Lipid profiles and atrial fibrillation in ischemic stroke patients treated with thrombectomy: experience from a tertiary Italian stroke hospital
CONCLUSION: Total cholesterol and all cholesterol-related measures were significantly lower in patients undergoing thrombectomy than in other stroke patients. Conversely, we found that AF was significantly high in patients with EVT, suggesting that hypercholesterolemia could be mainly linked to small-vessel occlusion stroke while large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke could show different causes. AIS patients may have different pathogenesis and their understanding may improve enhance the discovery of specific and tailored preventive treatments.PMID:37221691 | DOI:10.2174/1871525721666230522124351

Flow-induced  reprogramming of endothelial cells in atherosclerosis
Nat Rev Cardiol. 2023 May 24:1-16. doi: 10.1038/s41569-023-00883-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtherosclerotic diseases such as myocardial infarction, ischaemic stroke and peripheral artery disease continue to be leading causes of death worldwide despite the success of treatments with cholesterol-lowering drugs and drug-eluting stents, raising the need to identify additional therapeutic targets. Interestingly, atherosclerosis preferentially develops in curved and branching arterial regions, where endothelial cells are exposed to disturbed blood flow with characteristic low-magnitude oscillatory shear stress. By contrast...

Dual elevated remnant cholesterol and C-reactive protein in myocardial infarction, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and mortality
CONCLUSIONS: Dual elevated remnant cholesterol and C-reactive protein confers the highest risk of myocardial infarction, ASCVD, and all-cause mortality, that is, compared to either of these two factors individually.PMID:37217436 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2023.05.010

Deficiency of germinal center kinase TRAF2 and NCK-interacting kinase (TNIK) in B cells does not affect atherosclerosis
CONCLUSION: We here conclude that in hyperlipidemic ApoE-/- mice, B cell specific TNIK deficiency does not affect atherosclerosis.PMID:37215541 | PMC:PMC10196212 | DOI:10.3389/fcvm.2023.1171764

Evolving concepts in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis: from endothelial dysfunction to thrombus formation through multiple shades of inflammation
J Cardiovasc Med (Hagerstown). 2023 May 1;24(Suppl 2):e156-e167. doi: 10.2459/JCM.0000000000001450.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis is the anatomo-pathological substrate of most cardio, cerebro and vascular diseases such as acute and chronic coronary syndromes, stroke and peripheral artery diseases. The pathophysiology of atherosclerotic plaque and its complications are under continuous investigation. In the last 2 decades our understanding on the formation, progression and complication of the atherosclerotic lesion has greatly improved and the role of immunity and inflammation is now well documented and accepted. The conventional ...

Impact of High-Intensity Statin on Early Neurologic Deterioration in Patients with Single Small Subcortical Infarction
CONCLUSIONS: We identified an association between the intensity of early statin therapy and END in patients with SSSI. Early administration of high-intensity statin (≤24 h) is associated with a reduced incidence of END in patients with SSSI.PMID:37176701 | PMC:PMC10179331 | DOI:10.3390/jcm12093260

Efficacy and safety of the use of alirocumab in real clinical practice
CONCLUSION: The inclusion of alirocumab in the treatment regimen contributed to the stable course of atherosclerosis-associated diseases, the achievement of LDL cholesterol targets in 77.8% of patients, was not accompanied by side effects during 2.5 years therapy.PMID:37167185 | DOI:10.26442/00403660.2022.12.201991

Evaluation of anti-atherosclerotic effects of Sitagliptin via modulation of the mTOR pathway in male rabbits
This study aimed to investigate the effect of Sitagliptin on the progression of atherosclerosis. Twenty-one male New Zealand White rabbits weighing 2-2.5 kg each were split into three groups: normal control, atherogenic control, and Sitagliptin-treated. The following parameters: serum triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), LDL, and a tissue autophagy marker (p62) using ELISA, aortic mRNA expression of mTORC1 marker using Real-Time Quantitative PCR(RT-qPCR), and histological inspection of the aorta were assessed. The mRNA expression of mTORC1 and the lipid profile of aortic tissue are considerably elevated in atherogen...

Comparing ultrasonographically assessed carotid and abdominal aorta plaques in cardiovascular disease risk estimation
CONCLUSIONS: Both carotid and abdominal aorta plaques are significant risk factors for CV events, but only carotid plaques provide prognostic information beyond traditional CV risk factors on fatal CV events. If one ultrasound parameter for plaque detection and CV risk estimation had to be chosen, carotid plaques may be preferred over abdominal aorta.PMID:37161438 | DOI:10.1186/s12872-023-03264-1

Predicting Statin Adherence Following Hospital Discharge for Acute Coronary Syndromes: What ’s the Score?
The use of statins following acute coronary syndromes (ACS) is well documented to improve mortality and reduce hospitalisation, revascularisation and risk of stroke [1], and has become a frequently used benchmark to audit in-hospital care of such patients. Much less is known about adherence to statins following discharge —and the factors influencing this—which is the subject of the paper by Liao et al. in this edition of Heart, Lung and Circulation [2].
