Perioperative stroke in patients undergoing elective spinal surgery: a retrospective analysis using the Japanese diagnosis procedure combination database
Conclusions: Perioperative stroke occurred in 0.22 % of patients undergoing spinal surgery. Resection of a spinal cord tumor was associated with increased risk of perioperative stroke as well as advanced age, comorbidities at admission, cervical spine surgery, surgery in a teaching hospital, and length of stay.

IJERPH, Vol. 20, Pages 3849: Association between Anemia Severity and Ischemic Stroke Incidence: A Retrospective Cohort Study
i Chien Stroke patients presenting with anemia at the time of stroke onset had a higher risk of mortality and development of other cardiovascular diseases and comorbidities. The association between the severity of anemia and the risk of developing a stroke is still uncertain. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the association between stroke incidence and anemia severity (by WHO criteria). A total of 71,787 patients were included, of whom 16,708 (23.27%) were identified as anemic and 55,079 patients were anemia-free. Female patients (62.98%) were more likely to have anemia than males (37.02%). The likelihood of ...

The role of hydroxyurea to prevent silent stroke in sickle cell disease: Systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusion: Our findings suggest that hydroxyurea is safe and may prevent silent stroke and stroke in sickle cell disease. More high-quality studies including RCTs are needed.

Frequency of and Determinants of Stroke After Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement in Patients With Previous Cardiac Surgery (from the Multicenter RECORD Initiative)
In conclusion, the risk of postoperative stroke after S-AVR in patients with previous cardiac surgery is high and has an impact on the immediate and late mortality. Excessive bleeding requiring blood transfusion and/or reexploration, prolonged cardiopulmonary bypass time, and use of intra-aortic balloon pump were associated with an extremely high rate of stroke.

Gastrointestinal Bleeding in Acute Ischemic Stroke: Recent Trends from the Fukuoka Stroke Registry
Background: Gastrointestinal (GI) hemorrhage is a potentially serious complication of acute stroke, but its incidence appears to be decreasing. The aim of this study was to elucidate the etiology of GI bleeding and its impact on clinical outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke in recent years. Methods: Using the database of the Fukuoka Stroke Registry, 6,529 patients with acute ischemic stroke registered between June 2007 and December 2012 were included in this study. We recorded clinical data including any previous history of peptic ulcer, prestroke drug history including the use of antiplatelets, anticoagulants, ...

The Role of Hydroxyurea to Prevent Silent Stroke in Sickle Cell Disease: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Chronic blood transfusions are standard of care for stroke prevention in sickle cell disease. We evaluated hydroxyurea's efficacy in preventing silent stroke. We searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies on Pubmed, CENTRAL, Embase, and Web of Science without using language/time limits. Eligible studies compared hydroxyurea with transfusions or observation to prevent silent stroke. This systematic review adheres to the Cochrane guidelines. Data were pooled using random effects model using STATA to perform meta-analysis. Methodological quality of RCTs was investigated using the Cochrane risk ...

The association between obstructive sleep apnea and stroke in sickle-cell disease children
ConclusionPatients who had OSA had a higher prevalence of stroke compared to non-OSA patients by 16% with almost three times higher odds. The difference was statistically significant in bivariant but not multivariant analysis. The rate of hospitalization, emergency visit, and blood transfusion were not affected by OSA status. Screening for OSA in high-risk patients such as SCD children and early management could prevent the risk of SCD complications.

Muscle haematoma due to antithrombotic treatment for ischaemic stroke
Publication date: July 2015 Source:Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, Volume 22, Issue 7 Author(s): Akiyuki Hiraga , Yoko Nakagawa , Ikuo Kamitsukasa , Takeshi Suzuki , Satoshi Kuwabara The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence and clinical features of muscle haematoma in ischaemic stroke patients. Muscle haematomas are rare complications that occur during antithrombotic treatment for acute ischaemic stroke. Clinical and laboratory records of ischaemic stroke patients with muscle haematomas in the last 3.5years were retrospectively reviewed. Muscular haematoma developed in three of 694 (0.4%) consecutive pat...

Pain and other non‐neurological adverse events in children with sickle cell anemia and previous stroke who received hydroxyurea and phlebotomy or chronic transfusions and chelation: Results from the SWiTCH clinical trial
Conclusions: In children with SCA and prior stroke, monthly transfusions and daily iron chelation provided superior protection against acute vaso‐occlusive pain SAEs when compared to hydroxyurea and monthly phlebotomy.

Effective evaluation of arterial pulse waveform analysis by two-dimensional stroke volume variation –stroke volume index plots
In this study, we analyzed how we visually interpret hemodynamic data, including stroke volume variation (SVV) and stroke volume (SV) derived from APWA. We performed arithmetic estimation of the SVV –SV relationship and applied measured values to this estimation. We then collected measured values in six anesthesia cases, including three liver transplantations and three other types of surgeries, to apply them to this SVV–SVI (stroke volume variation index) plot. Arithmetic analysis showed th at the relationship between SVV and SV can be drawn as hyperbolic curves. Plotting SVV-SV values in the semi-logarithmic scale sho...

Incidence of perioperative stroke in clampless aortic anastomosis during off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting
This study aimed to assess if clampless off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB) decreases the incidence of perioperative stroke (POS) rate and in-hospital mortality. The secondary aim was to evaluate 12-year rates of overall mortality. Between January 2003 to December 2015, data of 645 consecutive patients undergoing isolated CABG were retrospectively collected. 363 underwent aortic no-touch OPCAB (No-touch group) and 282 underwent OPCAB with the Heartstring device (HS group). In-hospital mortality and perioperative stroke rate as primary endpoint, as well as long-term follow-up outcome were analysed. In-hospital ...

Dilemma in approach to stroke in sickle cell disease patient: A case report
Conclusion: Recommendations need to be put in place regarding screening for PFO in patients with SCD, in addition to highlighting issues of whether screening needs to be done in patients who have not developed stroke, and if PFO were to be found, what would be the best management approach and how will prognosis be affected.
