1099 Chicago Suburbs vs W2 for New Grads
This is for all the upcoming grads who want to be in the Chicago area. I apologize in advance if this does not belong in this sub forum. I hear yet another exclusive group of long established anesthesiologists are about to be replaced by a big box AMC. That’s now 4 hospitals within the last 3 years or so. All have been unsuccessful in transitioning folks to a stable W2 job. The new hires all have erratic shifts while the 1099 folks get their desired shifts and come out ahead in terms of... DMU vs TCOM
Hello! I have been lucky enough to be accepted into both TCOM and DMU. I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts between these two schools? As a Texas resident, I believe TCOM is less expensive by far, but also has more research opportunities and I have family close by. On the other hand, I believe DMU has higher pass rates on step exams as well as may be slightly better as a founding school for residency programs. I am most interested in pathology and anesthesiology in case that makes any... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

billing
Hi Anesthesia friends, I have a question about billing. when a CRNA does a case and has "supervision" - do you send out two bills? We recently had our insurance billed $2700 x 2 for CRNA and physician billing for an hourlong procedure - seems rather not legit. What is the rate typically for anesthesia services for docs and CRNAs? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How much would my class ranking matter for a residency match?
My school advisor suggested aiming for at least the 40th percentile in class rank if applying for anesthesiology or surgery. The dean's letter will indicate the top 20% and top 40%. Points are assigned as follows: Honor (+4), Pass (+3), Retest (+2, not shown on transcript), and Remediation (+1, shown on transcript). Internal ranking is based on these points. The dean's letter addresses only preclinical class rank. If I don't have good recognition with the class rank, would it be a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Life Insurance: Experiences when purchasing?
Hello All, First time, long time. I am a trainee but at this stage of my life, it seems to make sense to purchase life insurance (recently married with a little one on the way and I am not getting any younger). I used a WCI recommended agent to purchase disability insurance earlier in my training and the agent was very helpful and straightforward. I feel like I have a disability insurance plan that works well for me. For those who have purchased life insurance, do you recommend going... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Cardiac vs Critical care
Looking for any insight anyone might have regarding pursuing fellowship in either of these and specifically comparing practice options. I am not particularly interested in academics which I understand may make crit care more difficult. Cardiac is intriguing because I enjoy TEE and the complexity of the cases, but not sure how thrilled I would be to do a fellowship just to spend a majority of my time doing routine lap appys with some CT cases mixed in. Crit care appeals because of the change... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

There ’s no specialty with the knowledge base/skill set that EM has and that kinda sucks
MS3 here deciding on specialty. Long story short back in 2018 I decided to go to medical school to be an EM physician. Now I’m very aware of all the problems facing EM as much as I can be. I have developed some interest in other specialties like IM, anesthesia, radiology, critical care, which have aspects of medicine that I like, but I don’t feel that any of them have the wide knowledge base, diagnostic skills, and procedural skills that EM has (and that I so desire as a physician) and... FAER MSARF summer program - what are my chances?
Hi everyone! Thank you for taking the time to read! I am an OMS-1 interested in anesthesiology. I am thinking about applying to the FAER MSARF summer research program. I was wondering if the program typically takes DO students. Would a low MCAT score affect my chances? I am in good academic standing at my medical school. I would appreciate any advice from previous applicants on how I can stand out in my application! Thanks! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Carbon Dioxide Myth
So, are we hyperventilating our patients during surgery and causing harm? Dr. Lewis Coleman seems to think so. 50 Years Lost in Medical Advance: The Discovery of Hans Selye’s Stress Mechanism Kindle Editionby Lewis coleman Many of his ideas are unconventional but seem convincing and certainly worth examining in more detail. Total knee replacement under PNB
We are asked to follow joint commission standards for total joint replacements. It says PNB can also be used as primary anesthetic for TKR. I've never done one under just PNB. For you guys who do these under just PNB, what combination of blocks do you do? Anything to watch out for? Thanks! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Contract review lawyer suggestion
Hey everyone. Is anyone here familiar with contract lawyers in Chicago? I'm in the process of exploring options for my contract review and was considering either Contract Diagnostic or Contract Rx from White Coat Investor. Before making a decision, I wanted to reach out here and see if anyone has recommendations for a reliable contract lawyer in Chicago. Personal experiences or any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks (Source: Student Doctor Network)
