Processes and outcomes of ischemic stroke care: the influence of hospital level of care
Conclusions Outcomes among patients with ischemic stroke can be improved by thrombolytic therapy, antithrombotic therapy, statin treatment and rehabilitation assessment. Among patients with ischemic stroke, admission to designated stroke center hospitals may be associated with lower mortality through better processes of care.

How does age affect the care dependency risk one year after stroke? A study based on claims data from a German health insurance fund
Conclusions: Our results show that age has an effect on care dependency risk that cannot be explained by burden of disease. Thus, there must be other underlying age-dependent factors that account for the remaining age effects (e.g., social conditions). Further studies are needed to explore the causes of the strong age effects observed.

Association of Gallbladder Polyp and Stroke: A Nationwide, Population-Based Study
Abstract: Gallbladder polyp (GP) and stroke share several metabolic disorders as risk factors. We assessed the association between GP and subsequent stroke risk. From 2000 to 2011, patients with GP aged>20 years were identified from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000. Of the 15,975 examined patients, 12,780 and 3195 were categorized into the non-GP and GP cohorts, respectively. The relative risks of stroke were estimated using the Cox proportional hazard model after adjusting for age, sex, and comorbidities. The overall incidence of stroke was higher in the GP cohort than in the non-GP cohort (6.66 vs 5.20/100...

Increased Risk of Stroke in Patients With Fibromyalgia: A Population-BASED Cohort Study
Abstract: Neuropsychiatric diseases might enhance stroke development, possibly through inflammation and atherosclerosis. Approximately 25% to 40% of patients with stroke, largely younger patients, are not associated with any conventional stroke risk factors. In this research, we explored whether fibromyalgia (FM), a neuropsychosomatic disorder, increases stroke risk. From a claims dataset with one million enrollees sourced of the Taiwan National Health Insurance database, we selected 47,279 patients with FM and randomly selected 189,112 age- and sex-matched controls within a 3-year period from January 1, 2000 to December ...

Risk of stroke in first-ever acute urinary retention: A 10-year population-based study
Conclusion There was significant difference in the risk of stroke between patients with and without AUR. Preventive measures should be taken for patients with AUR, which may be associated with an increased risk of subsequent stroke. Large-scale population-based studies in other countries and regions are recommended.

Effect of statin use on clinical outcomes in ischemic stroke patients with atrial fibrillation
The objective of this study was to clarify whether statin therapy can influence the prognosis in recent ischemic stroke patients with atrial fibrillation. We identified ischemic stroke patients with atrial fibrillation between 2001 and 2011 from Taiwan National Health Insurance Database. Patients not treated with statins during the first 90 days after the index stroke were matched to patients treated with statins in the first 90 days in a 2:1 ratio on the basis of age, sex, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, heart failure, estimated National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, use of anticoagulant, an...

Does the Combination of Acute Hearing Loss and Vertigo Increase Stroke Risk? (S26.007)
Conclusions:The combination of SHL with vertigo appears to increase stroke risk over SHL alone. SHL in patients with vertigo is not necessarily a benign "peripheral" sign.Disclosure: Dr. Chang has nothing to disclose. Dr. Wang has nothing to disclose. Dr. Winnick has nothing to disclose. Previously undiagnosed risk factors and medication nonadherence are prevalent in young adults with first ‐ever stroke
ConclusionsPreviously undiagnosed hypertension and nonadherence to treatment of hypertension and diabetes were more prevalent in young adult patients with first‐ever stroke in Taiwan. Interventions targeting young people to promote early detection and adequate control of VRFs should be encouraged.

Severity assessment strategies based on administrative data using stroke as an example.
CONCLUSION: The studies identified use many variables mainly based on hospital information in order to describe disease severity. With the exception of coma, these proxies were neither validated nor did the authors provide more detailed grounds for their use. An identified score for stroke severity could not be applied on SHI data. To develop a comparable score requires a linkage of clinical and administrative data. Since routine data include information from all sectors of care, it should be explored whether these data (for example, the patients' care needs) are suitable to assess disease severity. For validation, separat...

Higher stroke incidence in the patients with pancreatic cancer: A nation-based cohort study in Taiwan
No study has investigated the role of pancreatic cancer in the stroke risk using population data. We used claims data obtained from a universal health insurance program of Taiwan to evaluate the stroke risk in pancreatic cancer patients. From the catastrophic disease registry of the insurance, we identified 7479 patients with pancreatic malignancy without stroke history from 2000 to 2009. The comparison cohort consisted of 29,916 individuals identified from 1 million insured people without cancer and stroke history, matching with the cancer cohort by propensity score. We followed each selected individual until stroke was ...

Development of an Algorithm for Stroke Prediction: A National Health Insurance Database Study in Korea
Conclusion: The model developed in the present study can be applied in the clinical setting to estimate the probability of stroke in a year and thus improve the stroke prevention strategies in high-risk patients. The approach used to develop the stroke prevention algorithm can be applied for developing similar models for the pre-diagnosis of other diseases.Eur Neurol 2018;79:214 –220
