2 weeks compared to 4 weeks. This study provides physicians and patients with additional data on the safety and tolerability of HF-WBI for early stage breast cancer.PMID:38364950 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijrobp.2024.01.225 (Source: Health Physics)

Exploration of tumor size measurement methods in preoperative breast cancer assessment using whole-body silicon photomultiplier PET: feasibility and first results
ConclusionsThe study demonstrated that among various PET thresholds, the '1.5 SUVmean  + 2 SD' threshold exhibited the best performance. However, even with this threshold, the concordance rate was limited to only 63%. (Source: Japanese Journal of Radiology)

Comparison of long-term oncological outcomes after central lumpectomy versus nipple-sparing breast-conserving surgery for centrally located breast cancer: a propensity score-matched study
ConclusionNS-BCS showed more local recurrence than central lumpectomy. When deciding whether to spare the nipple during BCS in CLBC, patients should be sufficiently informed about the risk of IBTR. (Source: Breast Cancer Research and Treatment)

Understanding Treatment Decision-Making in Older Women With Breast Cancer: A  Survey-Based Study
For women ≥70 y old with early-stage hormone receptor–positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2–negative breast cancer, the national guidelines recommend the omission of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) and post-lumpectomy radiotherapy. However, national-level data suggest these treatments re main common. We utilized a survey-based approach to explore patient-level factors driving overutilization. Adipose perforator flaps without skin donor site: “in between” single scar approach for reconstruction of small peripheral breast defects after lumpectomy.
In breast conserving surgery, the reconstruction of defects in small breasts where volume displacement techniques are not feasible can be challenging. On the other hand, patients with bigger breasts may not wish to undergo major breast remodeling surgery or breast symmetrization procedure. In such cases, volume replacement techniques can be beneficial, but these leave additional scars and are time consuming. The authors propose an “in between” single scar approach to perform both lumpectomy and reconstruction of small peripheral breast tumors. Reversed polarity high-cell carcinoma of the breast: A case report
We report a case of high-cell, inverted-polarity carcinoma of the breast in a 43-year-old female patient with no history of breast neoplasia and no palpable mass on clinical examination. The tumour was discovered following a screening echomammogram, which revealed a lesion classified ACR 4b. A microbiopsy of this lesion concluded that it was a papillary proliferation that should be removed. A lumpectomy was performed. Histopathological and immunohistochemical studies of the surgical specimen confirmed the diagnosis of high-cell, reverse-polarity carcinoma expressing calretinin and IDH1. Given the rarity of this entity, the...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 497: Breast Cancer in the Tissue of the Contralateral Breast Reduction
Shan Qiu Breast cancer is the most prevalent malignancy among women worldwide, and the increasing number of survivors is due to advances in early diagnosis and treatment efficacy. Consequently, the risk of developing contralateral breast cancer (CBC) among these survivors has become a concern. While surgical intervention with lumpectomy is a widely used primary approach for breast cancer, post-operative breast asymmetry is a potential concern. Many women opt for symmetrizing reduction procedures to improve aesthetic outcomes and quality of life. However, despite careful radiological screening, there is a chance of acci...

Conclusions: Cavity shaving after lumpectomy reduced the rate of positive margins and it was associated with a significant reduction in surgical time compared to intraoperative evaluation of resection margins.PMID:38248120 | PMC:PMC10814307 | DOI:10.3390/curroncol31010035 (Source: Current Oncology)

Target volumes comparison between postoperative simulation magnetic resonance imaging and preoperative diagnostic magnetic resonance imaging for prone breast radiotherapy after breast ‐conserving surgery
ConclusionsDespite using DIR technology, the spatial correspondence of target volumes between MRIpre and MRIpost was suboptimal. Therefore, relying solely on preoperative diagnostic MRI with DIR for postoperative LC delineation is not recommended. (Source: Cancer Medicine)
