Innovative shortcuts and initiatives in primary health care for rural/remote localities: a scoping review on how to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSION: The findings highlight and summarize knowledge about initiatives and innovations developed to face the COVID-19 pandemic, within the PHC scope in rural and remote areas in the world. This review has identified collective, clinical, intersectoral and, mainly, organizational health initiatives. An articulation between different government levels would be paramount in evaluating the implementation of policies and protocols in rural and remote locations for future sanitary crises. Innovations and lessons learned are equally relevant in strengthening health services and systems. This issue calls for considerable fur...

Mortality reduction in older COVID-19-patients hospitalized in Spain during the second pandemic wave from the SEMI-COVID-19 Registry
The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the admission of older patients during the different waves, before SARS-CoV-2 vaccination was available, was associated with a different mortality. We compared the mortality rates of patients hospitalized during 2020 before (first wave) and after (second wave) July 7, 2020, included in the SEMI-COVID-19 Registry, a large, multicenter, retrospective cohort of patients admitted to 126 Spanish hospitals for COVID-19. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to control for changes in either the patient or disease profile. As of December 26, 2022, 22,494 patie...

Social Connectedness and Perceived Stress Among Caregivers During the COVID-19 Pandemic: a Mixed-Methods Study
ConclusionFindings suggest social connectedness may be beneficial for reducing perceived stress, but its impact can vary depending on individual circumstances. Overall, findings support the idea that caregivers are a particularly vulnerable sub-group of the population and may benefit from more targeted support and interventions. The Efficiency of Bacterial Vaccines on Mortality during the 'Spanish' Influenza Pandemic of 1918-19
Soc Hist Med. 2023 May 8;36(2):219-234. doi: 10.1093/shm/hkad012. eCollection 2023 May.ABSTRACTThe worldwide 'Spanish' influenza pandemic of 1918-19, which extended into the 1920s, infected more than a third of the world's population and killed an estimated 50-100 million people, more than the civilian and military casualties of World War I. Present-day medical scholars, journalists, and other commentators have often ignored, downplayed or treated with scepticism the role of bacterial vaccines in reducing mortality during the pandemic. There have been repeated claims in this century that these vaccines were 'useless', 'con...

Telemedicine in Elderly Hypertensive and Patients with Chronic Diseases during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Telemedicine is of proven value and has been especially useful in the COVID-19 pandemic. A mixed remote-presential model is most efficient. Appropriate training in this area for physicians and patients, together with correct provision, is essential to prevent errors in implementation and use.PMID:37834803 | DOI:10.3390/jcm12196160 (Source: Rural Remote Health)

Current Approach in the Management of Secondary Immunodeficiency in Patients with Hematological Malignancies: Spanish Expert Consensus Recommendations
J Clin Med. 2023 Oct 4;12(19):6356. doi: 10.3390/jcm12196356.ABSTRACTA Delphi-based survey was designed to assess the opinions of clinical hematologists (n = 17) and clinical immunologists (n = 18) from across Spain on secondary immunodeficiencies (SID) in the management of oncohematological patients. There was 100% agreement on the need to have available guidelines for the management of immunodeficiency in hematological patients; to perform a baseline immunological evaluation in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), multiple myeloma (MM), lymphoma and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) recipients; ...

Contributing Factors to Delays in COVID-19-Related Hospitalization Among Latinx and Spanish-Speaking Patients/Factores Que Contribuyen a Retrasos en Hospitalizaciones Relacionadas con COVID-19 Entre Pacientes Latinos e Hispano-Hablantes
Background: Latinx populations have been more heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic than the general population of the US, including higher rates of hospitalization due to COVID-19 in eastern Massachusetts. We conducted a qualitative study to better understand the experiences of Latinx and Spanish-speaking patients who had clinically significant COVID-19 in the early months of the pandemic. Methods: Thirteen qualitative, semistructured, phone interviews were conducted between December 2020 and April 2021 with Latinx and Spanish-speaking patients who had experienced clinically significant COVID-19 in the metro-north Bo...

Latino Adolescent-Mother Language Concordance, Neighborhood Deprivation, and Vaccinations in Community Health Centers
ConclusionIn a multistate analysis of vaccinations among Latino and non-Latino adolescents, English-preferring adolescents with Spanish-preferring mothers had the highest completion rates and English-preferring non-Hispanic white dyads the lowest. Further research can seek to understand why this language dyad may have an advantage in adolescent vaccination completion. (Source: Maternal and Child Health Journal)

Killer 1918 flu didn ’t pick on the healthy, after all
Influenza tore through the world’s population in 1918 and 1919, killing up to 50 million people. One counterintuitive feature of this pandemic has puzzled researchers ever since. According to contemporary accounts and later demographic studies, a disproportionately large number of young, healthy individuals died. A new analysis of skeletons from the time challenges this notion, suggesting that people who were already frail were the most likely to succumb, as is true for most pandemics. “It’s an important study,” says epidemiologist Andrew Noymer of the University of California, Irvine, who wasn’t connected ...
