A Fasting Population Exhibits Lower COVID-19 Severity and Mortality
Researchers here report that an epidemiological study population that practices long term intermittent fasting suffered a lesser severity and lower mortality rate in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. The SARS-CoV-2 virus produces mortality via runaway inflammatory signaling, and people with a greater burden of chronic inflammation, such as through age or obesity, are less resilient. Intermittent fasting lowers inflammatory signaling, but it also produces a range of other benefits that improve resistance to infection. Further, it may be the case that the ability to fast on a schedule for decades selects for people ...

Digital Vaccines – Can This AI Tool Save Us from Ourselves?
The following is a guest article by Dr. Neecey Hudson, PhD – Founder & Chief Scientist at Hood Medicine Initiative. Pandemic preparedness has now become a paramount concern across the globe. From vaccine supply chain logistics to hospital capacity management, many nations have failed to provide competent response measures that equitably protect their citizens and reduce the spread of infection, while low and middle-income countries (LMICs) are facing enormous challenges to do so. This global crisis has tested our ability as a civilization to respond to public health emergencies and mitigate the impact of geopo...

How Inflation Erodes Financial Privacy
Nicholas AnthonyThe hidden tax of inflation has been a  little less hidden lately. From grocery stores to gas stations, people are seeing prices rise before their eyes. Yet it’s not just our wallets that are paying the price. For 50 years, inflation has helped the U.S. government increase financial surveillance under the Bank Secrecy Act by silently increasing the activities banks must report in their effort to counter financial crime. One of the key requirements of the 1970Bank Secrecy Act was that banks must report to the government any time a  customer’s financial activity crosses any number of thresholds. For ins...

Public Alerted to Omicron in New Mexico Through Quick Detection
Genetic material inside a virus. Credit: iStock. Over the past 2 years, you’ve probably heard a lot about the spread of SARS-CoV-2—the virus that causes COVID-19—and the emergence of variants. The discovery and tracking of these variants is possible thanks to genomic surveillance, a technique that involves sequencing and analyzing the genomes of SARS-CoV-2 virus particles from many COVID-19 patients. Genomic surveillance has not only shed light on how SARS-CoV-2 has evolved and spread, but it has also helped public health officials decide when to introduce measures to help protect people. In December 2021, the N...
