Causes of Death in Elderly Patients With Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation - Results From the ANAFIE Registry
CONCLUSIONS: This subanalysis described the mortality according to causes of death of Japanese elderly NVAF patients in the DOAC era. Our results imply that a more holistic approach to comorbid conditions and stroke prevention are required in these patients.PMID:36653127 | DOI:10.1253/circj.CJ-22-0614

Relationship Between CHADS(2) Score and Efficacy of Antiarrhythmic Drug Therapy in Patients With Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation.
Conclusions: When using a rhythm control strategy, the CHADS(2) score is a useful scheme for predicting the outcome of AAD treatment of patients with paroxysmal AF. PMID: 23220771 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Epidemiology of arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death in Asia.
Abstract Cardiac arrhythmias are cardiac rhythm disorders that comprise an important epidemiological and public health problem. Cardiac arrhythmias are significantly associated with increased risks of cardiovascular complications and sudden death, consequently leading to decreased quality of life, disability, high mortality, and healthcare expense. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained arrhythmia, and has been further increasing with the aging of society. Although the prevalence is relatively lower in Asians than in Westerners, the prognostic impacts on stroke and mortality in Asians are comparable...

Epidemiology of Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Asian Countries.
Abstract The distribution and burden of 5 conventional risk factors (elevated blood pressure, high total cholesterol, diabetes, obesity/overweight and smoking) for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) were reviewed in 10 selected Asian countries, in addition to the United Kingdom and the United States. Over the past 3 decades, age-standardized systolic blood pressure was on the decline in high-income countries but on the rise in low- to middle-income countries. Similar patterns were observed for total cholesterol levels, although the absolute levels remained higher in high-income countries. A pronounced increase in the p...

Trends in the Incidence and Survival of Intracerebral Hemorrhage by its Location in a Japanese Community.
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the ICH incidence steeply declined from the 1960s to the 1970s in Japan as a result of the reduced influence of hypertension and alcohol intake, but that this decline has leveled off since then, probably because of the increased incidence of thalamic hemorrhage in the elderly in recent years. Late-Onset Right Ventricular Failure in Patients With Preoperative Small Left Ventricle After Implantation of Continuous Flow Left Ventricular Assist Device.
Conclusions: In the setting of preoperative small LVDd, CF LVAD may cause late-onset RVF by leftward shift of the interventricular septum. PMID: 24430596 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

High-Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin T Predicts Non-Cardiac Mortality in Heart Failure.
Conclusions: Hs-TnT is an independent predictor not only of cardiac mortality, but also of non-cardiac mortality in HF patients. PMID: 24451686 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Emerging Role of MicroRNAs in Cardiovascular Diseases.
Abstract Despite the recent progress in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, these are still a major source of morbidity and mortality worldwide. For this reason, a large research effort was directed to the identification of the underlying pathophysiological aspects of cardiovascular diseases. Nevertheless, many mechanisms still need to be more deeply investigated, limiting the development of efficient diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for a relevant number of patients. Recently, microRNAs (miRs) emerged as powerful regulators of biological processes, offering a further opportunity to better...

Impact of Renal Dysfunction on Clinical Outcome in Patients With Low Risk of Atrial Fibrillation.
Conclusions: Impaired renal function has an additive prognostic value for thromboembolic events and cardiovascular mortality in low-risk AF patients with CHA2DS2-VASc score 0-1. PMID: 24521763 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

First Clinical Trial of a Self-Expandable Transcatheter Heart Valve in Japan in Patients With Symptomatic Severe Aortic Stenosis.
Conclusions: This is the first study to evaluate a self-expandable TAV in a Japanese patient population. The data show successful achievement of the study's primary objective and demonstrate the functional and anatomical effectiveness of the MDT-2111 TAV system. Introduction of Point-of-Care Testing in Japanese Outpatient Clinics Is Associated With Improvement in Time in Therapeutic Range in Anticoagulant-Treated Patients.
Conclusions: The introduction of POC testing was associated with an improvement in TTR, mainly through a reduction in the time spent below the target INR. PMID: 24717234 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
