Temporal Trends in Stroke Severity and Prior Antithrombotic Use Among Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients in Japan.
CONCLUSIONS: In this Japanese study, the mean age of ischemic stroke onset increased, while the initial neurological severity at presentation decreased, over a 12-year period. PMID: 27452200 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Two-Year Recurrence After First-Ever Stroke in a General Population of 1.4 Million Japanese Patients - The Shiga Stroke and Heart Attack Registry Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Two-year cumulative recurrence rate after first-ever stroke remained high, particularly among patients with ischemic stroke, in the present population-based registry study in a real-world setting in Japan. Further intensive secondary prevention strategies are required for these high-risk individuals. PMID: 32350232 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Greater Severity of Neurological Defects in Women Admitted With Atrial Fibrillation-Related Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Female sex was independently associated with the initial neurological severity among AF-related cardioembolic stroke patients. PMID: 26511462 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Incidence, Management and Short-Term Outcome of Stroke in a General Population of 1.4 Million Japanese - Shiga Stroke Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: Incidence rates of stroke by subtypes were clarified and the total number of new strokes in Japan was estimated. More than half of stroke patients die or become dependent after a stroke. This study re-emphasized the importance of public health measures in reducing the burden of stroke in Japan. PMID: 28579600 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Predictive Value of Cystatin C for Stroke Recurrence in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: In ischemic stroke patients with high hsCRP concentrations, higher CysC concentrations increased the risk of stroke recurrence and vascular events. This indicates that the predictive value of CysC on stroke recurrence may depend on the inflammation status of patients. PMID: 33208593 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Two-Year Survival After First-Ever Stroke in a General Population of 1.4 Million Japanese - Shiga Stroke Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: In the present population-based stroke registry with a real-world setting in Japan, 2-year cumulative mortality after first-ever stroke is still high (>30%), particularly for cardioembolic infarction, subarachnoid hemorrhage and intracerebral hemorrhage. PMID: 30058607 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Serum Albumin and Risks of Stroke and Its Subtypes - The Circulatory Risk in Communities Study (CIRCS).
CONCLUSIONS: Low serum albumin levels were associated with an increased risk of total stroke, ischemic stroke, ischemic stroke subtypes, and intracerebral hemorrhage. PMID: 33191391 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Insufficient Warfarin Therapy Is Associated With Higher Severity of Stroke Than No Anticoagulation in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and Acute Anterior-Circulation Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Insufficient VKA therapy on admission was associated with higher severity of stroke and higher prevalence of proximal artery occlusion in patients with AF and acute anterior-circulation stroke compared with no anticoagulant medication. PMID: 29269702 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Seasonal Variations in Neurological Severity and Outcomes of Ischemic Stroke - 5-Year Single-Center Observational Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Overall ischemic stroke showed a fairly even distribution among the 4 seasons. Cardioembolic stroke was more common in winter. Ischemic stroke patients had more moderate-to-severe initial neurological deficits in winter and spring. Poor clinical outcomes at 1 year were generally similar among the seasons. Ischemic stroke is not necessarily a winter-dominant disease. PMID: 29607895 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Impact of Physician Volume and Specialty on In-Hospital Mortality of Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke
CONCLUSIONS: An increased number of stroke care physicians was associated with reduced in-hospital mortality for all types of stroke. The volume threshold of board-certified physicians depends on the specialty and stroke type.PMID:34393151 | DOI:10.1253/circj.CJ-20-1214

Incidence of Ischemic Stroke in Japanese Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Not Receiving Anticoagulation Therapy.
Conclusions:A low incidence rate of ischemic stroke was observed in Japanese NVAF patients except for those with CHADS2 score ≥2. In this pooled analysis, history of ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack, advanced age, and hypertension were identified as independent risk factors for ischemic stroke. Two-Year Outcomes of Anticoagulation for Acute Ischemic Stroke With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation - SAMURAI-NVAF Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Stroke/TIA patients receiving DOACs for secondary prevention were younger and had lower stroke severity and risk indices than those receiving warfarin. Estimated cumulative incidences of stroke and systemic embolism within 2 years were similar between warfarin and DOACs users, but those of death and intracranial hemorrhage were significantly lower among DOAC users.
