Pulsatile haemodynamic parameters are predictors of survival in paediatric pulmonary arterial hypertension
Conclusions: The parameters of both the pulsatile and static pulmonary circulations are strong independent predictors for transplant-free survival, and therefore can be of complementary value in assessing disease severity, predicting survival and guiding treatment in paediatric PAH.

Significance of the learning curve in left atrial appendage occlusion with two different devices
Conclusions: Complications associated with LAA occlusion cluster early in the periprocedural period and significantly decrease in frequency with operator experience. Initial experience gained with one of device may improve outcome with use of alternative LAA occlusion devices. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Early safety of the Amplatzer Cardiac Plug™ for left atrial appendage occlusion
Conclusions: In this single operator report, LAA occlusion using the double element ACP™ can be safely performed with excellent success rates. Using very specific deployment success, stability and release criteria, this device can achieve LAA occlusion with extremely low complication rates in an extremely frail oral anticoagulant ineligible population with multiple co-morbidities.

Progressive endothelial damage revealed by multilevel von Willebrand factor plasma concentrations in atrial fibrillation patients
Conclusion Regardless of the clinical form of the arrhythmia, AF patients presented significantly higher plasma concentrations of vWF compared with sinus rhythm controls. Multilevel vWF plasma concentration assessment suggests an association between the clinical evolution of AF and the progression of endothelial dysfunction. Further studies will have to establish the exact mechanisms that link endothelial dysfunction and stroke in the context of AF.

Successful closure of residual leak following lariat procedure in a patient with high risk of stroke and hemorrhage
Percutaneous left atrial appendage suture ligation with the LARIAT® device (Sentre HEART, Redwood City, CA) was successfully performed on an 84‐year‐old woman with non‐valvular atrial fibrillation who developed intracranial hemorrhage on warfarin. However, a large gap developed at follow‐up precluding warfarin cessation. To the best of our knowledge, this case report represents the first description of the use of a Gore® Helex® Septal Occluder (W. L. Gore and Associates, Newark, Delaware) as a novel approach to close a gap following percutaneous LAA suture ligation. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

"Cardiovascular diseases should be higher on the political agenda" said Tonio Borg, the EU commissioner for health.
Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer in the EU, but it is not yet given enough importance on the political agenda, according to Tonio Borg, who has scheduled an EU summit on chronic diseases at the beginning of next year.He spoke at the launch of the Cardiovascular Health Week, an initiative by the MEP Heart Group. Clinical outcomes of patients with low-flow, low-gradient, severe aortic stenosis and either preserved or reduced ejection fraction undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation
Conclusion TAVI in PLF-LG or LEF-LG patients is associated with overall mortality rates comparable with HGAS patients and all groups profit symptomatically to a similar extent.

Diagnostic Accuracy of Transesophageal Echocardiogram for the Detection of Patent Foramen Ovale: A Meta‐Analysis
ConclusionWhile TEE bubble study is considered to be the gold standard modality for diagnosing PFO, some PFOs may still be missed or misdiagnosed. It is important to understand the limitations of TEE and perhaps use other highly sensitive screening tests, such as transcranial doppler (TCD), in conjunction with TEE before scheduling a patient for transcatheter PFO closure.

Prognostic relevance of pulmonary arterial compliance in patients with chronic heart failure.
CONCLUSIONS Pulmonary arterial compliance is a strong prognostic indicator in CHF patients with sLVD; most importantly, its prognostic role is retained in patients with normal pulmonary vascular resistance. PMID: 24356904 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Feasibility and efficacy of the 2.5L and 3.8L Impella percutaneous left ventricular support device during high‐risk, percutaneous coronary intervention in patients with severe aortic stenosis
Conclusion: Implantation of the 2.5 and 3.8L Impella appears feasible in patients with severe AS and LV impairment. A balloon‐assist technique may be used to facilitate device implantation when initial unassisted attempts fail. Improved hemodynamic stability may enhance the tolerability of lengthy and complex procedures. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
