Combination Moderate-Intensity Statin  and Ezetimibe Therapy for Elderly Patients With Atherosclerosis
CONCLUSIONS: Moderate-intensity statin with ezetimibe combination therapy showed similar cardiovascular benefits to those of high-intensity statin monotherapy with lower intolerance-related drug discontinuation or dose reduction in elderly patients with ASCVD having a higher risk of intolerance, nonadherence, and discontinuation with high-intensity statin therapy. (RAndomized Comparison of Efficacy and Safety of Lipid-lowerING With Statin Monotherapy Versus Statin/Ezetimibe Combination for High-risk Cardiovascular Diseases [RACING Trial]; NCT03044665).PMID:37019580 | DOI:10.1016/j.jacc.2023.02.007

Periodontitis is associated with subclinical cerebral and carotid atherosclerosis in hypertensive patients: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: Periodontitis is associated with subclinical atherosclerosis in both intracranial and carotid arteries in elderly subjects with hypertension.CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The association of periodontitis with intracranial atherosclerosis implies that periodontitis patients might have greater chances to develop ischemic stroke in the future.PMID:37004529 | DOI:10.1007/s00784-023-04958-8

Clinical significance of CT angiographic assessment of collateral circulation combined with serum NLRP1 levels in ischemic stroke patients
This study showed that the serum NLRP1 levels were remarkably decreased in ischemic stroke patients. In addition, the serum NLRP1 levels and ASITN/SIR grade could predict the prognosis of ischemic stroke patients.PMID:37000063 | DOI:10.1097/MD.0000000000033433

ATP-binding cassette G1 membrane transporter-mediated cholesterol efflux capacity influences coronary atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk in Rheumatoid Arthritis
CONCLUSION: ABCG1-CEC inversely associated with plaque burden and vulnerability, and plaque progression conditionally on cumulative inflammation and corticosteroid dose. ABCG1-CEC inversely associated with events specifically in patients with noncalcified plaques, lower inflammation and in prednisone users.PMID:36996698 | DOI:10.1016/j.jaut.2023.103029

Association of non-HDL-C-to-HDL-C ratio with coronary lesions and its prognostic performance in first-onset NSTEMI
Conclusion: NON-HDL-C:HDL-C is associated with coronary lesions and prognosis in non-ST-segment elevation acute myocardial infarction.PMID:36994674 | DOI:10.2217/bmm-2022-0548

Effect of PCSK9 inhibition in combination with statin therapy on intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis: A high-resolution MRI study
This study aimed to determine the effects of PCSK9i on intracranial plaques in moderate-intensity statin-treated individuals with ICAS.METHODS: This prospective, observational study monitored the imaging and clinical outcomes of individuals with ICAS who were consecutively treated with moderate-intensity statins with or without PCSK9i. Individuals underwent monthly visits and repeat high-resolution MRI (HR-MRI) at week 12. The primary outcome was a change in HR-MRI after 12 weeks of treatment and the secondary outcome was major vascular events during follow-up.RESULTS: Forty-nine individuals were studied (PCSK9i group: 26 ...

Association of remnant cholesterol with risk of cardiovascular disease events, stroke, and mortality: A systemic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Elevated RC is associated with an increased risk of CVD, stroke, and mortality. In addition to the traditional cardiovascular risk factors, such as total cholesterol and LDL-C, clinicians should also pay attention to RC in clinics.PMID:36966562 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2023.03.012

Differential association between apolipoprotein B and LDL cholesterol and cerebral atherosclerosis according to pre-stroke statin use
CONCLUSIONS: ApoB was consistently associated with ICAS, particularly symptomatic stenosis, in both statin-naïve and statin-treated patients. The close association between ApoB levels and residual risk in statin-treated patients could be partially explained by these results.PMID:36966561 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2023.03.014

Role of sirtuins in attenuating plaque vulnerability in atherosclerosis
Mol Cell Biochem. 2023 Mar 23. doi: 10.1007/s11010-023-04714-2. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis is characterized by the development of intimal plaque, thrombosis, and stenosis of the vessel lumen causing decreased blood flow and hypoxia precipitating angina. Chronic inflammation in the stable plaque renders it unstable and rupture of unstable plaques results in the formation of emboli leading to hypoxia/ischemia to the organs by occluding the terminal branches and precipitate myocardial infarction and stroke. Such delibitating events could be controlled by the strategies that prevent plaque development or pla...

Association of remnant cholesterol with risk of cardiovascular disease events, stroke, and mortality: A systemic review and meta-analysis
Lipid disorders are associated with the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Remnant cholesterol (RC), a non-traditional previously neglected risk factor for CVD, has received much attention in recent years. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association of RC with the risks of CVD, stroke, and mortality.

Differential association between apolipoprotein B and LDL cholesterol and cerebral atherosclerosis according to pre-stroke statin use
To reduce cardiovascular risk, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is the primary target of statin treatment, while apolipoprotein B (ApoB) is secondary. We investigated the association between atherosclerotic stenosis and LDL-C or ApoB levels and whether a difference in association exists according to pre-admission statin use in ischemic stroke patients.

Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes of Chinese Patients with Premature Acute Coronary Syndrome
This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) of Chinese patients with premature acute coronary syndrome (ACS) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). This study was a secondary retrospective analysis involving 2114 ACS patients undergoing PCI at a single center in China. The patients were divided into two groups according to age (premature ACS group: ≤ 55 years in men, ≤ 65 years in women; nonpremature ACS group: > 55 years in men, > 65 years in women). The primary endpoint was all-cause death, and the secondary endpoint was a composite ...
