Fast g-C < sub > 3 < /sub > N < sub > 4 < /sub > sonocoated activated carbon for enhanced solar photocatalytic oxidation of organic pollutants through Adsorb & amp; Shuttle process
This study discusses the coating of as-prepared biomass based activated carbon by g-C3N4 using three routes, namely ball milling (AC-CN@BM), physical stirring (AC-CN@Phy) and ultrasonic assisted coating (AC-CN@US). The coating mechanisms by different processes were discussed using different characterization techniques. Ball milling based coating provides good g-C3N4 dispersion on the surface of AC, however, a partial degradation of g-C3N4 structure and a lower surface area were confirmed by FTIR, XRD and BET analysis. Physically designed sample shows a significant agglomeration of particles on the surface of AC. However, u...

pH-responsive magnetic biocompatible chitosan-based nanocomposite carrier for ciprofloxacin release
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Aug 7:126228. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126228. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe pH-sensitive and magnetic-triggered release ensures the effective delivery of drugs. Chitosan carries amine pendants that encourage the fabrication of pH-responsive carriers. Montmorillonite (MMt), an attractive nano-clay in drug delivery possessing high encapsulation properties, was magnetized through the co-precipitation of Fe3+/Fe2+ ions. The study aimed to integrate the magnetic montmorillonite (mMMt) into the chitosan matrix and crosslinked by citric acid (CA) to achieve the nanocomposite carrier with double-...

Occurrence and risk assessment of pharmaceuticals in hospital wastewater in Costa Rica
Chemosphere. 2023 Aug 5:139746. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.139746. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis work aims to determine the occurrence, hazard and prioritization of pharmaceuticals from hospital wastewater in Costa Rica through the monitoring of 70 compounds and assessing their environmental risk through a hazard quotient approach (HQ). Moreover, the quantification of selected antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) was conducted for the first time in this matrix in this geographical location. Thirty-four pharmaceuticals were detected, being caffeine, 1,7-dimethylxanthine, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen, ciproflox...

Hydrogel bioreactor drives Feammox and synergistically removes composite pollutants: Performance optimization, microbial communities and functional genetic differences
Bioresour Technol. 2023 Aug 4:129604. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2023.129604. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMixed pollutant wastewater has been a difficult problem due to the high toxicity of water bodies and the difficulty of treatment. Rice husk biochar modified with nano-iron tetroxide (RBC-nFe3O4) by polyvinyl alcohol cross-linking internal doping was used to introduce iron-reducing bacteria Klebsiella sp. FC61 to construct a bioreactor. The results of the long-term operation of the bioreactor showed that the removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) and chemical oxygen demand best reached 90.18 and 98.49%, respecti...

A novel tungsten diselenide nanoparticles for enhanced photocatalytic performance of Cr (VI) reduction and ciprofloxacin (CIP)
Chemosphere. 2023 Aug 3:139701. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.139701. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNanoparticles (NPs) fabrication is a significant approach to enhance the visible light response of photocatalysts, to realize inexpensive and more harmful compound removal, at larger scale. The poor electrons and holes separation capability and low light activity of bulk materials can be notably enhanced through developing NPs. From photocatalytic investigation, better performance was received in the tungsten diselenide (WSe2) NPs than that in bare WSe2, exhibiting the action of restrained recombination of charge carriers ...

A novel electrochemical aptasensor based on eco-friendly synthesized titanium dioxide nanosheets and polyethyleneimine grafted reduced graphene oxide for ultrasensitive and selective detection of ciprofloxacin
Anal Chim Acta. 2023 Sep 22;1275:341607. doi: 10.1016/j.aca.2023.341607. Epub 2023 Jul 10.ABSTRACTDeveloping a rapid, sensitive, and efficient analytical method for the trace-level determination of highly concerning antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) is desirable to guarantee the safety of human health and ecosystems. In this work, a novel electrochemical aptasensor based on polyethyleneimine grafted reduced graphene oxide and titanium dioxide (rGO/PEI/TiO2) nanocomposite was constructed for ultrasensitive and selective detection of CIP. Through the in-situ electrochemical oxidation of Ti3C2Tx nanosheets, TiO2 nanosheets with ...

Safety of Antibiotic Irrigations for Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Rhinosinusitis in Patients with Identical Drug Allergies or Adverse Reactions: A Pilot Study
Conclusions: Currently, no prior study has examined whether adverse reactions to a systemic antibiotic also occur when the medication is delivered topically via sinonasal irrigations. Our findings suggest that topical administration of antibiotics may be a safe alternative for patients with adverse effects to the systemic form.PMID:37522348 | DOI:10.1177/01455613231189057
