Iranian Journal of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology: A Bibliometric and Altmetric Analysis from 2005 to 2022
This study aimed to present a bibliometric and altmetric Analyses of the Iranian Journal of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology (IJAAI). The citation performance and altmetric data were extracted from Scopus and Altmetric Explorer, respectively. Analyses were done using SPSS 26, Microsoft Excel, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace. The results of the bibliometric analysis revealed that IJAAI had experienced respectable growth. Among the total citations, 4746 citations belong to the first decade (2005-2014) and 3,035 citations belong to the second (2015-2022). The findings demonstrated the significance of IJAAI among Iranian researchers. ...

Advancing Ocular Safety Research: A Comprehensive Examination of Benzocaine Acute Exposure without Animal Testing
Toxicol Lett. 2024 Mar 6:S0378-4274(24)00051-1. doi: 10.1016/j.toxlet.2024.03.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBenzocaine is a widely employed local anaesthetic; however, there is a notable dearth of preclinical and clinical evidence regarding its safety in ophthalmological products. To address this, a comprehensive strategy incorporating in silico and in vitro methodologies was proposed for assessing benzocaine's ocular toxicity without animal testing. To collect the in silico evidence, the QSAR Toolbox (v4.5) was used. A single exposure to two benzocaine concentrations (2% and 20%) was evaluated by in vitro methods. He...

Beyond the headlines: The impact of the affordable care act on equitable access to bariatric surgery
In 2010, stories about Wikileaks and the daring rescue of Chilean Miners dominated the headlines, but none of these news features were as sensational as healthcare reform.1 On March 23, 2010 the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) was signed, and its potential impact, benefits, and shortcomings were discussed with a wide array of responses, from support to upheaval.2 The Act was signed with the goal of increasing health equity and access for millions of Americans. Now, over a decade after implementation, the lasting impact and success of the ACA has begun to be questioned and studied. (Source: American Journal of Surgery)

Infodemiology and infoveillance: framework for contagious exanthematous diseases, of childhood in Italy
CONCLUSIONS: Infectious disease searches using Google and Wikipedia can be useful for public health surveillance and help policy makers implement prevention and information programs for the population, in addition to the fact that increases in searches could represent an early warning in the detection of outbreaks.PMID:38411130 | DOI:10.1080/20477724.2024.2323844 (Source: Pathogens and Global Health)

Oral administration of Alcohol-Tolerant Lactic Acid Bacteria Alleviates Blood Alcohol Levels and Ethanol-Induced Liver Damage in Rodents
This study aimed to evaluate the potential of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) to alleviate alcohol-induced effects and behavioral responses. The two LAB strains isolated from kimchi, Levilactobacillus brevis WiKim0168 and Leuconostoc mesenteroides WiKim0172, were selected for their ethanol tolerance and potential to alleviate hangover symptoms. Enzyme activity assays for alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) were conducted to evaluate the role of these bacteria in alcohol metabolism. Through in vitro and in vivo studies, these strains were assessed for their ability to reduce blood alcohol concentrat...

Development of an adverse outcome pathway network for nephrotoxicity
This study utilised established criteria to develop an AOP network that connects thirteen individual AOPs associated with nephrotoxicity (as sourced from the AOP-Wiki) to identify several key events (KEs) linked to various adverse outcomes, including kidney failure and chronic kidney disease. Analysis of the modelled AOP network and its topological features determined mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and tubular necrosis to be the most connected and central KEs. These KEs can provide a logical foundation for guiding the selection and creation of in vitro assays and in silico tools to substitute for animal-based...

Billionaire launches plagiarism detection effort against MIT president and all its faculty
Already embroiled in a high-profile effort to oust the president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Bill Ackman, a hedge fund manager with an estimated worth of $4 billion , says he is now launching a plagiarism check of cell biologist Sally Kornbluth along with all the school’s faculty and its board members. Ackman has for weeks called for the firing or resignation of Kornbluth, a former Duke University provost who became president of MIT 1 year ago. His latest action, announced on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, comes after A...

A taste of ambrosia: Do Olympic medalists live longer than Olympic losers?
CONCLUSIONS: Disciplines classified as engaging mostly power were linked to shorter lifespans, whereas those involving predominantly skill were associated with longer life durations. The interaction of being a medalist and sport was found to be significant. Medalists in the disciplines of athletics, basketball, boxing, equestrian sports, wrestling, and water polo had significantly shorter lives (the final item was insignificant after correction for multiple comparisons). Olympic achievement was linked to length of life in mainly individual, not team, sports.PMID:38180004 | DOI:10.1177/14034948231219833 (Source: Scandinavia...
