Clinical, Epidemiological, and Laboratory Features of Mayaro Virus Infection: a Systematic Review
AbstractPurpose of ReviewMayaro virus is an arbovirus that circulates in a wild cycle transmitted byHaemagogus janthinomys; however, case reports in urban areas suggest that other arthropods could be acting as vectors. It shares several similarities with Chikungunya virus, being highly probable that many cases are being misdiagnosed. The disease caused by this pathogen is known as Mayaro fever, which is restricted to regions of Central and South America, mainly the Amazon rainforest. Cases of Mayaro fever have continuously been increasing, suggesting that Mayaro virus would become another major epidemic arbovirus in Americ...

Fc-mediated functions and the treatment of severe respiratory viral infections with passive immunotherapy – a balancing act
Passive immunotherapies have been used to treat severe respiratory infections for over a century, with convalescent blood products from recovered individuals given to patients with influenza-related pneumonia as long ago as the Spanish flu pandemic. However, passive immunotherapy with convalescent plasma or hyperimmune intravenous immunoglobulin (hIVIG) has not provided unequivocal evidence of a clinical benefit for severe respiratory infections including influenza and COVID-19. Efficacy trials, primarily conducted in late-stage disease, have demonstrated inconsistent efficacy and clinical benefit for hIVIG treatment of se...

Dégano Cancer is the second leading cause of death. It is thus essential to examine cancer trends in all regions. In addition, trend data after 2019 and on cancer 1-year mortality are scarce. Our aim was to analyze incidence and 1-year mortality cancer trends in northeastern Spain during 2005–2020. We used the Osona Tumor Registry, whi...

The global pandemic's second deadly hit: cancer care
After thoroughly reading the study entitled “The Impact of COVID-19 on Patients Diagnosed with Melanoma, Breast and Colorectal Cancer,1” we would like to congratulate the authors on a thoughtful article and consideration of a relevant and emerging topic. With over 770 million confirmed cases and 6.9 million deaths, the COVID-19 pandemic m arks the most significant global health crisis since the Spanish Flu.2 It has had unpredictable and unforeseen circumstances in terms of widespread infection, individual and community socio-economic impact, and allocation of health-care resources. Drastic mobility restrictions during SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: an opportunity to learn about constraints on the way to a pollution-free city
In this study, air and noise pollution levels and road traffic flow were analyzed in the city of Cáceres, Spain, before and during the state of emergency imposed by the Spanish government. The values obtained were compared with the quality limits established by both the Spanish government and the World Health Organization (WHO). A traffic noise prediction model has been employed to evaluate the acoustic impact resulting from the reduction in traffic flow. As a result of this study, it was found that air pollution was indeed reduced due to the mobility restrictions imposed to control the pandemic, but that the WHO's recomm...

Disruption of Healthcare in New York City During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Findings From Residents Living in North and Central Brooklyn, the South Bronx, and East and Central Harlem
CONCLUSIONS: Due to the pandemic, some disruption to healthcare was expected. However, most study participants either avoided or experienced a delay in healthcare. The delay of non-COVID related healthcare throughout the pandemic may result in the further widening of the health inequity gap among NYC residents dealing with a higher chronic disease burden before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. Findings from this study can support equitable COVID-19 recovery, and guide efforts with health promotion.PMID:37905997 | DOI:10.1177/21501319231205992 (Source: Primary Care)
