Measuring value of telemonitoring in obstructive sleep apnea patient pathway optimization in hospital: a Spanish example
During the COVID pandemic, access to sleep therapy labs was limited, increasing waiting lists. Therefore, telemonitoring (TM), although already in use for monitoring purposes in this hospital, its use was expanded to titrate and follow patients remotely. Our aim was to measure the impact of expanded TM use on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) pathway. Time-Driven Activity-Based Costing (TDABC) was implemented to compare previous and new pathways from patient referral to follow-up. A scorecard with patient, process and cost outcomes was developed for comparison. Healthcare professionals’ time decreased by 9% (167 vs 152 m...

Quality of Professional Life Among Dermatologists: Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic and Suggestions for Improvement
CONCLUSIONS: Female dermatologists reported heavier workloads. Heavy caseloads and more remote work were the main changes identified after the COVID-19 pandemic. Heavy caseloads have a significant impact on the QPL of dermatologists in Spain. Reducing caseloads would improve general job satisfaction and quality of care provision.PMID:37884261 | DOI:10.1016/j.ad.2023.10.012 (Source: Actas Dermo-Sifiliograficas)

Rebound in sexually transmitted infections after the COVID-19 pandemic
AIDS Rev. 2023;26(3):127-135. doi: 10.24875/AIDSRev.23000015.ABSTRACTSexually transmitted infections (STIs) have become the second in the global rating of infectious diseases after respiratory infections. Globally, over 1 million, new STI is diagnosed every day. Although four conditions are the most representative and of obligatory declaration (gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia, and human immunodeficiency virus [HIV]), there are many other prevalent STI, including trichomona, herpes simplex, papillomavirus, and viral hepatitis. Herein, we perform a narrative and retrospective review, analyzing information from public database...

Safety and Benefits of COVID-19 Vaccination in Pregnancy —Implications for the Maternal Vaccination Platform
The development of safe and effective vaccines against the novel SARS-CoV-2 virus, the cause of COVID-19 pandemic, was justifiably hailed as a major advance in protecting the population against severe and fatal infection. The vaccine rollout was targeted toward recognized communities at risk, including older adults, those with comorbidities, and those who were immunosuppressed. Pregnant women, and by extension, their infants, were included in these high-risk groups for vaccination. The prioritization of pregnant women was justified from historical observations of disproportionate mortality and morbidity during previous inf...

Historic dam removal poses challenge of restoring both river and landscape
Standing on an outcrop of volcanic rock, Joshua Chenoweth looks across the languid waters of California’s Iron Gate Reservoir and imagines the transformation in store for the landscape. In early 2024, operators will open the floodgates on the 49-meter-high dam that blocks the Klamath River, allowing the more than 50 million tons of water it impounds to begin to drain. Once it’s gone, heavy equipment will dismantle the structure. All that will remain of the 11-kilometer-long reservoir that filled the valley for 60 years will be steep-sided slopes coated in gray mud, split once again by a free-flowing river. Within...

Innovative shortcuts and initiatives in primary health care for rural/remote localities: a scoping review on how to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSION: The findings highlight and summarize knowledge about initiatives and innovations developed to face the COVID-19 pandemic, within the PHC scope in rural and remote areas in the world. This review has identified collective, clinical, intersectoral and, mainly, organizational health initiatives. An articulation between different government levels would be paramount in evaluating the implementation of policies and protocols in rural and remote locations for future sanitary crises. Innovations and lessons learned are equally relevant in strengthening health services and systems. This issue calls for considerable fur...
