Prognostic Factors in Resolution of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) post Bariatric Surgery in Adolescents

Obesity among children is a concerning health problem in the United States, leading to an array of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 14.7 million children are impacted by obesity (19.7% prevalence, 2017-2020). (1) The development and progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), characterized by excess intrahepatic storage of lipids (triglyceride), has been linked to obesity. NAFLD is the most common cause of chronic liver disease, which can progress to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
