Enhancing tube feeding method for neurosurgery: the application of improved PICC technique
ConclusionIn patients with neurosurgical diseases, especially those with tracheostomy and nuchal stiffness, the IECG-IBP PICC catheter insertion method can effectively reduce the patient's neck resistance, does not increase the patient's headache and dizziness symptoms, and does not reduce the success of one-time catheterization. Rate and does not increase the incidence of jugular venous ectopia. (Source: European Journal of Medical Research)

Impact of Early Tracheostomy Following Lung Transplantation: A National Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The present study supports the safety of early tracheostomy among lung transplant recipients and highlights several potential benefits. Among appropriately selected patients, tracheostomy placement prior to postoperative day 8 may facilitate early discharge, lower costs, and reduced odds of posttransplant infection.PMID:38360346 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2024.02.013 (Source: The Annals of Thoracic Surgery)

Lessons for the next pandemic: analysis of the timing and outcomes including post-discharge decannulation rates for tracheostomy in severe COVID-19 respiratory failure
ConclusionsWe report the first comprehensive analysis of ET and LT that includes LTAC outcomes and stabilization markers in relation to the tracheostomy. ET was associated with improved clinical outcomes and a short LOS, specifically on days of pre-tracheostomy ventilation and in-hospital decannulation rates. Predicting risk of tracheostomy after cardiac surgery: a decade of insights from nearly 10,000 patients
CONCLUSIONS: A risk prediction model for requiring tracheostomy after cardiac surgery is proposed in this study. A history of New York Heart Association III/IV, chronic lung disease, and myocardial infarction as well as undergoing valve surgeries were associated with increased risk of requiring a tracheostomy.PMID:38343482 | PMC:PMC10857673 | DOI:10.1080/08998280.2024.2302798 (Source: Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings)

A thyroidea ima artery variation providing collateral circulation to the mediastinum
AbstractThe thyroidea ima artery (TIA) is a highly variable arterial deviation of the blood supply to the thyroid gland with critical implications for surgical neck procedures such as tracheostomy. Though relatively common in the population at large (~  4%), most TIA variations are related to the origin of the artery and whether it emerges from the common sites of the brachiocephalic trunk, aortic arch, and right common carotid artery, or another more unique vessel—as opposed to its dispersion pattern. TIA variants generally supply the thyroid gland, occasionally co-occurring with absent thyroid arteries. Here, we repo...

A Large Adult Postcricoid Lymphatic Malformation: A Case Report and Literature Review
In this study, we presented a 36-year-old female presented with globus sensation, dysphagia, and upper airway obstruction, requiring a tracheostomy. A computed tomography scan identified a 5 cm × 4.5 cm × 3 cm multilocular hypodense lesion in the postcricoid. Due to its considerable size, complete resection with function preservation was crucial, and a standard microscopic direct laryngoscopy approach may result in inadequate exposure, while an open transcervical approach may affect functional outcomes and increase surgical complications. We successfully performed an en bloc resection with a transoral endoscopic approach...

A Clinical Study on Microbiological Profile in Tracheostomy Wounds
This study was a retrospective analysis of microbiological profile, antibiotic sensitivity& resistance pattern in patients with a tracheostomized wound. A retrospective review of the microbiological profiles of all adult patients who underwent a tracheostomy was conducted between May 2022 and May 2023 at our hospital. Based on the tracheostomy indications, patients were allocated under obstructed and non-obstructed group. Any patient with at least one positive sample was followed up quarterly for a year. The first culture result obtained was recorded at least one month following the last antibiotic dose in each quarter...

Prolonged Mechanical Ventilation, Weaning, and the Role of Tracheostomy
Depending on the definitional criteria used, approximately 5% to 10% of critical adults will require prolonged mechanical ventilation with longer-term outcomes that are worse than those ventilated for a shorter duration. Outcomes are affected by patient characteristics before critical illness and its severity but also by organizational characteristics and care models. Definitive trials of interventions to inform care activities, such as ventilator weaning, upper airway management, rehabilitation, and nutrition specific to the prolonged mechanical ventilation patient population, are lacking. A structured and individualized ...
