Acute Stroke Care during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Reduction in the Number of Admissions of Elderly Patients and Increase in Prehospital Delays
Conclusion: We observed a reduction in the number of acute strokes and TIAs admitted during the COVID-19 period. This drop affected especially elderly patients, and despite a delay in their arrival to the emergency department, the proportion of patients treated with recanalization therapies was preserved.Cerebrovasc Dis

Impact of prescription patterns of antithrombotic treatment on atrial fibrillation-related ischemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: The prescription of oral anticoagulants, particularly direct oral anticoagulants, has increased from 2013 to 2019 in our Health Assistance Area. This increase might partially explain the reduction in AF-related IS. PMID: 33326304 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Leukotriene receptor antagonists role in recuding the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular risk: A case-control study in southern Spain
Background and Aims: Leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRAs) are used in asthmatic patients, however different studies indicate that LTRAs can decrease intimal hyperplasia after vascular injury, and have a protective role in cerebral ischemia. The aim of our study was to assess the role of LTRAs in reducing myocardial infarction (MI) and ischemic stroke (IS) risk in patients from two Primary Health Care Centers of Granada.

Oral Anticoagulation and Risk of Symptomatic Hemorrhagic Transformation in Stroke Patients Treated With Mechanical Thrombectomy: Data From the Nordictus Registry
Conclusions: OAC with VKA, but not with DOACs, was an independent predictor of sICH after mechanical thrombectomy. This excess risk was associated neither with INR value by the time thrombectomy was performed, nor with a worse functional outcome or mortality at 3 months.

Fried-Food Consumption Does Not Increase the Risk of Stroke in the Spanish Cohort of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) Study
ConclusionsIn this Spanish cohort, whose participants mainly used olive oil or sunflower oil when frying, the consumption of fried food was not associated with an increased risk of incident stroke.

Cost-effectiveness of direct oral anticoagulants versus vitamin K antagonist in atrial fibrillation: A study protocol using Real-World Data from Catalonia (FantasTIC Study)
Discussion: We hope to provide relevant information about direct and indirect costs of oral anticoagulants, which, together with aspects of effectiveness and safety, could help shape the consensual decision-making of evaluating bodies.

Socioeconomic Factors Predicting Depression Differ in the Acute Stage and at 1 year After Ischemic Stroke or TIA
The most prevalent psychiatric complication after stroke is depression. Clinically relevant depressive symptoms appear in about one third of cases after stroke.1,2 The frequency of post stroke depression (PSD) is highest in the first year after stroke.3 In a recent Spanish survey of patients with TIA and minor stroke 43.9 % had post stroke depression (PSD) at 10 days after the cerebrovascular event and 8.6 % of patients had PSD 12 months later.4 Severity of depressive symptoms often changes in the first year after stroke.

IJERPH, Vol. 17, Pages 6014: Coping Strategies, Quality of Life, and Neurological Outcome in Patients Treated with Mechanical Thrombectomy after an Acute Ischemic Stroke
er-Soler New reperfusion therapies have improved the clinical recovery rates of acute ischemic stroke patients (AISP), but it is not known whether other factors, such as the ability to cope, might also have an effect. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of endovascular treatment (EVT) on coping strategies, quality of life, and neurological and functional outcomes in AISP at 3 months and 1 year post-stroke. A multicenter, prospective, longitudinal, and comparative study of a sub-study of the participants in the Endovascular Revascularization with Solitaire Device versus Best Medical Therapy in Anterior Cir...

Incidence and consequences of systemic arterial thrombotic events in COVID-19 patients
AbstractA high incidence of thrombotic events, particularly deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, has been clearly documented in COVID-19 patients. In addition, small series of patients with coronary, cerebrovascular and peripheral arterial thrombotic events have also been reported, but their true incidence and consequences are not well described, and constitute the objective of this study. From February 1st to April 21st, 2020, 2115 COVID-19 patients were treated at Hospital Universitario Fundaci ón Alcorcón (Madrid, Spain), and 1419 were eventually admitted. Patient characteristics and outcomes were collected by...

Prognostic importance of diagnosticated peripheral arterial disease through the ankle brachial index in spanish general population.
CONCLUSIONS: Low ABI is associated with a significant increase in the risk of stroke, ischemic heart disease, cardiovascular mortality and total mortality in our population. The inclusion of ABI improved the reclassification of people at intermediate risk, according to FRESCO cardiovascular, so its use in that risk category would be justified. Effect of obstructive sleep apnoea and its treatment with continuous positive airway pressure on the prevalence of cardiovascular events in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ISAACC study): a randomised controlled trial
This study is registered with Clinicaltrials.gov, NCT01335087 and is now closed.FindingsBetween April 25, 2011, and Feb 2, 2018, a total of 2834 patients with ACS had respiratory polygraphy, of whom 2551 (90·01%) were recruited. 1264 (49·55%) patients had OSA and were randomly assigned to the CPAP group (n=633) or the UC group (n=631). 1287 (50·45%) patients did not have OSA, of whom 603 (46·85%) were randomly assigned to the reference group. Patients were followed up for a median of 3·35 years (IQR 1·50–5·31). The prevalence of cardiovascular events was similar in the CPAP and UC groups (98 events [16%] vs 108 ev...

Reducing Hypertension in a Post-Stroke Black and Hispanic Homecare Population: Results of a Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial.
CONCLUSION: The significant across-the-board SBP decreases suggest that UHC nurse/patient/physician interactions were the central component of SBP reduction and that additional efforts to lower recurrent stroke risk should test incremental improvements in usual care, not resource-intensive transitional care interventions. They also suggest the potential value of pragmatic homecare programs as part of a broader strategy to overcome HTN treatment barriers and improve secondary stroke prevention globally.
