Positive cases of bovine genital campylobacteriosis and bovine trichomonosis in the eradication program of La Pampa, Argentina: 2008 –2021
AbstractBovine genital campylobacteriosis, caused by the gram-negative bacteriaCampylobacter fetus venerealis, and bovine trichomonosis, caused by the parasite protozoanTritrichomonas foetus, are venereal diseases that occur with long intercalving periods and abortion. The control of both diseases relies on microbiological testing and culling infected bulls. Vaccination and antibiotic treatment may help in controlling campylobacteriosis but are not recommended for trichomonosis control. Several regions of the world have active control programs for trichomonosis, not campylobacteriosis. In Argentina, the state of La Pampa a...

Traditional, cyberbullying, and suicidal behaviors in Argentinian adolescents: the protective role of school, parental, and peer connectedness
ConclusionThe findings underscore the critical prevalence of both bullying and cyberbullying among school-going Argentinian adolescents and their profound association with suicidal behaviors. The study emphasizes the importance of supportive family environments and peer and school connectedness in mitigating the negative effects of bullying and cyberbullying on mental health and suicide risk among adolescents. Usefulness of oxidative stress biomarkers in native species for the biomonitoring of pesticide pollution in a shallow lake of the Austral Pampas, Argentina
Chemosphere. 2024 Feb 29:141578. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.141578. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPesticide contamination and its adverse effects on native freshwater species continue to be a worldwide major concern, mainly in developing countries. Passive biomonitoring of pesticide pollution in shallow lakes may be achieved by the simultaneous use of fish and wetland plants. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of current-use pesticides in the surface water of a shallow lake of the Austral Pampas region (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina) surrounded by intensive agricultural activities and its rela...

Diversity response of necrophagous dipteran communities and their functional groups to an anthropization gradient
In conclusion, this study enhances our understanding of the ecological adaptations of necrophagous dipterans to anthropogenic disturbances. The observed shifts in diversity and abundance have implications for forensic investigations and public health, emphasizing the need for nuanced monitoring and conservation strategies. This research contributes valuable insights into the intricate ecological interactions of these insect communities within changing ecosystems.PMID:38431136 | DOI:10.1016/j.actatropica.2024.107164 (Source: Acta Tropica)

Implementing precision oncology in Latin America to improve patient outcomes: the status quo and a call to action for key stakeholders and decision-makers
Ecancermedicalscience. 2024 Jan 8;18:1653. doi: 10.3332/ecancer.2024.1653. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: The advent of precision oncology (PO) has revolutionised diagnostic and follow up strategies and improved clinical outcomes for cancer patients. However, socio-economic inequalities in the level of implementation of PO in different countries is a prevailing issue. To improve this situation, the Latin America Patients Academy has gathered the recommendations of healthcare professionals and social civil members experienced in cancer management from Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Panama, Colombia...

< em > LuciA-15 < /em > - a real-world prospective study of PARP inhibitors for the treatment of patients with HER-2 negative metastatic breast cancer with germline and/or somatic mutation of BRCA genes or homologous recombination repair related genes
CONCLUSION: This is the first evidence in a Latin-American population that replicates the data already published in randomised clinical trials and other scanty real-world evidence studies in this field, showing positive results in rwORR and rwPFS, and encouraging data in rwOS. Notably, there was a high proportion of patients with visceral progression even with visceral crisis and need for CT. Interestingly, there were similar rwOS results among subgroups (TNBC versus ER + ve/HER2-ve, talazoparib versus olaparib, etc).PMID:38414929 | PMC:PMC10898875 | DOI:10.3332/ecancer.2023.1634 (Source: Ecancermedicalscience)

Exploring gender disparities in the disease and economic tobacco-attributable burden in Latin America
The objective of this study was to explore the differences in tobacco-attributable disease and economic burden between men and women in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, and Peru.METHODS: We used a previously validated economic model to quantify the impact of tobacco-related illnesses, including morbidity, mortality, healthcare costs, productivity losses, informal care expenses, and DALYs, by gender and age. We utilized data from national surveys, records, studies, and expert opinions to populate the model.RESULTS: In 2020, there were 351,000 smoking-attributable deaths. Men accounted for 69%...

Chemical Profile and Biological Potential of Scaptotrigona Bee Products (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Meliponini): An review
Chem Biodivers. 2024 Feb 28:e202301962. doi: 10.1002/cbdv.202301962. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStingless bees belong to the Meliponini tribe and are widely distributed in the tropics and subtropics, where they perform important ecological services. Among the best distributed groups of stingless bees is the genus Scaptotrigona, which includes 22 species distributed throughout the neotropical region, including the area from Mexico to Argentina. Bees of this genus are responsible for the production of products such as honey, propolis, geopropolis and fermented pollen ("saburá"). This review aimed to provide an overview o...

Bacterial Strains Isolated from Stingless Bee Workers Inhibit the Growth of Apis mellifera Pathogens
Curr Microbiol. 2024 Feb 28;81(4):106. doi: 10.1007/s00284-024-03618-8.ABSTRACTApis mellifera bees are an important resource for the local economy of various regions in Argentina and the maintenance of natural ecosystems. In recent years, different alternatives have been investigated to avoid the reduction or loss of colonies caused by pathogens and parasites such as Ascosphaera apis, Aspergillus flavus, and Paenibacillus larvae. We focused on bacterial strains isolated from the intestine of native stingless bees, to elucidate their antagonistic effect on diseases of A. mellifera colonies. For this purpose, worker bees of ...
