Impact of Elevated D-Dimer on Diagnosis of Acute Aortic Dissection With Isolated Neurological Symptoms in Ischemic Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: d-dimer might be a useful marker for the early diagnosis of AAD with isolated neurological symptoms in ischemic stroke patients. Whole-body contrast-enhanced computed tomography should be performed in ischemic stroke patients who have high d-dimer. PMID: 25993997 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Patent Foramen Ovale and Stroke.
Abstract A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is common and found in nearly 25% of healthy individuals. The majority of patients with PFO remain asymptomatic and they are not at increased risk for developing a stroke. The presence of PFO, however, has been found to be higher in patients with cryptogenic stroke, suggesting there may be a subset of patients with PFO who are indeed at risk for stroke. Paradoxical embolization of venous thrombi through the PFO, which then enter the arterial circulation, is hypothesized to account for this relationship. Although aerated-saline transesophageal echocardiography is the gold stand...

Incidence and Risk Factors of Stroke or Systemic Embolism in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and Heart Failure - The Fushimi AF Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: The effect of HF on the incidence of stroke/SE may depend on the stage or severity of HF in patients with AF. The incidence of stroke/SE was markedly increased in the 30 days after admission for HF, but compensated 'stable' HF did not appear to confer an independent risk. Propensity Score Matched Analysis of Mechanical vs. Bioprosthetic Valve Replacement in Patients With Previous Stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with previous stroke, bioprosthetic valves had a lower incidence of complications connected to major bleeding than did the mechanical valves. Survival and stroke recurrence rates, however, did not differ between the 2 groups. We recommend bioprosthetic valves for patients >60 years or who have a history of GI bleeding. N-Terminal Pro-B-Type Natriuretic Peptide Is Not a Significant Predictor of Stroke Incidence After 5 Years - The Ohasama Study.
CONCLUSIONS: NT-proBNP was significantly associated with an elevated stroke risk. Given, however, that the predictive power decreased with the number of years after NT-proBNP measurement, NT-proBNP should be re-evaluated periodically in Asian patients. Guideline-Adherent Treatment for Stroke and Death in Atrial Fibrillation Patients From UK and Japanese AF Registries.
CONCLUSIONS: Approximately half of the AF patients received optimal ATT according to guideline recommendations, which was associated with a lower risk of stroke. Furthermore, there was no interaction for the 2 populations and the influence of ATT adherence. PMID: 31694989 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Age-Period-Cohort Analysis of Type-Specific Stroke Morbidity and Mortality in China.
CONCLUSIONS: By using Age-Period-Cohort (APC) analysis, a disparity between HS and IS was identified. Different prevention and control strategies should be used depending on the subtypes of stroke. PMID: 32161200 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Investigations of Carotid Stenosis to Identify Vulnerable Atherosclerotic Plaque and Determine Individual Stroke Risk.
Abstract Selection of patients with atherosclerotic carotid stenosis for revascularization is mainly based on the degree of luminal narrowing of the carotid artery. However, identification of other features of plaque apart from the degree of stenosis could enable better selection for intervention if they are also associated with the occurrence of stroke. Before these risk factors can possibly play a role in treatment decisions, their prognostic value needs to be proven. The purpose of this narrative review is to summarize current knowledge regarding the risk factors for stroke in patients with carotid stenosis, ho...

CONCLUSIONS: Inappropriate anticoagulant use for stroke patients with NVAF did not decrease over time. An increase in reperfusion therapy was a strong factor in improved functional outcomes and mortality. PMID: 30158346 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
