Real-world evidence of quality of life improvement in patients with distal ulcerative colitis treated by mesalazine: the Quartz study
Background Distal ulcerative colitis (UC) is responsible for distressing symptoms and reduces quality of life (QoL). Oral and topical formulations of 5-amino-salicylic acid are the first line therapy for mild to moderate distal UC. Objective Our aim was to evaluate the impact of mesalazine treatment for mild to moderate ulcerative proctitis and proctosigmoiditis on patient QoL. Methods Ninety-three patients with mild to moderate ulcerative proctitis and proctosigmoiditis, initiating a treatment with Pentasa, were prospectively included. The primary endpoint was the change from baseline to W8 in patient he...

Pre-clinical Investigation of Protective Effect of Nutraceutical D-Glucosamine on TNBS-induced Colitis
Immunopharmacol Immunotoxicol. 2022 Sep 26:1-33. doi: 10.1080/08923973.2022.2128370. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe level of precursors involved in the biosynthesis of glycosaminoglycan (GAG), glucosamine synthase, and N-acetyl glucosamine (NAG), are significantly reduced in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This results in deficient GAG content in mucosa, which eventually disrupts the gut wall integrity, provoking abnormal immunological responses. This is characterized by colossal liberation of inflammatory mediators including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukins (IL), and reactive oxygen species provokin...

Pharmacological Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease: a Century of Expert Opinions in Cecil Textbook of Medicine
Conclusions: The pharmacological management of IBD has been the focus of intense research and development in the past 60 years. The pillars of drug treatment have been 5-aminosalicylates and corticosteroids. Recent pharmacological innovations (immunomodulators and biologicals) constitute an encouraging paradigm shift in the treatment of UC and Crohn disease. (Source: American Journal of Therapeutics)

A Hydrogen-Sulfide Derivative of Mesalamine Reduces Severity of Intestinal and Lung Injury in Necrotizing Enterocolitis via Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase
CONCLUSIONS: An H2S-derivative of mesalamine improves outcomes in experimental NEC. Protective effects appear to be mediated through eNOS. Further research is warranted to explore whether ATB-429 may be an effective oral therapy to combat NEC.PMID:35912999 | DOI:10.1152/ajpregu.00229.2021 (Source: American Journal of Physiology. Relapse rates after withdrawal of thiopurines in patients with inflammatory bowel disease
ConclusionApproximately 50% patients with IBD in remission would relapse after 5  years of thiopurine withdrawal. Male sex and shorter treatment duration predict relapse. Treatment should be continued in patients who tolerate and maintain remission on long-term thiopurine. (Source: International Journal of Colorectal Disease)
