Diabetic retinopathy predicts cardiovascular disease independently of subclinical atherosclerosis in individuals with type 2 diabetes: A prospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: DR is a strong predictor of cardiovascular events in T2D individuals at primary CVD prevention, even after accounting for the presence of preclinical carotid atherosclerosis. These results may help to individualize CVD prevention strategies in T2D.PMID:36407461 | PMC:PMC9668891 | DOI:10.3389/fcvm.2022.945421

Diffusion-weighted imaging-based radiomics for predicting 1-year ischemic stroke recurrence
CONCLUSION: DWI-based radiomics could help to predict 1-year ischemic stroke recurrence.PMID:36388230 | PMC:PMC9649925 | DOI:10.3389/fneur.2022.1012896

World Heart Federation Cholesterol Roadmap 2022
CONCLUSIONS: The adverse effects of LDL-cholesterol and apo B containing lipoprotein exposure are cumulative and result in ASCVD. These are preventable by implementation of different strategies, aimed at efficiently tackling atherosclerosis at different stages throughout the human life-course. Preventive strategies should therefore be updated to implement health policy, lifestyle changes and when needed pharmacotherapies earlier with investment in, and a shift in focus towards, early preventive strategies that preserve cardiovascular health rather than treat the consequences of ASCVD.PMID:36382159 | PMC:PMC9562775 | DOI:10.5334/gh.1154

Statins Reduce Bleeding Risk in Patients Taking Oral Anticoagulants for Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation: A Retrospective Registry Study
ConclusionsStatins significantly reduced the risk of major bleeding, all-cause mortality, and ischemic events in patients with NVAF taking OACs. Their additive benefits should be considered in routine practice and thus be further researched.

The Role of Inflammation in Cardiovascular Disease
Int J Mol Sci. 2022 Oct 26;23(21):12906. doi: 10.3390/ijms232112906.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease, in which the immune system has a prominent role in its development and progression. Inflammation-induced endothelial dysfunction results in an increased permeability to lipoproteins and their subendothelial accumulation, leukocyte recruitment, and platelets activation. Recruited monocytes differentiate into macrophages which develop pro- or anti-inflammatory properties according to their microenvironment. Atheroma progression or healing is determined by the balance between these functional phenotyp...

Hyperlipoproteinemia(a) and Severe Coronary Artery Lesion Types
Conclusion: Diffuse atherosclerosis and coronary calcinosis are associated with elevated Lp(a) levels, independent of other risk factors. The risk of MACE in the first year after surgery is significantly higher in patients with diffuse atherosclerosis and coronary calcinosis, which should be considered when prescribing postoperative treatment for such patients.PMID:36359368 | DOI:10.3390/biomedicines10112848

Bending the Cardiovascular Event Curve by Evaluating the Potential Impact of Achieving Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Goal Across a Large Health System Among Secondary Prevention Patients
Guidelines recommend aggressive low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) lowering in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). However, the recommended threshold of LDL-C ≤70 mg/dL is often not achieved. We used data from the Duke University Health System electronic health record to characterize patterns of lipid levels and lipid management in patients with ASCVD to estimate the number of clinical events that could be prevented by achieving LDL-C ≤70 mg/dL . A mu ltivariable logistic regression model was developed to predict the 1-year composite of all-cause mortality, myocardial infarction, stro...

Pharmacogenomics in Stroke and Cardiovascular Disease: State of the Art
Stroke. 2022 Nov 3. doi: 10.1161/STROKEAHA.122.037717. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere is considerable interindividual variability in the response to antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapies, and this variation may be attributable to genetic variants. There has been an increased understanding of the genetic architecture of stroke and cardiovascular disease, which has been driven by advancements in genomic technologies and this has raised the possibility of more targeted pharmaceutical treatments. Pharmacogenetics promises to use a patient's genetic profile to treat those who are more likely to benefit from a particular...

Annexins and cardiovascular diseases: Beyond membrane trafficking and repair
Front Cell Dev Biol. 2022 Oct 14;10:1000760. doi: 10.3389/fcell.2022.1000760. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTCardiovascular diseases (CVD) remain the leading cause of mortality worldwide. The main cause underlying CVD is associated with the pathological remodeling of the vascular wall, involving several cell types, including endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells, and leukocytes. Vascular remodeling is often related with the development of atherosclerotic plaques leading to narrowing of the arteries and reduced blood flow. Atherosclerosis is known to be triggered by high blood cholesterol levels, which in the presence o...
