Generating high-valent iron-oxo ≡Fe < sup > IV < /sup > =O complexes by calcium sulfite activation in neutral microenvironments for enhanced degradation of CIP
Environ Pollut. 2023 Aug 24:122449. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2023.122449. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough alkaline sulfite activation of ferrate (Fe(VI)) has advantages of fast response and high activity for degradation of organic contaminants, the specific production pathways of active species and the pH conditions still hinder its widespread application. Based on this, our study constructed a novel advanced oxidation process of calcium sulfite (CaSO3) could activated Fe(VI) continuously by Ca2+ buffering and investigated the mechanism under different pH values and CaSO3 dosages with ciprofloxacin as a target organic ...

The Impact of Rapid Drug Susceptibility Tests on Gonorrhea Burden and Lifespan of Antibiotic Treatments: A Modeling Study Among Men Who Have Sex With Men in the United States
Am J Epidemiol. 2023 Aug 24:kwad175. doi: 10.1093/aje/kwad175. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRapid point-of-care tests that diagnose gonococcal infections and identify susceptibility to antibiotics enable individualized treatment. This could improve patient outcomes and slow the emergence and spread of resistance. However, little is known about the long-term impact of such diagnostics on the burden of gonorrhea and the effective lifespan of antibiotics. We used a mathematical model of gonorrhea transmission among men who have sex with men in the US to project the annual rate of reported gonorrhea cases and the effective li...

Preparation and in Vitro/In Vivo Characterization of Sustained-Release Ciprofloxacin-Carrageenan Complex
Eur J Pharm Biopharm. 2023 Aug 22:S0939-6411(23)00215-1. doi: 10.1016/j.ejpb.2023.08.012. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe goal of the study was to look into drug-polyelectrolyte complexation between ciprofloxacin (Cipro) and λ-carrageenan (CRG), and to employ the complex as a sustained-release matrix. The maximum binding capacity of the complexation was determined using the dialysis bag method and employed to prepare the complex. In comparison to Cipro, CRG, and their physical mixing, the complex was examined using differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier infrared spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and scanning e...

Poultry production as the main reservoir of ciprofloxacin- and tigecycline-resistant extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing < em > Salmonella enterica < /em > serovar Kentucky ST198.2-2 causing human infections in China
In this study, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) analysis divided 327 S. Kentucky ST198 isolates into two clades, of which ST198.2 is more prevalent than ST198.1 worldwide. We further compared the genomic characteristics of 70 ST198 isolates from animals and humans during 2019-2022 plus previously reported 38 isolates from 2013 to 2019 in China. One hundred five of the 108 isolates were ST198.2, which could be differentiated into two subclades. ST198.2-1 was prevalent in isolates during 2013-2019, while ST198.2-2 has increased to be the predominant subclade in isolates since 2019. CRISPR typing can differentiate the clade ST19...
