Dietary fat intake and risk of epithelial ovarian cancer in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition
This study does not support an etiological role for total fat intake in relation to EOC risk; however, based on observations of a positive association between intake of polyunsaturated fat and invasive EOC risk in the current and previous studies, this fat subtype warrants further investigation to determine its potential role in EOC development. Tubal ligation and salpingectomy and the risk of epithelial ovarian cancer and borderline ovarian tumors: a nationwide case–control study
ConclusionsWe confirmed that tubal ligation reduces the risk of epithelial ovarian cancer and particularly endometrioid cancer. To our knowledge, this is the first observational publication to report on salpingectomy and ovarian cancer risk and our promising findings warrant further investigation. Abstract 4124: Ovarian cancer survival by tumor subtype
Conclusion: Regardless of how subtype was defined, high grade, invasive serous tumors had worse survival compared to other tumor subtypes. This underscores the need for prevention and treatment targeted at these aggressive tumors. canres;74/19_Supplement/4124/table1T1 Table. Early pregnancy sex steroids and maternal risk of epithelial ovarian cancer
Well-established associations between reproductive characteristics and epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) support an involvement of sex steroid hormones in the etiology of EOC. Limited previous studies have evaluated circulating androgens and the risk of EOC, and estrogens and progesterone have been investigated in only one of the previous studies. Furthermore, there is little data on potential heterogeneity in the association between circulating hormones and EOC by histological subgroup. Therefore, we conducted a nested case–control study within the Finnish Maternity Cohort and the Northern Sweden Maternity Cohort to i...

Endometrioid Adenocarcinoma of the Ovary Mimicking Serous Borderline Tumor: Report of a Series of Cases
We report the clinicopathologic features of a small series of ovarian endometrioid adenocarcinomas (n=5), 4 of which were received in consultation, which were originally diagnosed as or were suspected to represent serous borderline tumor, with or without a component of low-grade serous adenocarcinoma. The patients were aged between 47 and 74 yr (mean, 60 yr), and all tumors were unilateral and Stage 1C. Serous borderline tumor was suspected on the basis of the predominant architectural pattern with prominent papillary formations consisting of rather bland epithelial cells covering stromal cores which projected into cystic ...

Endometriosis-related ovarian neoplasms: pathogenesis and histopathologic features
A variety of neoplasms have been described to arise in association with ovarian endometriosis, characterized by younger age, earlier detection at lower stages, and better survival. The molecular pathogenesis of these tumours has become a focus of recent studies. Representative endometriosis-associated neoplasms include endometrioid carcinoma, clear cell carcinoma, seromucinous borderline tumour (endocervical-like mucinous borderline tumour; Müllerian mucinous borderline tumour), squamous cell carcinoma, Müllerian adenosarcoma, and endometrioid stromal sarcoma. Unexpected ovarian malignancy following laparoscopic excision of adnexal masses
STUDY QUESTION What are the frequency of, and the prognosis for, ovarian malignancies among patients who have undergone laparoscopic surgery for an adnexal mass? SUMMARY ANSWER The rate of unexpected ovarian malignancy resected by laparoscopy was 1.5%, and the presence of an early-stage unexpected ovarian malignancy did not alter patient prognosis. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Even when laparoscopic surgery is used for the resection of an adnexal mass that is most likely benign, some patients are found to have malignant tumors post-operatively. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION The pathologic reports of 884 women who underwent lapa...

The non-canonical Wnt ligand, Wnt5a, is upregulated and associated with epithelial to mesenchymal transition in epithelial ovarian cancer.
CONCLUSION: This study adds to the increasing evidence that Wnt signalling may play an important role in ovarian cancer development. Utilising an unparalleled large cohort of 623 patients, Wnt5a protein expression was shown to be significantly higher in ovarian cancer patients when compared to benign and borderline ovarian tumours and healthy control patients. In addition, we have utilised in vitro models to show for the first time in ovarian cancer that Wnt5a driven non-canonical pathways can alter epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT). NF-{kappa}B SNPs and Ovarian Cancer Risk
A missense single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the immune modulatory gene IL1A has been associated with ovarian cancer risk (rs17561). Although the exact mechanism through which this SNP alters risk of ovarian cancer is not clearly understood, rs17561 has also been associated with risk of endometriosis, an epidemiologic risk factor for ovarian cancer. Interleukin-1α (IL1A) is both regulated by and able to activate NF-κB, a transcription factor family that induces transcription of many proinflammatory genes and may be an important mediator in carcinogenesis. We therefore tagged SNPs in more than 200 genes in the NF-κ...

Is it possible to diagnose malignancy from fluid in cystic ovarian tumors?
Conclusion: In cystic ovarian tumors, cystic fluid may provide informative material for molecular studies since it reflects the p53 status of tumor tissue in the cyst wall. This system might help to identify ovarian malignancy without resection of the tumor tissues. (Source: European Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology)

Prognostic value of tissue protein expression levels of MIB‐1 (Ki‐67) in Danish ovarian cancer patients. From the ‘MALOVA’ ovarian cancer study
In conclusion, our results predict that an increased level of MIB‐1 (Ki‐67) expression in tumour tissue, points to a less favourable outcome for OC patients. (Source: APMIS)

Tubal ligation and risk of ovarian cancer subtypes: a pooled analysis of case-control studies
Conclusions We found that the protective effects of tubal ligation on ovarian cancer risk were subtype-specific. These findings provide insights into distinct aetiologies of ovarian cancer subtypes and mechanisms underlying the protective effects of tubal ligation. [Endometriosis as a risk factor for ovarian cancer].
Abstract A history of endometriosis is a risk factor for some subtypes of epithelial ovarian cancer. Endometriosis is associated with increased risk of ovarian clear cell, serous low-grade endometrioid cancer, but it is unclear what the role of endometriosis is in the development of other histopathological subtypes of ovarian cancer, such as high-grade serous borderline tumors subtypes or borderline serous and mucinous cancers. An understanding of the mechanisms leading to malignant transformation of endometriosis will be needed to identify subgroups of women at increased risk of ovarian cancer. This is im...

Fertility and borderline ovarian tumor: a systematic review of conservative management, risk of recurrence and alternative options
CONCLUSIONS This systematic review underlines that fertility subsequent to treatment of BOT depends mainly on histology and initial staging to distinguish early from advanced stages. In patients with advanced stage BOT, several alternative options to conservative management are available to allow patients to conceive without compromising their prognosis.
