Paying more attention to arterial hypertension, dyslipidaemia, women and the rural environment in our ongoing fight against cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors
CONCLUSION: In Senegal, we need to pay more attention to arterial hypertension, dyslipidaemia, women and the rural environment in our ongoing fight against cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors.PMID:37594257 | DOI:10.5830/CVJA-2023-033

Association between Non-Lipid Residual Risk Factors and Cardiovascular Events in Patients with Stable Coronary Artery Disease Treated with Pitavastatin: An Observation from the REAL-CAD Study
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with stable CAD treated with pitavastatin and who achieved guidelines-directed levels of LDL-C, eGFR and HbA1c were independently associated with adverse events, suggesting that renal function and glycemic control could be residual non-lipid therapeutic targets after statin therapy.PMID:37574272 | DOI:10.5551/jat.64304

Pharmacological interventions for asymptomatic carotid stenosis
CONCLUSIONS: Although there is no high-certainty evidence to support pharmacological intervention, this does not mean that pharmacological treatments are ineffective in preventing ischaemic cerebral events, morbidity, and mortality. High-quality RCTs are needed to better inform the best medical treatment that may reduce the burden of carotid stenosis. In the interim, clinicians will have to use other sources of information.PMID:37565307 | PMC:PMC10401652 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD013573.pub2

Bioinformatic platforms for clinical stratification of natural history of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases
Eur Heart J Cardiovasc Pharmacother. 2023 Aug 10:pvad059. doi: 10.1093/ehjcvp/pvad059. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlthough bioinformatic methods gained a lot of attention in the latest years, their use in real-world studies for primary and secondary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) is still lacking. Bioinformatic resources have been applied to thousands of individuals from the Framingham Heart Study as well as health care-associated biobanks such as the UK Biobank, the Million Veteran Program, and the CARDIoGRAMplusC4D Consortium and randomized controlled trials (i.e. ODYSSEY, FOURIER, ASPRE...

Low-Dose Colchicine for Secondary Prevention of Coronary Artery Disease: JACC Review Topic of the Week
J Am Coll Cardiol. 2023 Aug 15;82(7):648-660. doi: 10.1016/j.jacc.2023.05.055.ABSTRACTAmong statin-treated patients, inflammation assessed by means of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) is a more powerful determinant of cardiovascular death and all-cause mortality than low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Several therapies that target residual inflammatory risk significantly reduce vascular event rates. For coronary artery disease patients already taking guideline-directed medical care, including statins, low-dose colchicine (0.5 mg/d orally) has been shown to safely lower major adverse cardiovascular even...

Impact of age on characteristics, performance measures and outcomes of inpatients for heart failure in Beijing, China
ConclusionsHF patients aged ≥75 years had distinct clinical profiles, received worse in-hospital therapies and experienced higher in-hospital and 1 year mortality.

Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels are associated with subsequent stented-territory ischemic stroke after carotid artery stenting
Background and Aims: Uncontrolled low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is an important risk factor for carotid stenosis. However, the role of LDL-C after carotid artery stenting (CAS) is not well known with respect to stented-territory infarction (STI) and in-stent restenosis (ISR). We hypothesized that LDL-C levels after CAS might be independently associated with STI and ISR.

Elevated remnant cholesterol in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in diabetes: A population-based prospective cohort study
Background and Aims: Elevated remnant cholesterol is causally associated with increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in the general population. We tested the hypothesis that elevated remnant cholesterol is associated with increased risk of peripheral artery disease, myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and any ASCVD in individuals with diabetes.

Inflammation and dyslipidaemia as the additional risk for stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation
Background and Aims: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is often accompanied by complications, especially ischemic stroke. AF is associated with atrial structural changes that may have an inflammatory basis. Dyslipidemia is the basis for the development of atherosclerotic diseases, their role in the development of AF is not entirely clear, and previous studies suggest a "cholesterol paradox". The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between inflammation markers and dyslipidemia risk in patients with AF and stroke

Small dense LDL cholesterol and ischemic stroke
Background and Aims: For decades it has been suggested that small dense low-density lipoprotein (sdLDL) may be particularly atherogenic. High levels of sdLDL are associated with an increased risk of ischemic heart disease; however, the association of sdLDL with ischemic stroke has not been explored in a large prospective study on the general population. We tested the hypothesis that high sdLDL cholesterol levels are associated with an increased risk of ischemic stroke.
