Does long-term use of pain relievers have an impact on the rate of orthodontic tooth movement? A systematic review of animal studies.
Conclusions: Long-term consumption of pain relievers may affect the rate of orthodontic tooth movement. The orthodontist should be capable of identifying patients taking pain relievers independently of orthodontic treatment and consider the possible implications. Analgesic efficacy of ketorolac associated with a tramadol/acetaminophen combination after third molar surgery - a randomized, triple-blind clinical trial.
CONCLUSIONS: The current study showed that both ketorolac and the combination of ketorolac plus tramadol/acetaminophen showed good control of pain after the extraction of the lower third molars. Although the combination group showed lower pain at 9 h, the difference is small and not clinically relevant. Herbal medicines in Iran advertised as opioid withdrawal drugs - analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry
ConclusionsNearly all of the handmade and illegally distributed herbal medicines for the treatment of drug withdrawal contained at least one opioid or illegal drug, indicating that there was evidence of adulteration and highlighting the dangers to users. It is important to raise awareness of people, particularly warning them against the use of such products sold by herbal shops for the treatment of addiction. Opioid Prescribing Habits in Sickle Cell Disease: An International Survey of Providers
This study aimed to describe the opioid prescribing habits among international providers treating individuals with SCD, to better assess the different medications used for outpatient management of SCD-related pain both in the United States (US) and internationally. Methods: A thirty-question REDcap survey was disseminated electronically. Participants were recruited using a combination purposive and snowball sampling strategy. Providers were initially identified by email using databases from SCD conferences. After the initial responses were received, responding participants were asked to refer other providers who treat SCD.R...

Acetaminophen reduces acute and persistent incisional pain after hysterectomy.
CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that acetaminophen reduces the risk and intensity of persistent incisional pain. However, there are other mechanisms by which acetaminophen might reduce persistent pain. KEY WORDS: Anesthesia, acetaminophen, Persistent surgical pain, Postoperative acute pain. Impact of rescheduling hydrocodone-combination products in an urban Texas county healthcare system.
CONCLUSION: The scheduling change of HCPs is associated with an immediate decrease in hydrocodone-acetaminophen use at our institution while a simultaneous rise in acetaminophen-codeine products was observed. PMID: 30234922 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Journal of Opioid Management)

Acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and tramadol analgesic interactions after adenotonsillectomy.
CONCLUSION: Ibuprofen has an EC50 for analgesia in children similar to that of adults (3.95 mg/L; 95%CI 2.57-7.53, vs 5-10 mg/L adults). The maximum effect from combination therapy (ie, 65% reduction in pain score) achieves satisfactory analgesia with commonly used doses but increased dose adds little additional benefit. The addition of tramadol to this analgesic mixture prolongs analgesia duration. PMID: 30117229 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Paediatric Anaesthesia)

Alternating Current Iontophoresis for Control of Postoperative Pain.
Authors: Kubota K, Miyamoto T, Inoue T, Fukayama H Abstract Control of early postoperative pain entails the use of various medications including acetaminophen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors, tramadol, and opioids. However, these medications should be carefully administered in patients with aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease because some medications may trigger adverse reactions after maxillofacial surgeries. The goal of postoperative pain control in patients with aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease is to eliminate pain without complications. Local anes...

Comparing the Efficacy of Peritonsillar Injection of Tramadol With Honey in Controlling Post-Tonsillectomy Pain in Adults
Conclusion: The current investigation confirmed the positive impact of tramadol on post-tonsillectomy pain relief in adults. The authors also found that honey can be used as a complementary treatment along with acetaminophen and other analgesics for reducing post-tonsillectomy pain. Considering honey impact on wound healing and its anti-inflammatory effect, it is suggested for relieving complications after surgery. (Source: Journal of Craniofacial Surgery)

Effects of human SULT1A3/SULT1A4 genetic polymorphisms on the sulfation of acetaminophen and opioid drugs by the cytosolic sulfotransferase SULT1A3.
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of human SULT1A3 and SULT1A4 genes on the sulfating activity of SULT1A3 allozymes toward these analgesic compounds. Twelve non-synonymous coding SNPs (cSNPs) of SULT1A3/SULT1A4 were investigated, and the corresponding cDNAs were generated by site-directed mutagenesis. SULT1A3 allozymes, bacterially expressed and purified, exhibited differential sulfating activity toward each of the four analgesic compounds tested as substrates. Kinetic analyses of SULT1A3 allozymes further revealed significant differences in binding affinit...

Novel Pharmacological Nonopioid Therapies in Chronic Pain
AbstractPurpose of ReviewOpioid use and abuse has led to a worldwide opioid epidemic. And while opioids are clinically useful when appropriately indicated, they are associated with a wide range of dangerous side effects and whether they are effective at treating or eliminating chronic pain is controversial. There has long been a need for the development of nonopioid alternative treatments for patients that live in pain, and until recently, only a few effective treatments were available. Today, there are a wide range of nonopioid treatments available including NSAIDs, acetaminophen, corticosteroids, nerve blocks, SSRIs, neu...
