COVID-19 Business Updates Provide Some Clarity
The unknowns still outnumber the knowns, but recent business updates provide some clarity around how the medical device industry is fairing during the COVID-19 pandemic. First and foremost, it is clear that companies are hurting in the areas of elective procedures, which are being deferred. But there may be some silver linings hidden amongst the bad news. Needham & Co. medtech analyst Mike Matson estimates that medical device sales across the industry will continue to drop by an average of 40% to 50% until the economy begins to reopen and hospitals start to resume elective procedures. Matson's e...

Characteristic and prognosis of acute large vessel occlusion in anterior and posterior circulation after endovascular treatment: the ANGEL registry real world experience
AbstractThere were limited studies comparing the anterior (AC) and posterior (PC) circulation acute ischemic strokes (AIS). Our study aimed to evaluate distinct features of AC and PC strokes regarding clinical, vascular risk, pathogenesis and outcome factors after endovascular procedures. This multicenter prospective study registered 873 patients with acute large occlusion of anterior circulation stroke (ACS) and posterior circulation stroke (PCS). Patients who underwent endovascular procedures were included in this study. The differences in ACS and PCS regarding baseline characteristics, post-operative intracranial hemorr...

Device profile of different paclitaxel-coated balloons: Neuro Elutax SV, Elutax "3" Neuro and SeQuent Please NEO for the treatment of symptomatic intracranial high-grade stenosis: overview of their feasibility and safety.
Authors: Gruber P, Remonda L Abstract Introduction: Intracranial atherosclerotic disease (ICAD) is highly prevalent and probably the most common cause of stroke worldwide. Despite best medical treatment (BMT), the rate of recurrent stroke in symptomatic ICAD patients is elevated, especially in those with high-grade stenosis. Thus, alternative treatment options are needed. So far, endovascular ICAD treatment has been considered a second-line therapy. However, recent progress in the endovascular acute stroke treatment challenges this issue. Drug-coated balloon (DCB) - percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) repre...

12 Innovations That Will Change Health Care and Medicine in the 2020s
Pocket-size ultrasound devices that cost 50 times less than the machines in hospitals (and connect to your phone). Virtual reality that speeds healing in rehab. Artificial intelligence that’s better than medical experts at spotting lung tumors. These are just some of the innovations now transforming medicine at a remarkable pace. No one can predict the future, but it can at least be glimpsed in the dozen inventions and concepts below. Like the people behind them, they stand at the vanguard of health care. Neither exhaustive nor exclusive, the list is, rather, representative of the recasting of public health and medic...

Intracranial mechanical thrombectomy without extracranial revascularization for a tandem occlusion with robust Circle of Willis: case report
Publication date: Available online 4 October 2019Source: Interdisciplinary NeurosurgeryAuthor(s): Mateja de Leonni Stanonik, Christopher Sy, Cameron McDougall, Lee Birnbaum, Justin MascitelliAbstractA 59-year-old male presented with a severe left middle cerebral artery (MCA) syndrome, a National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) of 17, and was last known well 26 hours prior. Computed tomography angiography (CTA) of the head demonstrated a tandem extracranial ICA and intracranial ICA/MCA occlusion. Computed tomography perfusion (CTP) demonstrated a large mismatch. The patient underwent a mechanical thrombectomy usin...

Distal Balloon Angioplasty of Cerebral Vasospasm Decreases the Risk of Delayed Cerebral Infarction INTERVENTIONAL
CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that distal balloon angioplasty is safe and decreases the risk of delayed cerebral infarction and the recurrence of vasospasm compared with conventional angioplasty. It fails to show a clinical benefit possibly because of confounding changes in adjuvant therapies of vasospasm during the study period.

Developing Of A New Animal Artery Model Of Atherothrombotic Stenosis Using Radiofrequency Thermal Balloon Angioplasty- Mediated Endothelial Injury: Monitored By Color Doppler Ultrasonography And Histopathology
Background and Aims: A plaque may rupture with high risk of subsequent thrombus- mediated acute clinical events such as myocardial infarction and stroke. The aim of this study was to generate a reproducible experimental hamster abdominal aorta model of atherothrombotic stenosis with morphological similarities to the human disease.

Long-term Outcome of Angioplasty Using a  Wingspan Stent, Post-Stent Balloon Dilation and Aggressive Restenosis Management for Intracranial Arterial Stenosis
ConclusionThe postprocedural stroke rate was similar to that observed in the SAMMPRIS study. Symptomatic restenosis may be reduced by poststent dilation, close angiographic follow-up, and retreatment.

Use of stent retriever for treatment of iatrogenic intracranial vasospasm.
We present a case report of a patient who underwent a mechanical thrombectomy for stroke and suffered from vasospasm. This severe flow-limiting vasospasm was successfully treated with the Trevo stent device. Although stent retrievers have become more widespread for thrombectomy, vasospasm treatment has not been often described in the literature. Further study is needed to determine if this is a viable technique for treating resistant vasospasm. PMID: 31088245 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
