Seromucinous borderline tumor of the testis —a case report
Tumors of ovarian epithelial type of testis are rare entities. After ruling out metastasis, especially from gastrointestinal origins, these neoplasms are categorized according to their ovarian correspondents, now including a new group of seromucinous tumors, which was introduced by the World Health Organization in 2013. Here we present the case of a 60-year-old man with a testicular tumor, showing focally stratified, immunohistochemical PAX8-positive epithelium and endometrioid-like stroma, supporting the diagnosis of seromucinous borderline tumor of ovarian-type surface epithelium. Mullerian Mucinous/Mixed Epithelial (Seromucinous) Ovarian Tumors
Abstract: Mullerian mucinous/mixed-epithelial (seromucinous) tumors are a distinctive type of ovarian epithelial tumor that may be benign, borderline, or malignant. These tumors contain mucinous columnar cells that resemble endocervical mucosa, with admixed other Mullerian cell types including indifferent eosinophilic, ciliated, endometrioid, and squamous metaplastic. These tumors are frequently associated with endometriosis. The multiple synonyms for this histologic type include Mullerian mucinous, mixed-epithelial, endocervical-like, and seromucinous. The last 2 terms have been used in World Health Organization (WHO) cla...

Nomogram to Predict Risk of Lymph Node Metastases in Patients With Endometrioid Endometrial Cancer
Pelvic lymphadenectomy in early-stage endometrial cancer is controversial, but the findings influence prognosis and treatment decisions. Noninvasive tools to identify women at high risk of lymph node metastasis can assist in determining the need for lymph node dissection and adjuvant treatment for patients who do not have a lymph node dissection performed initially. A retrospective review of surgical pathology was conducted for endometrioid endometrial adenocarcinoma at our institution. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis of selected pathologic features were performed. A nomogram to predict for lymph n...

Yolk sac tumours of the female genital tract in older adults derive commonly from somatic epithelial neoplasms: somatically derived yolk sac tumours
ConclusionsPathologists should be aware of the association between YST and an epithelial neoplasm, the former probably arising from the latter through a process of neometaplasia/retrodifferentiation. Those rare gynaecological pure glandular YSTs in adults may arise secondary to total overgrowth of an epithelial neoplasm. Pathologists need a high index of suspicion to diagnose the YST component, as the morphology is characteristically of a glandular variant with marked morphological overlap with adenocarcinomas. There is also often significant immunophenotypical overlap with epithelial neoplasms, as the YST component may be...

Impact of levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system use on the cancer risk of the ovary and fallopian tube.
CONCLUSIONS: LNG-IUS use associated with decreased risk for both invasive and borderline ovarian tumors. The incidence of primary fallopian tube carcinoma did not significantly differ between LNG-IUS users and the background population. Atypical proliferative endometrioid tumor of ovary: Report of a rare case
We report a case of a 45 year old female who presented with irregular bleeding per vaginum and underwent hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Atypical proliferative endometrioid tumor of the left ovary was an incidental finding, which is a very rare occurrence. (Source: Journal of Postgraduate Medicine)

The Association Between Talc Use and Ovarian Cancer: A Retrospective Case–Control Study in Two US States
Conclusion: Risks for epithelial ovarian cancer from genital talc use vary by histologic subtype, menopausal status at diagnosis, HT use, weight, and smoking. These observations suggest that estrogen and/or prolactin may play a role via macrophage activity and inflammatory response to talc. (Source: Epidemiology)

Differences in risk for type 1 and type 2 ovarian cancer in a large cancer screening trial.
CONCLUSION: These findings support the hypothesis that carcinogenic pathways for type 1 and type 2 ovarian cancer are different and distinct. The marked reduction in all ovarian cancer risk noted with a history of ectopic pregnancy and salpingectomy implies that the fallopian tube plays a key role in carcinogenesis for both type 1 and type 2 ovarian cancer. Sox10 expression in ovarian epithelial tumors is associated with poor overall survival
Abstract Sox10 is a transcription factor regulating the development of several cell lineages and is involved in tumor development. However, the clinicopathological relevance of Sox10 expression in ovarian cancer has not been examined. We assessed expression of Sox10 in ovarian epithelial tumors by immunohistochemistry and assessed its prognostic value by analyzing the correlation between its expression and clinicopathological factors. We used tissue microarrays including 244 ovarian epithelial tumors. Sox10 staining was found in the cytoplasm or nucleus of tumor cells. Malignant serous, mucinous, and endo...

Morphologic, Immunophenotypic, and Molecular Features of Epithelial Ovarian Cancer.
Abstract Epithelial ovarian cancer comprises a heterogeneous group of tumors. The four most common subtypes are serous, endometrioid, clear cell, and mucinous carcinoma. Less common are transitional cell tumors, including transitional cell carcinoma and malignant Brenner tumor. While in the past these subtypes were grouped together and designated as epithelial ovarian tumors, these tumor types are now known to be separate entities with distinct clinical and biologic behaviors. From a therapeutic standpoint, current regimens employ standard chemotherapy based on stage and grade rather than histotype. Howeve...

SATB2 Expression Distinguishes Ovarian Metastases of Colorectal and Appendiceal Origin From Primary Ovarian Tumors of Mucinous or Endometrioid Type
The primary origin of some ovarian mucinous tumors may be challenging to determine, because some metastases of extraovarian origin may exhibit gross, microscopic, and immunohistochemical features that are shared by some primary ovarian mucinous tumors. Metastases of primary colorectal, appendiceal, gastric, pancreatic, and endocervical adenocarcinomas may simulate primary ovarian mucinous cystadenoma, mucinous borderline tumor, or mucinous adenocarcinoma. Recently, immunohistochemical expression of SATB2, a transcriptional regulator involved in osteoblastic and neuronal differentiation, has been shown to be a highly sensit...

Morphological and Immunohistochemical Reevaluation of Tumors Initially Diagnosed as Ovarian Endometrioid Carcinoma With Emphasis on High-grade Tumors
Ovarian endometrioid carcinomas (OEC) of low grade have characteristic morphologic features, but high-grade tumors can mimic high-grade serous and undifferentiated carcinomas. We reviewed tumors initially diagnosed as OEC to determine whether a combination of pathologic and immunohistochemical features can improve histologic subclassification. Tumors initially diagnosed as OEC were reviewed using World Health Organization criteria. We also noted the presence of associated confirmatory endometrioid features (CEFs): (i) squamous metaplasia; (ii) endometriosis; (iii) adenofibromatous background; and (iv) borderline endometrio...

Statement by the Kommission Ovar of the AGO: The New FIGO and WHO Classifications of Ovarian, Fallopian Tube and Primary Peritoneal Cancer.
Authors: Meinhold-Heerlein I, Fotopoulou C, Harter P, Kurzeder C, Mustea A, Wimberger P, Hauptmann S, Sehouli J, Kommission Ovar of the AGO Abstract More than 25 years after the last revision, in 2012 the FIGO Oncology Committee began revising the FIGO classification for staging ovarian, Fallopian tube and primary peritoneal cancers. The new classification has become effective with its publication at the beginning of 2014. Following recent findings on the pathogenesis of ovarian, Fallopian tube and primary peritoneal cancer and reflecting standard clinical practice, the three entities have now been classif...
