W2 job + 1099 locum
I am a hospital employed pain doc. Have been thinking about doing locum anesthesia a couple of times a month given this hot anes job market. I am not very educated in finance and will be very appreciated if you guys could answer some questions. Will the 1099 job open the opportunity to contribute a whole IRA contribution (not sure how much) each year? I max out 403b and 457 from my W2 job plus a backdoor IRA. What about writing off some expenses with this 1099 income? I’ve heard there... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Oral airways in pacu
What’s your guys policy with oral airways in pacu ? The pacu nurses are complaining that patients are coming out too sleepy with oral airway in place and it’s a safety issue. Surprised because this was never an issue at other hospitals I practiced at. We cover many hospitals but this was in issue at a fast turnover private practice ambulatory surgical center… (Source: Student Doctor Network)

State of Locums market
I am hearing that the number of Locum opportunities are decreasing from different Locum companies. I know a handful of my friends who are all doing full time locums work including call. The AMCs that are running the hospital are not able to fully staff anesthesiologist groups because every 3 nights call, poor pay, flat reimbursement and not based on productivity. The result is that full timers are not doing any cases till 3-5 Pm and make the locums do all the day time cases. Full timers... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Transferring to Anesthesia? Looking for Advice
Surgery resident here looking for advice about transferring to an anesthesiology program, hopefully into a CA1 spot. To keep things as anonymous as possible I'll not share a lot of details as to why I want to change programs/specialties. I am resident in good standing with my program and I still very much enjoy surgery. However I am to the point were I am not sure if I can finish the residency. I am working about 14-16hrs per day and I am on a 24hr call/back-up every other week which leaves... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Scalp IV for adults?
Hey gang, I'm festering away in another knee, and this lady's forehead veins are calling my name. It's got me thinking - In a jam (tucked arms, difficult IV access, etc.), have you ever utilized a scalp IV in an adult? I've done the shoulder or breast before, but never had the gall to stick a needle in the noggin. Have you? Would you? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

24 hour “shifts” crna vs MD
Seems the trend for anesthesia is 24 hours shifts especially crnas This is a problem. A big problem These crnas literally work 7 “shifts” on average a month The math is simple 7x24 equals 168 hours 160 hours divided by 4 weeks equals 40 hours a week. Now some docs i know are getting into the train gravy train. Working 2 days a week for 450k. This frees up a world of opportunities to either travel or make even more money on side gigs. The 24 hours crnas are artificially creating a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

guarantee non in house (beeper) locums guaranteed money
I’m not gonna to tell where this is at. But I’m sure its all over the country and completely negotiable. Seems like desperation sets in but somehow my friends are getting 10k flat rate for local community hospital with 90% chance of being done by 8pm and no call backs. MD only. 24 hour weekend call. Hospital wants beeper rate but since there is super light ob. U kinda of need to be around the area even without a running epidural. 90% of the time. No laboring patients after 6/7pm usually... Prosth, Perio, OMFS, or GP?
I’m a D4 student, and I’m interested in prosth, perio, and oral surgery. I’m interested in doing things like extraction, full mouth rehabilitation, all-on-4, implants, anesthesia, and sinus lift. I can’t decide which specialty I like the most because we can’t do these advanced procedures at dental school, so I’m planning to do a GPR first to get more experience in doing more complex cases, so that I can decide what I want to do. Prosth: I think I may be a little more interested in prosth... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Pain versus cardiac fellowship?
I like both pain and cardiac, but can’t decide between the two. I know they are vastly different, but I would just like some extra training after residency and was wondering what attendings/people with more experience than me would advise? Thank you (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Hi everyone, I’ve been out of residency for 10 years now. Been working for PP in VA. Things are ok here, but the current market is offering a much higher salary compared to 10yrs ago with more time off. I’ve seen 400k ASC job, no call, nights, weekends with substantial time off. I’m looking to move to NC (triangle area or within 1 hr drive) to be closer and spend more time with my family. I would appreciate any advice, red flags to be aware of, and if anyone knows people who are currently... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
