Development of a diet quality score and adherence to the Swiss dietary recommendations for vegans
CONCLUSION: The newly developed DQS-V provides a single score for estimating diet quality among vegan adults. Further validation studies examining the DQS-V in relation to an independent dietary assessment method and to biomarkers of nutritional intake and status are still needed before the general application of the DQS-V.PMID:38291526 | PMC:PMC10829326 | DOI:10.1186/s41043-024-00498-3 (Source: Journal of Health, Population, and Nutrition)

Effect of Egg-white Protein Alone or Combined with Niacin on Nutritional Status, Phosphorus Control, and Circulating FGF-23 in Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Niacin is reported to decrease phosphorus concentration in Maintenance Hemodialysis (MHD) patients. Egg white is one of the main substitutable proteins in MHD patients due to its low phosphorus content. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effects of combined egg white and niacin supplementation on dialysis patients' serum phosphorus and nutritional biomarkers. (Source: Journal of Renal Nutrition)

Nicotinamide employs a starvation strategy against Porphyromonas gingivalis virulence by inhibiting the heme uptake system and gingipain activities
In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effect of nicotinamide (NAM), a vitamin B3 derivative, on the growth and virulence ofPorphyromonas gingivalis, a key member of the red complex. Our findings revealed that NAM inhibited bacterial growth and gingipain activities, which played a dominant role in protein hydrolysis and heme acquisition. NAM decreased hemagglutination and hemolysis abilities and changed hemin and hemoglobin binding capacities, controlling bacterial infection through a starvation strategy by blocking access to growth-essential nutrients from the outside and reducing bacterial virulence. Several exper...

Butyrate, Valerate, and Niacin Ameliorate Anaphylaxis by Suppressing IgE-Dependent Mast Cell Activation: Roles of GPR109A, PGE2, and Epigenetic Regulation
J Immunol. 2024 Jan 10:ji2300188. doi: 10.4049/jimmunol.2300188. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTShort-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are produced by the intestinal microbiota during the fermentation of dietary fibers as secondary metabolites. Several recent studies reported that SCFAs modulate the development and function of immune-related cells. However, the molecular mechanisms by which SCFAs regulate mast cells (MCs) remain unclear. In the current study, we analyzed the function and gene expression of mouse MCs in the presence of SCFAs in vitro and in vivo. We found that the oral administration of valerate or butyrate amelior...

Niacin - a scoping review for Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2023
Food Nutr Res. 2023 Dec 12;67. doi: 10.29219/fnr.v67.10299. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTNiacin is the precursor to pyridine nucleotides NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) and NADP (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate). Niacin (vitamin B3) is the common term for nicotinic acid, nicotinamide and derivatives that exhibit the biological activity of nicotinamide. Furthermore, the indispensable amino acid tryptophan is the substrate for de novo synthesis of NAD. Thus, the requirements and intake of niacin are expressed as niacin equivalents (NE). The focus of interest for niacin over the last decade has primarily been ...

Niacin increases human aortic endothelial Sirt1 activity and nitric oxide: effect on endothelial function and vascular aging
CONCLUSIONS: Translationally, these findings suggest that Sirt1 activation by niacin may be one of the mechanisms of action of niacin acting on NO to improve endothelial function and mitigate human vascular aging and its deleterious cardiovascular consequences.PMID:38186996 | PMC:PMC10767546 (Source: American Journal of Translational Research)
