Health and sociodemographic determinants of excess mortality in Spanish nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic: a  2-year prospective longitudinal study
CONCLUSION: Almost half of this sample of nursing home residents died in the 2‑year period, and one fifth were attributed to COVID-19. Functional impairment was a risk factor for overall mortality and COVID-19 mortality, independent of age and risk of sarcopenia.PMID:38625391 | DOI:10.1007/s00391-024-02294-4 (Source: Zeitschrift fur Gerontologie und Geriatrie)

Open Respir Arch. 2020 Jul-Sep;2(3):179-185. doi: 10.1016/j.opresp.2020.05.009. Epub 2020 Aug 17.ABSTRACTThe state of alarm declared by the Spanish government as the main measure for preventing contagion has involved a change in the clinical management of chronic patients. Although new communication technologies offer us many ways to establish direct but remote contact, the peculiarities of the COPD patient often mean that their healthcare is reduced to telephone calls. The challenge of caring for COPD patients is made even more complex when it has to be delivered over the phone. The interview must be conducted without exa...

Impact of dementia on 30-, 180-, and 365-day mortality during the first pandemic wave in older adults seen in spanish emergency departments diagnosed with or without COVID-19
CONCLUSION: Dementia in older adults attending Spanish EDs during the first pandemic wave was independently associated with 30-, 180- and 365-day mortality. This impact was lower when adjusted for age, sex, comorbidity and disability, and was greater in patients diagnosed with COVID-19.PMID:38597417 | DOI:10.1080/13607863.2024.2337144 (Source: Aging and Mental Health)

Pandemic —Proofing for the Future
For years, infectious disease experts warned that we were overdue for a pandemic. They were right. When COVID-19 struck, I recalled the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918 (often mislabeled as the “Spanish flu”). There were four waves of recurrence through 1920, and it wasn’t until the mid-1920s that the pandemic was felt to be “over.” Naively, I assumed the COVID-19 pandemic wouldn’t last that long because we are smarter now and science has progressed! But we repeated many of the struggles faced during that historical episode, including denials about the seriousness of the situation and misinformation about cause...

Clinical characteristics and outcomes among hospitalised COVID-19 patients across epidemic waves in Spain: An unCoVer analysis
CONCLUSIONS: In summary, the study associate hospital mortality with factors such as advanced age and comorbidities. The decline in mortality after the 4th wave indicates potential influences like vaccination, viral adaptation, or improved treatments. Notably, dementia and cancer metastases emerge as critical factors linked to higher mortality, highlighting the importance of addressing these conditions in COVID-19 management and preparing for future challenges.PMID:38555273 | DOI:10.1016/j.medcli.2023.12.030 (Source: Medicina Clinica)
