Osteopenia is associated with wasting in pancreatic adenocarcinoma and predicts survival after surgery
Bone density loss accompanies skeletal muscle atrophy in pancreatic cancer. Osteopenia is the single strongest predictor of 2-year survival following curative surgery. AbstractPancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is among the deadliest of all common malignancies. Treatment is difficult and often complicated by the presence of cachexia. The clinical portrait of cachexia contributes to the poor prognosis experienced by PDAC patients and worsens therapeutic outcomes. We propose that low bone mineral density is a component of cachexia, which we explore herein through a retrospective review of all patients at our facility th...

Rapid redesign and effect on clinical workload of a supra-regional burns and plastic surgery service during the COVID-19 pandemic
In March 2020, South Wales experienced the most significant COVID-19 outbreak in the UK outside of London. We share our experience of the rapid redesign and subsequent change in activity in one of the busiest supra-regional burns and plastic surgery services in the UK. Molecules, Vol. 26, Pages 5697: Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction of Four Medicinal Mediterranean Plants: Investigation of Chemical Composition and Antioxidant Activity
nca Trebše With everyday advances in the field of pharmaceuticals, medicinal plants have high priority regarding the introduction of novel synthetic compounds by the usage of environmentally friendly extraction technologies. Herein, a supercritical CO2 extraction method was implemented in the analysis of four plants (chamomile, St. John’s wort, yarrow, and curry plant) after which the non-targeted analysis of the chemical composition, phenolic content, and antioxidant activity was evaluated. The extraction yield was the highest for the chamomile (5%), while moderate yields were obtained for the other three plants. T...

Pharmacologic approaches to prevent skeletal muscle atrophy after spinal cord injury
Curr Opin Pharmacol. 2021 Aug 27;60:193-199. doi: 10.1016/j.coph.2021.07.023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSkeletal muscle atrophy is a hallmark of severe spinal cord injury (SCI) that is precipitated by the neural insult and paralysis. Additionally, other factors may influence muscle loss, including systemic inflammation, low testosterone, low insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1, and high-dose glucocorticoid treatment. The signaling cascades that drive SCI-induced muscle loss are common among most forms of disuse atrophy and include ubiquitin-proteasome signaling and others. However, differing magnitudes and patterns of a...

The Microbiome of the Medicinal Plants Achillea millefolium L. and Hamamelis virginiana L.
In the recent past many studies investigated the microbiome of plants including several medicinal plants (MP). Microbial communities of the associated soil, rhizosphere and the above-ground organs were included, but there is still limited information on their seasonal development, and in particular simultaneous investigations of different plant organs are lacking. Many studies predominantly addressed either the prokaryotic or fungal microbiome. A distinction of epi- and endophytic communities of above-ground plant organs has rarely been made. Therefore, we conducted a comprehensive investigation of the bacterial and fungal...

Effects of < em > Achillea millefolium < /em > on cisplatin induced ocular toxicity: an experimental study
Conclusion: Collectively, our results suggest that Achillea millefolium have protective effects against cisplatin-induced ocular toxicity and is a promising adjuvant therapy with the potential to prevent cisplatin related ocular toxicity.PMID:34180746 | DOI:10.1080/15569527.2021.1919137 (Source: Cutaneous and Ocular Toxicology)

Functional heart recovery in an adult mammal, the spiny mouse
Ischemic heart disease and the resulting heart failure continue to carry high morbidity and mortality, and a breakthrough in our understanding of this disorder is needed. The adult spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus) has evolved the remarkable capacity to regenerate full-thickness skin tissue, including microvasculature and cartilage, without fibrosis or scarring. We hypothesized that lack of scarring and resulting functional regeneration also applies to the adult Acomys heart. (Source: International Journal of Cardiology)

Sensitivity of implicit evaluations to accurate and erroneous propositional inferences
Cognition. 2021 Jun 2;214:104792. doi: 10.1016/j.cognition.2021.104792. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExplicit (directly measured) evaluations are widely assumed to be sensitive to logical structure. However, whether implicit (indirectly measured) evaluations are uniquely sensitive to co-occurrence information or can also reflect logical structure has been a matter of theoretical debate. To test these competing ideas, participants (N = 3928) completed a learning phase consisting of a series of two-step trials. In step 1, one or more conditional statements (A → B) containing novel targets co-occurring with valenced adject...

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Social Media Boom: Potential Concerns of Social Media Use for the Surgeon
Social media has become an integral part of today's society for personal and professional use. There has been a surge in social media accounts associated with oral maxillofacial surgery, whether it be those of practicing surgeons, surgical residents, or oral and maxillofacial surgery programs. With the COVID-19 pandemic, oral and maxillofacial surgery programs have utilized social media to meet several independent goals, especially since in-person interaction is not possible. Some goals include creating a channel for direct communication with prospective residents or residents from other programs, announcing externship opp...
