Stroke after cardiac catheterization in children
Children with cardiac disease are at high risk for stroke. Approximately one-quarter of strokes in children with cardiac disease occur in the peri-procedural period; yet, risk factors, clinical presentation, and treatment of post-catheterization stroke in children have not been well-defined.

A Case of Giant Cell Arteritis Presenting As Catastrophic Posterior Circulation Stroke: A Diagnostic Dilemma
We describe a case of a 75-year-old woman who presented with jaw claudication and temporal headache. A colour duplex ultrasonography and later biopsy of the temporal arteries confirmed GCA and she was commenced on oral steroids. She was subsequently readmitted with a new worsening vision of both eyes and confusion. Her brain images revealed acute bilateral vertebral artery thrombus with haemorrhagic transformation. She was loaded on intravenous steroids. The next day she developed vomiting, bilateral visual loss and a cardiac arrest from ventricular fibrillation. Following the return of spontaneous circulation, she was tak...

Short-term risk of periprocedural stroke relative to radial vs. femoral access: systematic review, meta-analysis, study sequential analysis and meta-regression of 2,188,047 real-world cardiac catheterizations
CONCLUSION: Periprocedural stroke remains a rare and hard-to-predict adverse event associated with cardiac catheterization. TRA is associated with a 20 to 30% lower risk of PS in real-world/common practice settings. Future studies are unlikely to change our conclusion.PMID:36877129 | DOI:10.1080/14779072.2023.2187378

The Impact of Right Ventricular Stroke Work on B‐Type Natriuretic Peptide Levels in Patients With Mitral Stenosis Undergoing Percutaneous Mitral Valvuloplasty
ConclusionsElevated baseline BNP level in MS patients was independently associated with CI and RVSWI. Plasma BNP levels were reduced after successful PMV, which was associated with the reduction of the LA pressure.

Right ventricular stroke work in children with pulmonary arterial hypertension: a promising approach
To the Editor, We read with great interest the article by Di Maria et al,1 describing the importance of RV performance, especially RV stroke work (RVSW), in children with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). The authors investigated the relation between echocardiographic measurements of RV function and the ‘gold standard’ of right heart catheterisation in children and found that RVSW strongly correlates with non-invasive data of RV function.1 The authors concluded that RVSW correlates with outcome parameters, for example, abnormal WHO class, and mortality, in children with PAH. We completely agree with the fi...

Stroke Volume Adjusted to Afterload for Assessment of Cardiac Performance in Patients with Severe Aortic Stenosis and Preserved Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between valvular resistance and stroke volume (SV) and to assess SV adequacy to afterload in patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS) and normal left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Methods: We assessed clinical characteristics and echocardiographic parameters in 44 patients with isolated severe AS and preserved LVEF. LV end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP) and LV mean diastolic pressure (LVMDP) were measured by cardiac catheterization. SV values were plotted in relation to valvular resistance. Patients were divided into 2 groups, with an SV that was highe...

Regional contribution to ventricular stroke volume is affected on the left side, but not on the right in patients with pulmonary hypertension
Abstract To develop more sensitive measures of impaired cardiac function in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH), since detection of impaired right ventricular (RV) function is important in these patients. With the hypothesis that a change in septal function in patients with PH is associated with altered longitudinal and lateral function of both ventricles, as a compensatory mechanism, we quantified the contributions of these parameters to stroke volume (SV) in both ventricles using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). Seventeen patients (10 females) evaluated for PH underwent right heart catheterization (RHC) a...

Papillary fibroelastoma of the aortic valve presenting with chronic angina and acute stroke: a case report
ConclusionsTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report describing a patient with a cardiac papillary fibroelastoma who presented with both chronic angina and acute stroke.

Comparisons of Noninvasive Methods Used to Assess Exercise Stroke Volume in Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction
Conclusions: Constituting a clinically impactful step towards construct validation testing, these data suggest SVACET, SVECHO, and O2pulse demonstrate moderate-to-strong concurrent validity for measuring/predicting exercise SV in HFpEF.

Gates Vascular Institute okayed for 'revolutionary' stroke upgrade
Buffalo General Medical Center has received state approvals to add 4-D imaging equipment adjacent to its emergency department, a move it says will “revolutionize” stroke treatment. The hospital filed plans this summer to invest $2.5 million in a 4-Dimensional Computed Tomography system from Canon Medical USA, creating a cardiac catheterization lab suite within Buff Gen’s Gates Vascular Institute emergency department. The state Departme nt of Health approved the project Oct. 10.  The equipment…

Contemporary Trends in Stroke Complicating Cardiac Catheterisation
Background: Stroke remains an important complication of diagnostic cardiac catheterization and percutaneous coronary intervention and is associated with high rates of in-hospital mortality.

Effect of Supervised Training Therapy on Pulmonary Arterial Compliance and Stroke Volume in Severe Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension and Inoperable or Persistent Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that supervised exercise training may improve right ventricular function and PAC at the same time. Further prospective studies are needed to evaluate these findings.Respiration

A 28-year-old male with spontaneous coronary artery dissection complicated by apical thrombus and acute ischemic stroke: An interesting case
Radiol Case Rep. 2022 Nov 2;18(1):246-249. doi: 10.1016/j.radcr.2022.10.001. eCollection 2023 Jan.ABSTRACTSpontaneous coronary artery dissection is described as the intramural bleeding that separates the layers of an epicardial coronary artery wall, either with or without an intimal tear. Atherosclerosis, iatrogenic damage, or trauma are not linked to this syndrome. Here we present a 28-year-old male with 1 month history stroke but no any chronic disease as well family history of heart disease who presented with 2 days' duration of typical cardiac chest pain. Based on an emergency electrocardiogram that showed biphasic T-w...

Echocardiographic pressure –strain loop‐derived stroke work of the right ventricle: validation against the gold standard
ConclusionsIntegrated echo measurement of pressure –strain loop-derived SW correlates with PV loop-based assessment of RV SW. Wasted work correlates with invasive measures of load-independent RV function. Given the methodological and anatomical challenges of RV work assessment, evolution of this approach by incorporating more elaborated echo analy sis data and an RV reference curve might improve its reliability to mirror invasively assessed RV SW.
