Alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan core-shell microspheres co-loaded with docetaxel/doxorubicin reverse chemotherapy resistance in anaplastic thyroid carcinoma
CONCLUSION: A-DOX@C-DTX microspheres exhibited superior anti-tumor effects compared to free drug treatment both in vitro and in vivo, particularly against drug-resistant ATC cells. This improved therapeutic efficacy may be attributed to the enhanced drug uptake and reduced drug efflux in drug-resistant ATC cells facilitated by ALG/CMC microspheres.PMID:38661518 | DOI:10.1089/thy.2024.0023 (Source: Thyroid : official journal of the American Thyroid Association)

Does the extent of neck surgery based on preoperative calcitonin level influence survival in medullary thyroid carcinoma: a retrospective tertiary centre experience
CONCLUSION: There was no statistically significant difference in outcomes between high and low calcitonin groups. A selective approach to performing LND in MTC patients based on clinical and imaging findings suggesting disease presence in the lateral neck should be explored further.PMID:38661438 | DOI:10.1308/rcsann.2024.0033 (Source: Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England)

Identification and validation of an anoikis-related genes signature for prognostic implication in papillary thyroid cancer
This study explored the impact of anoikis on PTC prognosis. Analyzing data from GEO, TCGA, and GeneCards, we identified a prognostic signature consisting of six anoikis-related genes (ARGs): EZH2, PRKCQ, CD36, INHBB, TDGF1, and MMP9. This signature independently predicted patient outcomes, with high-risk scores associated with worse prognoses. A robust predictive ability was confirmed via ROC analysis, and a nomogram achieved a C-index of 0.712. Differences in immune infiltration levels were observed between high- and low-risk groups. Importantly, the high-risk group displayed reduced drug sensitivity and poor responses to...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1646: Protective Effects of Melatonin against Carcinogen-Induced Oxidative Damage in the Thyroid
a Melatonin, primarily synthesized in the pineal gland, plays a crucial role in regulating circadian rhythms and possesses significant antioxidative properties. By neutralizing free radicals and reducing oxidative stress, melatonin emerges as a promising agent for the prevention and therapy of many different disorders, including cancer. This paper reviews the relationship between the thyroid gland and melatonin, presenting experimental evidence on the protective effects of this indoleamine against oxidative damage to macromolecules in thyroid tissue caused by documented carcinogens (as classified by the International A...

Calcium oxalate crystals as a cause of multiple punctate echogenic foci in benign thyroid lesions
ConclusionAppearance of MPEF in GDs and FNDs is not because of psammoma bodies; it is attributable to CaOx crystals larger than 100  μm. Therefore, MPEF is not an indicator of malignancy. (Source: Journal of Medical Ultrasonics)

Patterns in the Reporting of Aggressive Histologic Subtypes in Papillary Thyroid Cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Aggressive subtypes of PTC are associated with worse outcomes. Academic and other facilities in the Middle Atlantic were more likely to report aPTC. This suggests the need for further evaluation of environmental or geographic factors versus a need for increased awareness and more accurate diagnosis of these subtypes.PMID:38657351 | DOI:10.1016/j.jss.2024.03.023 (Source: Cell Research)

Efficacy and safety of fibrin sealant application in patients undergoing thyroidectomy: a systematic review and meta-analysis
BMC Surg. 2024 Apr 24;24(1):122. doi: 10.1186/s12893-024-02414-2.ABSTRACTVarious studies have focused on the application of fibrin sealants (FS) in thyroid surgery. Utilizing a meta-analysis, this systematic review analyzed the findings of recent randomized controlled trials on the safety and efficacy of FS in patients who underwent thyroidectomy. The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, PubMed, and Medline databases were searched for relevant studies, without any language restrictions. Seven randomized controlled trials were included in the originally identified 69 studies. Overall, 652 patients received FS during th...

Thyroid Cancer and Endocrine Disruptive Chemicals: A Case-Control Study on Per-fluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) and Other Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)
CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests, for the first time in a case-control population, that exposure to some PFAS and PCBs associates with TC and some clinical and molecular features. On the contrary, an inverse correlation was found with both PFHxS and pollutants' mixture, likely due to a potential reverse causality.PMID:38657654 | DOI:10.1530/ETJ-23-0192 (Source: Cancer Control)

Extra-nuclear tert counteracts oxidative stress and promotes progression in papillary thyroid carcinoma
The reactivation of TERT is associated with poor outcome in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). Extra-telomeric functions of TERT were reported, with a protective role against oxidative stress (OS). The aim of the present study was to explore the extra-nuclear TERT localization in PTC and its role in cancer progression.TERT nuclear export under OS were analyzed in K1 PTC cell line. We investigated the role of different TERT localizations using specific TERT constructs that limit its localization to the nucleus or to the mitochondria. (Source: Translational Research)
