The effect of dexmedetomidine on the postoperative recovery of patients with severe traumatic brain injury undergoing craniotomy treatment: a retrospective study
ConclusionThe use of DEX in the ICU can effectively reduce the incidence of delirium in patients who return to the general ward after craniotomy. DEX had no adverse effect on the prognosis of patients other than causing bradycardia. (Source: European Journal of Medical Research)

Airway Management for Acute and Reconstructive Burns: Our 30-year Experience
Semin Plast Surg DOI: 10.1055/s-0044-1786008Airway management in both acute and reconstructive burn patients can be a major challenge for evaluation, intubation, and securing the airway in the setting of altered airway structure. Airway evaluation in both acute and reconstructive patients includes examination for evidence of laryngeal and supraglottic edema and structural changes due to trauma and/or scarring that will impact the successful approach to acquiring an airway for surgical procedures and medical recovery. The approach to acquiring a successful airway is rarely standard laryngoscopy and often requires fiberoptic...

Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita causing hypercapnic respiratory failure and airway obstruction in an adult patient
This case highlights arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) as a rare cause of hypercapnoeic respiratory failure and airway obstruction in adults and emphasizes the usage of leak-port in tracheostomy-NIV (non-invasive-ventilation) specially in resource poor setting when the tracheostomy-NIV mask is unavailable. Individual patient data meta-analysis on awake pediatric extracorporeal life support: Feasibility and safety of analgesia, sedation and respiratory support weaning, and physiotherapy
CONCLUSION: Awake ECLS strategy with active physiotherapy can be applied in children from neonatal age. Ambulation is also possible in selected cases. Complications related to such management were limited. Further studies on aECLS are needed to evaluate safety and efficacy of early physiotherapy and define patient selection.PMID:38652693 | DOI:10.1177/02676591241240377 (Source: Perfusion)

Ultrasound mapping of soft tissue vascular anatomy proximal to the larynx: a prospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Given the prevalence of arteries and veins, particularly in areas where tracheostomies are commonly performed, we strongly advocate for routine ultrasound assessments before such procedures are performed.PMID:38653329 | DOI:10.4097/kja.23900 (Source: Korean Journal of Anesthesiology)

Factors Associated With Time to Decannulation in Patients With Tracheostomy Following Severe Traumatic Brain Injury
CONCLUSIONS: This study found that a change in swallowing ability is a potentially significant factor for reducing time to decannulation. Identifying factors that could explain differences in time to decannulation is essential for patient outcomes, especially if these factors are modifiable and could be targeted in rehabilitation and treatment.PMID:38649274 | DOI:10.4187/respcare.11376 (Source: Respiratory Care)

A historical cohort study on predictors for successful weaning from prolonged mechanical ventilation and up to 3-year survival follow-up in a rehabilitation center
CONCLUSION: Successful weaning from PMV may be associated with better survival and allows chronically ventilated patients to become independent on a ventilator. A larger study is needed to further validate our findings.PMID:38642907 | DOI:10.1016/j.rmed.2024.107636 (Source: Respiratory Care)

Multidrug-resistant pathogens and ventilator-associated pneumonia in critically ill COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients: a prospective observational monocentric comparative study
CONCLUSION: COVID-19 patients with VAP appear to have a significantly higher ICU and in-hospital mortality risk regardless of the presence of MDR and DTR pathogens. Tracheostomy and a shorter duration of mechanical ventilation appear to be associated with better outcomes.PMID:38637766 | PMC:PMC11027225 | DOI:10.1186/s12931-024-02779-1 (Source: Respiratory Care)
