Interactive neuroinflammation pathways and transcriptomics-based identification of drugs and chemical compounds for schizophrenia
Conclusions: New neuroinflammatory pathways incorporating the extracellular matrix, glutamatergic neurons, and astrocytes in the aetiology of schizophrenia were established. Transcriptomics based network analysis provided novel targets, including extra-synaptic glutamate receptors, glutamate transporters and extracellular matrix molecules that can be evaluated for therapeutic strategies.PMID:37961844 | DOI:10.1080/15622975.2023.2281514 (Source: The World Journal of Biological Psychiatry)

Metabolites of Kimchi Lactic Acid Bacteria, Indole-3-Lactic Acid, Phenyllactic Acid, and Leucic Acid, Inhibit Obesity-Related Inflammation in Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells
J Microbiol Biotechnol. 2023 Oct 31;34(3):1-8. doi: 10.4014/jmb.2308.08015. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGiven the diversity of vegetables utilized in food fermentation and various lactic acid bacteria (LAB) populations in these materials, comprehensive studies on LAB from vegetable foods, including kimchi, are imperative. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the obesity-related inflammation response of three metabolites-phenyllactic acid (PLA), indole-3-lactic acid (ILA), and leucic acid (LA)-produced by LAB (Companilactobacillus allii WiKim39 and Lactococcus lactis WiKim0124) isolated from kimchi. Their effects on...

Proximity of alcohol outlets and presentation to hospital by young people after self-harm: A retrospective geospatial study using the integrated data infrastructure
CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study show a clear association between young people's access to alcohol outlets and presentation to hospital for self-harm and may provide a mandate for government policies and universal interventions to reduce young people's access to alcohol outlets. Further research regarding causative mechanisms is needed.PMID:37888830 | DOI:10.1177/00048674231203909 (Source: The Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry)

How shrinking corn could help farmers —and the environment
Related podcast Making corn shorter, and a book on finding India’s women in science BY Sarah Crespi , Angela Saini , Erik Stokstad On 10 August 2020, a record-breaking windstorm raced across Iowa, the big buckle of the U.S. Corn Belt. Gusts up to 225 kilometers per hour flattened fields and buildings, with losses totaling an estimated $12 billion across several states. “It was devastating,” says Kelly Gillespie, a crop physiologist...
