A Decade of Racial and Ethnic Stroke Disparity: An Insight from Nhanes (P03.151)
CONCLUSIONS: The greater prevalence of stroke in AA compared to NHW is better explained by variables that reflect the diagnosis and control of important vascular risk factors. These results identify targets for interventions to reduce this disparity.Disclosure: Dr. Gutierrez has nothing to disclose.

Impact of early statin therapy in patients with ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack
ConclusionsIn acute ischemic stroke, patients receiving late statin treatment carried a poorer clinical outcome than those with earlier statin initiation. Inhospital statin use after an acute ischemic stroke did not increase the risk of cerebral hemorrhage.

Nonapnea sleep disorders are associated with subsequent ischemic stroke risk: a nationwide, population-based, retrospective cohort study
Conclusions: Our nationwide, population-based, retrospective cohort study provides evidence that patients with NSD were at increased risk for developing ischemic stroke compared to patients without diagnosed sleep disorder, with men and the elderly being at greatest risk.

Time trends of aspirin and warfarin use on stroke and bleeding events in Chinese patients with new-onset atrial fibrillation.
Conclusion: Aspirin use increased amongst newly diagnosed Chinese AF patients with no relationship to the patient's stroke or bleeding risk. Warfarin use was very low. Given the healthcare burden of AF and its complications, our study has major implications for healthcare systems in non-Western countries, given the global burden of this common arrhythmia. Increased risk of ischemic stroke in patients with pneumoconiosis
Publication date: February 2015 Source:Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, Volume 22, Issue 2 Author(s): Yuan-Yang Cheng , Kuo-Hsuan Hsu , Yi-Huei Chen , Ching-Heng Lin Although past studies have confirmed that chronic dust exposure is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, the relationship between it and cerebrovascular disease is still unclear. We aimed to determine whether pneumoconiosis is related to increased incidence of ischemic stroke in the following 5 to 11years. We selected 1238 patients with pneumoconiosis from Taiwan’s National Health Insurance database as our study cohort. After matching for age, sex and...

CARES (Changing and Advancing Risk factor control through Educations after Stroke): A Pilot Trial of a Transitions in Care Post-discharge Telephone Intervention for Stroke Patients (S13.006)
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of study is to test the feasibility and effectiveness of a telephonic post-discharge intervention designed to improve access to care, reinforce self-management skills, improve health literacy, and screen for complications in a government-run safety net system. BACKGROUND: In the United States, risk factor control after stroke is poor, particularly among socio-economically disadvantaged populations with poor access to care. The immediate post-discharge period is a vulnerable time for stroke patients, given their risk of recurrent stroke, worsening symptoms, complications, and need for medication titra...

Racial and Ethnic Differences in Mental Distress among Stroke Survivors.
CONCLUSION: Serious mental distress is highly prevalent among US stroke survivors and is more common in Hispanics than NHWs, African Americans and Asians. Further study of the role of mental distress in ethnic differences in post-stroke disability is warranted. PMID: 26118139 [PubMed - in process]

Sitagliptin After Ischemic Stroke in Type 2 Diabetic Patients: A Nationwide Cohort Study
Abstract: The cerebrovascular safety and efficacy of sitagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor, in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) with ischemic stroke remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of sitagliptin in patients with T2DM with recent ischemic stroke. We analyzed data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database between March 1, 2009, and December 31, 2011. Ischemic stroke patients were identified from individuals with T2DM. Patients who received sitagliptin were compared with those who did not to evaluate the cardiovascular safety and efficacy...

Association between tooth loss and medical costs related to stroke in healthy older adults aged over 75 years in Japan
ConclusionWithin the limitations of the present study, the reported findings suggest an independent relationship of tooth loss with increase in medical cost related to stroke among older Japanese adults. Further studies are necessary to substantiate these findings. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2016; ●●: ●●–●●.

Association Between Kidney Stones and Risk of Stroke: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study
This study explored whether patients with renal stones were at a higher stroke risk than those without renal stones. A national insurance claim dataset of 22 million enrollees in Taiwan was used to identify 53,659 patients with renal stones, and 214,107 were selected as age-, sex-, and comorbidity-matched controls for a 13-year follow-up. The relative stroke risk for the RS cohort was 1.06-fold higher than that for the non-RS group (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.01–1.11). Age-specific analysis revealed that the adjusted stroke risk for the RS cohort increased as age decreased, with the highest risk of 1.47-fold (...

Risk of epilepsy in stroke patients receiving acupuncture treatment: a nationwide retrospective matched-cohort study
Conclusions Stroke patients who received acupuncture treatment had a reduced risk of epilepsy compared with those not receiving acupuncture treatment. However, the protective effects associated with acupuncture treatment require further validation in prospective cohort studies.

Different impact of aspirin on renal progression in patients with predialysis advanced chronic kidney disease with or without previous stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: There was no significant benefit in preventing ischemic stroke in the patients with advanced CKD who received aspirin therapy. Furthermore, the use of aspirin was associated with the risk of renal failure in the patients with advanced CKD without previous stroke. PMID: 27884500 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
