People’s beliefs about pronouns reflect both the language they speak and their ideologies.
Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, Vol 153(5), May 2024, 1388-1406; doi:10.1037/xge0001565Pronouns often convey information about a person’s social identity (e.g., gender). Consequently, pronouns have become a focal point in academic and public debates about whether pronouns should be changed to be more inclusive, such as for people whose identities do not fit current pronoun conventions (e.g., gender nonbinary individuals). Here, we make an empirical contribution to these debates by investigating which social identities lay speakers think that pronouns should encode (if any) and why. Across four studies, parti...

Primary immune regulatory disorders (PIRD): expanding the mutation spectrum in Turkey and identification of sixteen novel variants
In this study, we report the identification of 38 disease-causing variants, including 16 novel ones, detected in 40 patients across 15 distinct PIRD genes. The application of next-gene ration sequencing enabled rapid and precise diagnosis of patients with PIRDs. (Source: Immunologic Research)

The association of FRAX with predictors of falls in the assessment of postmenopausal osteoporosis in Turkey: the fracture study of Turkey (FRACT study)
ConclusionAssessment of fall risk predictors should be one of the major pillars in the physical evaluation of osteoporotic patients in the FLS setting. FRAX is a useful tool to determine the fracture risk of patients with both static and dynamic balance impairments. Combining balance assessment with FRAX may be an important step to optimize osteoporosis risk assessment. (Source: Archives of Osteoporosis)

The Environment and Headache: a Narrative Review
AbstractPurpose of ReviewIn this narrative review, we summarize the peer-reviewed literature published between 2017 and 2022 that evaluated ambient environmental risk factors for primary headache disorders, which affect more than half of the population globally. Primary headache disorders include migraine, tension-type headache (TTH), and trigeminal and autonomic cephalalgias (TAC).Recent findingsWe identified 17 articles that met the inclusion criteria via PubMed or Google Scholar. Seven studies (41%) relied on data from US populations. The remaining studies were conducted in China, Taiwan, Germany, Ghana, Japan, the Neth...

Loneliness, Psychological Well-being, Depression, and Social Participation in the Older Persons: Rural and Urban Differences
CONCLUSION: The increasing elderly population worldwide has become an issue that requires global measures. Place of residence is one of the factors thought to affect older people's health and well- being. It is thought that the study data will contribute to new policies that will ensure the protection and promotion of elderly health and those working in this field. In addition, the study, which provides information about Turkish culture, will also enable intercultural comparisons.PMID:38638048 | DOI:10.2174/0118746098297063240409070531 (Source: Current Aging Science)

Role of Critical Shoulder Angle in Degenerative Type Rotator Cuff Tears: A Turkish Cohort Study
CONCLUSIONS CSA measurement on radiographs is a useful diagnostic tool in the Turkish population, and an above-average CSA value is associated with a significantly increased incidence of degenerative-type FTRCT.PMID:38637980 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.943703 (Source: Medical Science Monitor)

Immunogenicity and protective efficacy of a multivalent herpesvirus vectored vaccine against H9N2 low pathogenic avian influenza in chicken
This study investigated H9- and ND-specific humoral and mucosal responses, H9-specific cell-mediated immunity, and protection conferred by the rHVT-H9-F vaccine in specific pathogen-free (SPF) chickens. Vaccination elicited systemic NDV F- and AIV H9-specific antibody response but also local antibodies in eye wash fluid and oropharyngeal swabs. The ex vivo H9-specific stimulation of splenic and pulmonary T cells in the vaccinated group demonstrated the ability of vaccination to induce systemic and local cellular responses. The clinical protection against a challenge using a LPAIV H9N2 strain of the G1 lineage isolated in M...

Mindfulness and Well-being: A Longitudinal Serial Mediation Model of Psychological Adjustment and COVID-19 Fear
AbstractNumerous studies have been carried out globally related to COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic, most of which were cross-sectional. Therefore, there is a need for longitudinal studies to fully understand the impact of COVID-19 on mental health. In the present longitudinal study, our aim was to examine whether psychological adjustment and fear of COVID-19 would serially mediate the relationship between mindfulness and well-being in a Turkish sample (N = 300,Mage=22.21 years, SD  = 3.01, 60.3% female). The results of a two-wave longitudinal study were analyzed via bootstrapping. The findings of the seria...

A dangerous tradition: retrospective analysis of celebratory gunfire-related injuries in three tertiary hospitals
CONCLUSION: Sociologically, gun ownership is often associated with prestige and can trigger the use of firearms in celebrations, such as weddings, in some societies. However, this tradition can result in tragic consequences worldwide. Stricter regulations and legal frameworks are necessary to prevent the use of unlicensed weapons. Collaborative efforts are crucial for effectively addressing the societal normalization of celebratory gunfire. Future prospective studies can comprehensively evaluate the incidence of CGRI and identify effective preventive strategies to safeguard public health.PMID:38634853 | DOI:10.14744/tjtes....

Is it possible to predict mortality in patients with high-grade blunt liver injury? A single trauma center study
CONCLUSION: Base deficit, hemoglobin (Hb), lactate levels, injury severity, liver injury grade, accompanying abdominal injuries at admission, and erythrocyte suspension demands were found to be associated with increased mortality rates. Certain cutoff values for the aforementioned parameters could be established. However, further data are required to confirm these findings.PMID:38634851 | DOI:10.14744/tjtes.2024.60646 (Source: Turkish Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery : TJTES)
