Mitral valve surgery with or without coronary bypass grafting: eight-year cohort study.
CONCLUSION: MVR+CABG compared to MVR patients had more comorbidities and greater operative risk, and were independently associated with higher operative mortality and composite morbidity, but not independently associated with higher long-term mortality. PMID: 31415499 [PubMed - in process]

Long-Term Single Centre Outcomes of Patients with Chronic Renal Dialysis Undergoing Cardiac Surgery
CONCLUSIONSCardiac surgery in DD-CRF patients is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Interestingly, overall mortality was mainly none cardiac-related, where elderly patients or those presented with CHF had the worst life expectancy. However, subsequent kidney transplantation positively impact long-term survival in such patients.

Long-Term Single Centre Outcomes of Patients with Chronic Renal Dialysis Undergoing Cardiac Surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac surgery in DD-CRF patients is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Coronary angiography in the setting of acute infective endocarditis requiring surgical treatment.
CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative coronary angiography in patients affected by infective endocarditis provides relevant information in a significant proportion of patients and can be performed safely. PMID: 31734140 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

A Multi Center Experience: Is Valve Replacement Safe for Patients with Hugely Dilated Left Ventricle?
CONCLUSION: Valve replacement in patients with hugely dilated left ventricle are safe operations with satisfactory outcomes even if combined with other procedures, especially with proper preoperative preparation, intraoperative preservation of posterior mitral leaflet, and meticulous postoperative follow up in the surgical ICU. Coronary artery bypass grafting vs. drug-eluting stent implantation in patients with end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis.
Conclusions: Among patients with CAD and dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease (CKD), treatment with CABG or PCI with DES exhibited similar long-term outcomes. However, CABG was associated with higher short-term risk of death. Higher mortality was revealed in patients over 65 years and underwent PD. PMID: 31918608 [PubMed - in process]

Association of Postoperative Complications and Outcomes Following Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting
ConclusionsPostoperative complications are associated with an increased risk of both early and late mortality and all-cause rehospitalization, particularly during the “value” window within 90 days of CABG. These findings underscore the need to develop avoidance strategies as well as cost-adjustment methods for each of these complications.

Effects and outcomes of cardiac surgery in patients with cardiometabolic syndrome
ConclusionsPatients with CMS were more likely to present with increased comorbidities. Patients with CMS undergoing CABG were at risk for worse short ‐term secondary postoperative outcomes and reduced long‐term survival. The data supports the need for further investigation for risk reduction surrounding operative revascularization.

Microplegia vs. 4:1 Blood Cardioplegia: Effectiveness and Cost Savings in Complex Cardiac Operations.
CONCLUSIONS: Our simplified microplegia technique offers several advantages over Buckberg cardioplegia without compromising myocardial protection or safety in complex, multi-component operations with extended aortic clamp times. PMID: 32160958 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clinical outcomes of PCI with rotational atherectomy: the European multicentre Euro4C registry.
CONCLUSIONS: Despite the high level of complexity of the studied population, RA turned out to be an effective procedure with a low rate of in-hospital complications and demonstrated good immediate and mid-term results. PMID: 32250249 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Mitral Valve Surgery for Papillary Muscle Rupture: Outcomes in 1,342 Patients from the STS Database.
CONCLUSIONS: These data provide a national overview of outcomes following MVS for PMR. Rates of mortality and morbidity are high but the majority of patients survive operative intervention in this high-risk and otherwise lethal condition. PMID: 32376352 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Benchmarking Outcomes: Reoperation for Aortic Valve Patient Prosthesis Mismatch.
CONCLUSIONS: Reoperative surgery for PPM is complex but may be performed with good outcomes and low mortality in experienced centers. These data provide excellent clinical and hemodynamic benchmarks for the treatment of PPM in the current era of valve-in-valve TAVR. PMID: 32980325 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Low vitamin D levels affect left ventricular wall thickness in severe aortic stenosis
Conclusion Among patients with severe degenerative aortic stenosis, vitamin D deficiency is common. We found a significant association between left ventricular wall thickness and vitamin D levels, suggesting a potential role of this hormone in modulating hypertrophic remodelling in these patients. However, future larger studies are certainly needed to confirm our findings and to define their prognostic implications.

Hyponatremia: an overlooked risk factor associated with adverse outcomes after cardiac surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative hyponatremia is relatively common and is associated with adverse short- and long-term outcomes after cardiac surgery. Preoperative hyponatremia can be used independently from standard risk factors to identify high risk patients for cardiac surgery. PMID: 33080237 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Robot-assisted coronary artery bypass surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis of comparative studies.
CONCLUSION: Although the findings from this review of comparative studies of RCAB appear promising and suggest that RCAB may offer some benefits to patients, in the absence of randomized controlled trials, these results should be interpreted cautiously. PMID: 33155975 [PubMed - in process]
