Butyrate, Valerate, and Niacin Ameliorate Anaphylaxis by Suppressing IgE-Dependent Mast Cell Activation: Roles of GPR109A, PGE2, and Epigenetic Regulation
J Immunol. 2024 Jan 10:ji2300188. doi: 10.4049/jimmunol.2300188. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTShort-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are produced by the intestinal microbiota during the fermentation of dietary fibers as secondary metabolites. Several recent studies reported that SCFAs modulate the development and function of immune-related cells. However, the molecular mechanisms by which SCFAs regulate mast cells (MCs) remain unclear. In the current study, we analyzed the function and gene expression of mouse MCs in the presence of SCFAs in vitro and in vivo. We found that the oral administration of valerate or butyrate amelior...

Niacin - a scoping review for Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2023
Food Nutr Res. 2023 Dec 12;67. doi: 10.29219/fnr.v67.10299. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTNiacin is the precursor to pyridine nucleotides NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) and NADP (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate). Niacin (vitamin B3) is the common term for nicotinic acid, nicotinamide and derivatives that exhibit the biological activity of nicotinamide. Furthermore, the indispensable amino acid tryptophan is the substrate for de novo synthesis of NAD. Thus, the requirements and intake of niacin are expressed as niacin equivalents (NE). The focus of interest for niacin over the last decade has primarily been ...

Niacin increases human aortic endothelial Sirt1 activity and nitric oxide: effect on endothelial function and vascular aging
CONCLUSIONS: Translationally, these findings suggest that Sirt1 activation by niacin may be one of the mechanisms of action of niacin acting on NO to improve endothelial function and mitigate human vascular aging and its deleterious cardiovascular consequences.PMID:38186996 | PMC:PMC10767546 (Source: American Journal of Translational Research)

Association between niacin intake and knee osteoarthritis pain and function: a longitudinal cohort study
ConclusionThe association between increased niacin intake and reduced pain and function scores, as well improved quality of life in knee OA patients, is significant. Certain cohorts, according to a stratified analysis, could see more considerable benefits with increased niacin consumption.Highlights• Increased niacin intake is linked to reduced knee pain and better function in OA patients.• Specific subgroups, such as middle-aged individuals, women, and those with certain dietary habits, benefit more from increased niacin consumption.• Niacin shows promise for enhancing the quality of life in knee OA patients by redu...

The potential prophylactic and therapeutic impacts of niacin on ischemia/reperfusion injury of testis
The testicular ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury is characterized by the excessive aggregation of un-scavenged reactive oxygen species, leading to the heightened levels of oxidative stress. This phenomenon plays a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of testicular torsion damage. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Urology)
