A Rare Case of an Intestinal Ulcer
Question: A 66-year-old woman presented with bloody diarrhea over 2 months. One month before her hospitalization, she was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis after a colonoscopy. However, despite treatment with oral mesalamine and suppositories, she continued to have bloody diarrhea. She was admitted to our hospital for further examination. (Source: Gastroenterology)

Molecules, Vol. 26, Pages 3279: Amino Acids as the Potential Co-Former for Co-Crystal Development: A Review
ica Co-crystals are one of the most popular ways to modify the physicochemical properties of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) without changing pharmacological activity through non-covalent interactions with one or more co-formers. A “green method” has recently prompted many researchers to develop solvent-free techniques or minimize solvents for arranging the eco-friendlier process of co-crystallization. Researchers have also been looking for less-risk co-formers that produce the desired API’s physicochemical properties. This review purposed to collect the report studies of amino acids as the safe co-former...

Design, synthesis and molecular modeling studies of novel mesalamine linked coumarin for treatment of inflammatory bowel disease
In conclusion, Mesalamine-coumarin derivative reduces colonic damage in acetic acid induced ulcerative colitis in rat model, and therefore may prove to be effective in the management of IBD.PMID:33839254 | DOI:10.1016/j.bmcl.2021.128029 (Source: Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry Letters)

Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Are at Higher Risk for Meningitis
Conclusions: Although the overall rate of meningitis is low, IBD patients are at an increased risk compared with non-IBD comparators. Comorbidities are a risk factor for meningitis in IBD patients. Pneumococcal and meningococcal vaccinations should be discussed. (Source: Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology)

We are pleased to respond to letters from Stange et  al and Koch et al regarding the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) technical review and clinical practice guideline for the use of probiotics in the management of gastrointestinal disorders.1,2 Regarding the maintenance of remission in ulcerative colitis, Stange et al highlight a 201 5 systematic review and meta-analysis that concluded probiotic Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 is equivalent to mesalamine.3 This conclusion is not dissimilar to ours; both meta-analyses suggest a trend toward either no benefit or modest benefit. Adverse Drug Reactions from Real-World Data in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patients in the IBDREAM Registry
ConclusionsBased on real-world data, ADR reporting demonstrated new ADRs and higher incidences of ADRs to IBD therapies. This information will contribute to drug safety by updating the SmPCs, allowing better risk assessment and communication towards patients. (Source: Drug Safety)

Gut Microbiota and Related Metabolites Were Disturbed in Ulcerative Colitis and Partly Restored After Mesalamine Treatment
Mesalamine has been well used in the improvement of ulcerative colitis (UC) in clinics, however, the underlying mechanisms were not well illustrated. To explore its efficacy from the perspective of gut microbiota and related metabolites, we employed 16S rRNA sequencing and metabolomics approaches in stool samples across 14 normal healthy controls (NC group), 10 treatment-naïve UC patients (UC group) and 14 UC patients responded to mesalamine treatment (mesalamine group). We noted that the gut microbiota diversity and community composition were remarkably perturbed in UC group and partially restored by mesalamine treatment...

Eosinophilic colitis in children: a new and elusive enemy?
ConclusionThis study focus attention on EC as a new challenging pathology. Multicentric randomized clinical trials are needed to understand physiopathological mechanisms to validate a possible endoscopic score and related histological threshold, and to standardize therapy according to clinical features and instrumental findings. The high prevalence of EC in ASD need further specific research. (Source: Pediatric Surgery International)
