Global Trend in Overweight and Obesity and Its Association With Cardiovascular Disease Incidence.
Abstract Although the global prevalence of both the overweight and obese is on the rise, there are variations among regions or countries, and sexes. Approximately half or more than half of the population are overweight/obese defined as body mass index ≥25 kg/m(2)in the Americas (61.1%), Europe (54.8%), and Eastern Mediterranean (46.0%) according to the World Health Organization, while a much lower prevalence is observed in Africa (26.9%), South-East Asia (13.7%), and the Western Pacific (25.4%). Females are more likely to be overweight/obese in the Eastern Mediterranean, Africa, South-East Asia and the majority ...

Efficacy and Safety of Non-Vitamin K Antagonist Oral Anticoagulants vs. Warfarin in Japanese Patients With Atrial Fibrillation.
Conclusions:NOAC are more efficacious than warfarin for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in Japanese patients with NVAF. The present findings offer clinicians a more comprehensive picture of NOAC as a therapeutic option to reduce the risk of stroke in Japanese NVAF patients. Efficacy and Safety of Dabigatran Etexilate vs. Warfarin in Asian RE-LY Patients According to Baseline Renal Function or CHADS2 Score.
CONCLUSIONS: Bleeding and stroke rates in Asian patients varied according to renal function and CHADS2score, but the relative benefits of DE over warfarin were preserved when analyzed by subcategories. PMID: 26248573 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effects of Regional Differences in Asia on Efficacy and Safety of Edoxaban Compared With Warfarin - Insights From the ENGAGE AF-TIMI 48 Trial.
CONCLUSIONS: HDE had a greater relative efficacy and safety in EA compared with Japan that was only partially explained by differences in baseline characteristics and TTR. PMID: 26460886 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Predicting Atrial Fibrillation and Its Complications.
Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common cardiac arrhythmia associated with an increased risk of stroke and other complications. Identifying individuals at higher risk of developing AF in the community is now possible using validated predictive models that take into account clinical variables and circulating biomarkers. These models have shown adequate performance in racially and ethnically diverse populations. Similarly, risk stratification schemes predict incidence of ischemic stroke in persons with AF, assisting clinicians and patients in decisions regarding oral anticoagulation use. Complementary schemes ...

Clinical Results, Adverse Events, and Change in End-Organ Function in Elderly Patients With HeartMateII Left Ventricular Assist Device - Japanese Multicenter Study.
CONCLUSIONS: There were significant differences in the stroke incidence and recovery of end-organ functions after LVAD implantation. This may have important implications for patient selection in future destination therapy in Japan, where quality of life is an important issue in LVAD support. Three-Year Clinical Outcomes Associated With Warfarin vs. Direct Oral Anticoagulant Use Among Japanese Patients With Atrial Fibrillation - Findings From the SAKURA AF Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: A high follow-up rate allowed us to obtain reliable data on the status of OAC use and therapeutic outcomes among AF patients in Japan. Warfarin and DOACs appear to yield equivalent 3-year stroke and all-cause mortality rates, but DOACs appear to reduce the risk of major bleeding. PMID: 30078823 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Percutaneous WATCHMAN Left Atrial Appendage Closure for Japanese Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation at Increased Risk of Thromboembolism - First Results From the SALUTE Trial.
CONCLUSIONS: The procedural safety and 6-month results from the SALUTE trial demonstrated that the LAA closure device was safe and effective, similar to the results of large-scale randomized clinical trials, and provides a novel perspective of LAA closure for Japanese patients with NVAF in need of an alternative to long-term oral-anticoagulation. Risk Profile and 1-Year Outcome of Newly Diagnosed Atrial Fibrillation in Japan - Insights From GARFIELD-AF.
CONCLUSIONS: GARFIELD-AF continues to provide important information on the homogeneity and heterogeneity of baseline characteristics and treatment patterns in patients with newly diagnosed NVAF. This diversity reflects the differences in outcomes in Japan compared with the rest of the world. PMID: 30518731 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Clinical Outcomes of Off-Label Dosing of Direct Oral Anticoagulant Therapy Among Japanese Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Identified From the SAKURA AF Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: Clinical outcomes were not worse for under-dose than for standard-dose users among patients with different backgrounds. Over-dose users, however, were at higher risk for all clinical events and required careful follow-up. Further studies are needed to clarify the safety and effectiveness of off-label DOAC dosing in Japan. PMID: 30726797 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Antithrombotic Therapy for Patients With Atrial Fibrillation and Bioprosthetic Valves - Real-World Data From the Multicenter, Prospective, Observational BPV-AF Registry
CONCLUSIONS: Approximately 30% of patients with AF and BPV replacement were treated with DOAC. The risks of major bleeding and stroke or systemic embolism were similar between warfarin- and DOAC-treated patients with AF who had BPV replacement. Treatment with DOACs could be an alternative to warfarin in this population.PMID:34719560 | DOI:10.1253/circj.CJ-21-0564
